'Oldest' Hajj pilgrim back home

By Narayan Bareth

BBC correspondent in Jaipur

Habib Miyan comes home to a reception of garlands

The man said to be the world's oldest pilgrim has returned home after a long cherished dream of performing the Hajj.

Habib Miyan is 125 years old, according to his pension papers, although he claims to be 132.

A resident of the Indian state of Rajasthan, his trip to Mecca was made possible by the generosity of readers of BBC News Online.

"Almighty Allah is great. I am so grateful to all those who helped me in performing my Hajj," he said soon after arriving late on Monday night.

Habib was greeted warmly by local residents in his hometown of Jaipur, where his story received wide publicity.

Relatives and friends thronged his residence with marigold garlands in their hands and congratulated him for completing a successful pilgrimage.

Filled with emotion

Many of them sought his blessings.

"In Mecca I prayed for all those who are ill, poor, needy or blind," he said.

Habib is looking forward to his next birthday

"I also prayed for those who extended their support in organising my trip especially the donor from the UK."

"How can I forget the kindness of such a person whom I can never meet," he said, filled with emotion.

Habib's Hajj pilgrimage was made possible by several anonymous donors who had read about him on BBC News Online and his inability to pay for his lifelong dream.

Among the anonymous donors was a taxi-driver from Rotherham in northern England who put up money he was saving for his own Hajj pilgrimage.

The main donation came from a businessman in London who forwarded 270,000 rupees ($5,700) to Habib's bank account.

Centre of attention

In Saudi Arabia the Indian embassy organised his transport and a doctor to monitor his health, Habib - who has now lost his sight - revealed.

Throughout his trip he was the centre of attraction among all the other Hajj pilgrims.

Treated as a special guest, Habib was showered with gifts and sweets by many Saudis.

Local magazines and newspapers covered his trip with great interest.

Habib is now looking forward to celebrating his birthday in May.

  women
Posted by: lordgilbert - 02-13-2004, 03:14 PM - Forum: Discussion of Beliefs - Replies (1)

I have a question about the need to make women cover up. In all the answers to this type of question that Ihave read on this forum and elsewhere, the reason given is that if they do not cover up men may be tempted and sin. This to me seems a particularly strange use of logic and its inconsisitency can easily be seen if applied in other areas of life. So...

if women must ocver up beacuse men may be tempted to sin then...

Shops should have no displays lest people be tempted to steal from them,

Houses should have no windows because one might be tempted by what is inside them and desire to steal from them

Small, frail men should cover up lest dominating women be tempted to take advantage of them.

Farmyard animals should wear the burkha lest lonely, despearate men become tempted to take advantage of them.

Now I realise that these sound silly, but they are, I think, an application of the same logic which forces women to cover up. So if you do not apply that logic to all areas of potential temptation why apply it to women only?

Asalam Alaykum Wa Rahmat Allah Wa Barakatu,

My fellow sisters and brothers I was wondering if anyone new of any verses in the Quran or hadith regarding parents hitting there children. Are we, as parents allowed to hit our children and if so, where on the body, and how hard? As I heard it is hararm to strike any human being on the face.

Jazak Allah,

Just a reminder to keep our hands raised, making much dua for our innocent sisters and brothers who are suffering in our muslim lands. May Allah not let them feel any pain, May he put comfort, eeman and strength in there hearts and may they be blessed with a justly reward in the akhira AMEEN!

  The resurrection
Posted by: wel_mel - 02-13-2004, 06:00 AM - Forum: Discussion of Beliefs - No Replies

The resurrection

Salm everyone.

I want to mention before discussing about the resurrection. That the holiday of Easter, the supposedly day of Jesus' resurrection was originally a pagan festival honoring Eostre, a Teutonic (Germanic) goddess of light and spring. At that time of the vernal equinox (the day in the spring when the sun crosses the equator and day and night are of equal length); sacrifices were offered in her honor. As early as the ENGLISH CENTURY, the name "Easter" was used to designate the annual celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

So where do Christians get the belief of the resurrection from? They got it from the teaching of Paul (Acts 17:18).Paul, who said he was an appointed apostle by Jesus according to his own vision. He never saw Jesus, declared Jesus as the son of God (Acts 9:20) and admitted that the resurrection was HIS gospel (II Timothy 2:8). So Christianity in its present belief that the Crucifixion/resurrection is necessary for the redemption of sin is not a teaching of Jesus, The sins of people were being forgiven before the alleged crucifixion or resurrection as shown in (Mark 2:5) And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven."

And (Luke 7:48) and he said unto her "Thy sins are forgiven"

Further, knowing that Jesus forgave sins before the crucifixion or resurrection contradicts the belief that the blood if Jesus as washing away sins, For according to

(Deuteronomy 24:16) The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: EVERY MAN SHALL BE PUT TO DEATH FOR HIS OWN SINS"

this belief of present day Christians is of Paul's. Paul justified his doctrine with use of (Romans 7:1-4): 1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

The above-mentioned verses clearly show that Paul made a distinction between Jesus and Christ. According to his reasoning, the law which had bound Jesus and his followers was no longer necessary since Jesus had died. Now they were no longer "married" to Jesus but to Christ, who had brought another law in a direct revelation to him(Paul). It was, therefore, necessary to follow Christ and not Jesus, teaching has gone astray. It was the use of this reasoning that Paul assembled his doctrine of redemption and atonement. Jesus never taught this theory. It was a great success, since, in so many words, it preached that a man could do what he waned and not face the inevitable consequences of his actions, provided that, at the end of the day he said : I believe in Christ" However, the basic premise on which Paul's reasoning was based is false, since Jesus was neither Crucified nor resurrected. His doctrines of redemption and atonement are fallacious.

Do you know that the doctrine of atonement was accepted by the Church three to four centuries after Jesus left the earth? Read Deuteronomy 24:16, Jeremiah 31:30 and Ezekiel 18:29 and you will find that this doctrine of atonement contradicts the Old testament/law

Deuteronomy 24:16 the fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

Jeremiah 31:30 30 but every one shall die for his own iniquity…

Ezekiel 18:29 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him

Now read Mathew 7:1 & 2 and 1Corinthians 3:8. there is no reason for atonement of "Original Sin" for Mathew 19:14 clearly states that children (Everybody at one time) belong to the kingdom of Heaven. This notion of "belonging to the kingdom of Heaven" in the line with the Islamic belief that:

"Every newborn child is born in complete submission to Allah (as a Muslim) but his parents change him/her into Judaism, Christianity, etc etc .

Further, Jesus states in Mark 11:25-26 and Luke 11:1-4 that trespasses (Sins) are forgiven by God. So, there is no reason for Jesus atonement for sins.

Mark 11:25-26 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Luke 11:1-4 1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

So, Jesus came not to destroy the law. It was Paul who abolished the [Mosaic] law. Read Acts 13:39 : 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

The "authority" that Paul amassed allowed him to claim that the blessings of the Gospel were not limited to the Jews, but to all who believed. This also is an absolute contradiction to the mission purpose and teaching of Jesus. Jesus' true message was the law. The same law that guided Adam, Abraham, Moses, Noah and all the other prophets, to include the prophet of Islam Muhammad, who prophesied in the Bible as mentioned in the

Qur'an:7-157

Those who follow the apostle, the unlettered prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures), in the law and the Gospel; for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); he releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. so it is those who believe in him, honor him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him, it is they who will prosper.

7. Etiquettes of Seeking Knowledge: There is a certain amount of etiquette

for seeking knowledge

To adorn oneself with beautiful etiquette, noble manners, good behavior and

pious conduct are

distinguishing characteristics of the people of Islaam, and knowledge - the

most precious pearl in the crown cannot be attained except by those who

adorn themselves with its etiquette and those who leave evil qualities

associated to it. For this reason the scholars devoted their

on this topic;

either pertaining to [general conduct] with all types of knowledge or to

specific types

of knowledge such as the etiquette of the carriers of the Noble Quran, the

etiquette of the

Assalaamu alaikum.

I write this to all of the brothers and sisters wasting their time with john doe and his ilk...

To try to impart knowledge is one thing but to continue to try to show people that are not really looking for the truth is another.

I believe this person is only trying to "bait" Muslims and NOT find the truth.

If the truth was being sought then so much time being spent on "extraneous" questions regarding things such as "does anybody know when the Qur'an was written down???" would not be needed.

The real questions should be.....

1. Do I believe in God/Allah?

2. Do I believe that Muhammad (pbuh) was his last messenger?

3. How do I behave to please Allah and try for the position in paradise.

Wasalaam.

A few years back, I came across a children’s book entitled Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss that left such an impact on me that I wrote an article about it. The book is available in the children’s section of most public libraries; however, for those of you who may not be so inspired as to actually look for it, I will briefly summarize it here.

Horton, the elephant, is convinced by a lazy, ungrateful bird by the name of Mayzie to sit on the egg she has recently laid in her nest so that she might take a break. She promises Horton that she’ll be right back, and although he initially thinks it quite ridiculous that as huge as he is, he could actually climb a tree to sit on a tiny egg, being the kind, considerate, helpful elephant that he is, he finally consents to helping her out — trusting that she’ll keep her word:

“Very well,” said the elephant, “since you insist... You want a vacation. Go fly off and take it. I’ll sit on your egg and I’ll try not to break it. I’ll stay and be faithful. I mean what I say.”

On the other hand, Mayzie has other things in mind...

“But, Mayzie, by this time, was far beyond reach. Enjoying the sunshine way off in Palm Beach, and having such fun, such a wonderful rest, decided she’d never go back to her nest.”

That night, Horton sits on the egg through a terrible thunderstorm. The summer passes by, autumn comes and goes, and soon it is winter:

“With its snow and sleet, icicles hung from Horton’s trunk and his feet… But Horton kept sitting, and said with a sneeze, I’ll stay on this egg and I won’t let it freeze. I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful one hundred per cent!”

When spring rolls around, all of Horton’s friends come to get him to play. Finding him still on the egg, they taunt and tease him, saying he thinks he’s a bird...

“They laugh and they laugh; then they all run away. And Horton was lonely… He wanted to play. But he sat on the egg and continued to say: “I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful one hundred percent.”

Then fate has it that three hunters sneak up on him, but Horton maintains his post — even in the face of their intimidating weapons. Thinking him quite odd, they decide to spare his life, but they cart him off to a traveling circus in a faraway land where he becomes quite a popular spectacle and brings in quite a sum of money for the circus owners.

One day, believe it or not, Horton and his egg that he has been faithfully guarding end up in Palm Beach and who, of all birds, passes by but Lazy Mayzie. Before Horton can admonish her, the egg that he’s been sitting on for 51 whole weeks starts to hatch. And Mayzie, being the lazy and ungrateful bird that she is, actually tries to reclaim the egg. But fate won’t have that and when the egg hatches, it has ears, a tail and a trunk just like Horton’s. It’s an elephant-bird. The audience cheers, and they send Horton and his new baby back to his faraway home.

How many lessons from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) can we find reinforced in this simple children’s story (incidentally, written by a non-Muslim author)? Most of us could learn a thing or two from Horton’s faithfulness, steadfastness, and sincerity.

First, Allah (swt) says in Al Qur’an, Suratul Kahf, (18:23-4): “And do not say of anything, ‘I will do that tomorrow,’ without adding, ‘If Allah wills.’ And remember your Lord when you forget, and say: ‘May Allah guide me and bring me the truth’.”

In today’s world, I often find the flipside of this injunction to be the case. How many times do we, without the least bit of sincerity in our hearts, answer, “Insha’Allah,” when we are asked to do something? Instead of being honest and straightforward, or making a genuine effort to honor our word.

When we are not sincere in answering, “Insha’Allah,” chances are that we will end up doing nothing — or perhaps quite the opposite of what we are asked to do.

So why is it that we respond with “Insha’Allah” over and over again — without sincerity in our hearts? Wouldn’t it be so much more honorable and pleasing to Allah to simply say that we are unable or unwilling to comply?

A Muslim’s word should be his bond. Truly, it is in Allah’s hands that anything happens and, truly, we should not commit to anything without uttering, “Insha’Allah.” But “Insha’Allah” should not be an easy way out of (and “Masha’ Allah,” the excuse for) what we don’t have the slightest intention to even try to do.

The Believer is faithful, reliable, and trustworthy, and honors his/her covenants. In Suratul Maida (5:1), Allah says, “O ye who believe! Fulfill your obligations and covenants.” Again, in Suratul Muminun (23:8), we find one of the characteristics of the Believers: “Those who faithfully observe their trusts and covenants.” And in Suratul Saff (61:2-3): “O Ye who believe! Why say that which ye do not? Grievously odious is it in the sight of Allah that ye say that which ye do not.”

We all should take a moment and reflect on how true we are to our word. If asked, would most of our acquaintances describe us as faithful, loyal, reliable and trustworthy?

Our practice of Islam has to be more than a mere profession with our lips. Our actions must be consistent with what we say we believe. If we indeed believe in Allah and have submitted ourselves as Muslims, how can we say one thing and do another?

Do we simply forget our promises, or do we somehow feel that it doesn’t really matter when we do not fulfill them? We should put ourselves in others’ shoes more often, and consider how we feel when people do not honor their commitments to us.

How do we feel when our spouses do not fulfill their responsibilities to us as laid out in our marriage contracts? How do we feel when our employers do not pay us on time, or at a lesser rate than agreed upon?

Are we not disappointed or even angry when someone does not repay a loan according to the terms we set? What about when someone does not show up or is very late for an appointment?

It is very important — in Allah’s eyesight and in relationship and community building — that we learn to honor our commitments. Because the first question in the matter really is, “Who do we choose to emulate, Horton or Lazy Mayzie?”
