  Are we blind?

Bismillahir-rahmanir-raheem

As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmat-Allaahi wa barakaatuhu (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allaah and His blessings) to all my brothers & sisters in Islaam.....

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast...sons/index.html

[b:89f605844f]Did I read that story right?[/b:89f605844f]

A six-hour operation at a residence on the northern edge of Mosul to get Uday and Qusay a bodyguard and a kid? Troops who were involved described the fighting as intense, with moments that seemed "like all hell had broken loose," according to CNN correspondent Nic Robertson.

[b:89f605844f]"like all hell had broken loose"? [/b:89f605844f].....What on earth are they talking about?

[b:89f605844f]A six hour shoot out with 400 troops, tanks, planes and missiles up against three men and a baby?[/b:89f605844f] Now just re-read those odds again slowly before continuing.

And what do the Americans say? [b:89f605844f]"The 101st kicks ass ,"[/b:89f605844f] she said. "The 101st has a proud history of military tradition, and this just adds to that tradition."

This is very remeniscent of the recent Iraqi War. For nearly three weeks the [b:89f605844f]U.S.U.K.[/b:89f605844f] forces couldn't even capture a chicken coop.....let alone a town.

How many hints do we need from Allah?

  Advice to New Muslims
Posted by: Amira2003 - 07-26-2003, 06:30 AM - Forum: Islam - Replies (1)

[b:fd6a4d9251]Advice to New Muslims[/b:fd6a4d9251][/size:fd6a4d9251]

[b:fd6a4d9251][i:fd6a4d9251]In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful [/i:fd6a4d9251][/b:fd6a4d9251]

[i:fd6a4d9251]Asalam Alaykum (Peace be with you), [/i:fd6a4d9251]

Congratulations! Alhamdulillah (Praise to Allah) who has guided you to Islam, the path to success in this life and the next.

So now you are a new Muslim with lots on your mind. Amidst the joy and excitement of embracing Islam you may also be feeling bewildered or confused regarding what to do next. You may have concerns about how your family or friends will react. No doubt there is lots to learn and obstacles to overcome, but with a sincere effort and a strong faith in Allah, everything will fall into place. Below you will find the most important advice we can offer you as a new Muslim. Don’t rush yourself, go at your own pace, and most of all remember we are here to help and support you every step of the way.

[b:fd6a4d9251]Importance of Prayer [/b:fd6a4d9251]

[“The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned after mentioning the testimony of faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory upon all the prophets and for all peoples. Allah has declared its obligatory status under majestic circumstances. For example, when Allah spoke directly to Moses, He said,[b:fd6a4d9251] "And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am Allah! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance."[/b:fd6a4d9251] [Taha 13-14]

Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during his ascension to heaven. Furthermore, when Allah praises the believers, such as in the beginning of surah al-Muminoon, one of the first descriptions He states is their adherence to the prayers.

The importance of prayer is demonstrated in the many of the Prophet’s statement. For example, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad." [Recorded by al-Tabarani. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol.1, p. 503.]

The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs in his life, the most important aspect is one’s relationship to Allah, that is, one’s faith (imaan), God-consciousness (taqwa), sincerity (ikhlas) and worship of Allah (`ibaadah). This relationship with Allah is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the prayer. Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound and proper, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself stated.

As for the Hereafter, Allah’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Allah has obligated five prayers. Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu` [Khushu` in the prayer is where the person’s heart is attuned to the prayer. This feeling in the heart is then reflected on the body. The person remains still and calm. His gaze is also lowered. Even his voice is affected by this feeling in the heart….] has a promise from Allah that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no promise from Allah. He may either forgive him or punish him." [Recorded by Malik, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’I and others. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol. 1, p. 616.] ]

The prayers are a type of purification for a human being. He turns and meets with his Lord five times a day. As alluded to above, this repeated standing in front of Allah should keep the person from performing sins during the day. Furthermore, it should also be a time of remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks Allah for forgiveness for those sins that he committed. In addition, the prayer in itself is a good deed that wipes away some of the evil deeds that he performed. These points can be noted in the following hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

"If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?" The people said, "No filth would remain on him whatsoever." The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, "That is like the five daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them." (Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

In another hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them." (Recorded by Muslim.)”] [1]

Okay so now you ask yourself…I know the prayer is so important, how do I learn how to pray? There are many sources on the internet which explain the purification and prayers, and that’s a good way to get an idea. But to really learn how to do it correctly you have to make the effort of finding a practicing Muslim to help you. A good place to do so is at the local mosque in your area…this is explained in more detail below.

[1] Extracts from “The Importance of Prayer” by Jamaal al-Din Zarabozo

[b:fd6a4d9251]Seek Knowledge[/b:fd6a4d9251]

Acquiring Islamic knowledge is vital to every Muslim. Clearly knowledge must precede action, since it is the bases by which one knows his/her obligations to Allah. Knowledge will enable you to practice your religious duties correctly, be aware of things which Allah made halal (permissible) and haram (forbidden), in that way you will conduct your life according to Allah’s guidance.

Several verses in the Quran reveal to us the importance of knowledge:

[b:fd6a4d9251]"Allah will raise up, to (suitable) ranks and (degrees), those of you who believe and who have been granted knowledge. And Allah is well-acquainted with all you do." [/b:fd6a4d9251][Al-Mujadilah 58:11]

[b:fd6a4d9251]"And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge." [/b:fd6a4d9251][Ta-Ha 20:114]

Also the prophet, peace be upon him, informed us of the reward for one who seeks knowledge.

Abu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "For him who embarks on the path of seeking knowledge, Allah will ease for him the way to paradise." (Related by Muslim)

So, know you may wonder what do I need to learn?

Well first of all you need to:

Have a good understanding of the basic Islamic beliefs (Aqeedah) such as knowledge of Allah, the Angels, the Prophets, and the Day of Judgment. Learn the purification and the five daily prayers correctly. Its important to learn how to recite Al Fatiha in Arabic for the prayers.

Learn about the permissible (Halal) and forbidden (Harm) things in Islam.

After that, you can continue in learning more about the other pillars of Islam such as Sawm(Fasting), Zakat, and Hajj (Pilgrimage). Also you should strive to learn the Seerah (life of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him), since his life is a role model for all Muslims. Another excellent goal which many converts aspire to is to learn the Arabic language to be able to read and understand the Quran in the language it was revealed by Allah(subhanahu wa ta'ala).

[b:fd6a4d9251]How can you do this?[/b:fd6a4d9251]

There are many resources available to learn. There is a multitude of Islamic books, articles, and tapes which address all these topics and can give you a good start, however to learn correctly you need to do so at the hands of a practicing Muslim as we mentioned earlier regarding the prayers. Just like you can’t expect to be a good sports player by simply reading a book or two about it, you can’t expect to learn the various branches of Islam all alone; you need to practice it with other Muslims. Naturally to do so, you should frequently visit the mosque in your area…. Which brings us to the next topic.

[b:fd6a4d9251]Importance of the Mosque (Masjid)[/b:fd6a4d9251]

The mosque plays a central role in Muslim society. Apart from being a place of prayers (the 5 daily prayers as well as the Friday prayer) the Mosque is a learning center. It’s a place where study circles and lectures are held for Muslims to learn more about Islam. Also a place were Muslims meet to study and recite the Quran, collect charity for the poor, and discuss issues concerning the community. It’s an ideal place for a new convert to meet Muslims and learn in a short time what would normally take weeks or months to learn alone. Naturally many new converts are shy or afraid to make their first visit to the mosque, but if they knew the joy which Muslims share when they meet a convert, such hesitation would disappear. Also, don’t worry about not doing everything perfectly from the start, no one expects a new Muslim to learn everything over night.

From Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said: "A man does not frequent the mosques for the Prayer and the remembrance of Allaah except that Allaah, the Most High, greets him joyfully, just as the family of one who is absent greet him with joy when he returns to them." [Reported by Ibn Abee Shaybah, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Khuzaimah and others and it is found in Saheehit-Targheeb (no. 315)]

So finally, we strongly encourage you to do your best to enrol in the study circles in your local mosque or fix a weekly schedule with the Imam to teach you all you need to know.

Staying In touch

It’s hard to explain the joy the whole team feels at Islamway upon hearing of a new convert like yourself, at the same time we feel a sadness when someone losses touch with us. We continue to wonder how the person is doing…how he/she is coping with family and friends, If he/she succeeded in finding a local mosque or not …etc. We hope that you will help us to help you, be keeping contact and letting us know your progress, concerns, questions…etc.

Finally, Islamway Team sends you their warmest congratulations on embracing Islam and wishes you all the success in this life and the next, as Allah tells us in the Quran,

[b:fd6a4d9251]"Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." [/b:fd6a4d9251][2:277]

  Angel of Death
Posted by: Amira2003 - 07-26-2003, 06:18 AM - Forum: Islam - Replies (2)

Salam alikom

Question:

Is there any evidence to show that the name of the Angel of Death is Azraa’eel?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is widely assumed that the name of the Angel of Death is Azraa’eel, but there is nothing in the Qur’aan or saheeh Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to indicate that this is his name. Rather this is narrated in some reports which may be from among the Israa’eeliyyaat (reports from Jewish sources).

Based on this, we cannot be certain whether this is his name or not. So we cannot affirm that the name of the Angel of Death is Azraa’eel, nor can we deny it. Rather we should refer this matter to Allaah and call him as Allaah calls him, the ‘Angel of Death”. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: The angel of death, who is set over you, will take your souls. Then you shall be brought to your Lord”

[al-Sajdah 32:11]

But the name of the Angel of Death is not given in the Qur’aan or in the saheeh ahaadeeth. His name is mentioned in some reports as Azraa’eel, but Allaah knows best.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: The angel of death, who is set over you, will take your souls. Then you shall be brought to your Lord”

[al-Sajdah 32:11]

Al-Sindi said: There is no marfoo’ hadeeth [one that can be traced back to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] which mentions his name.

Al-Manaawi said in Fayd al-Qadeer (3/32), after stating that the Angel of Death is known by the name ‘Azraa’eel: I have never seen anyreport giving his name as such.

Shaykh al-Albaani said in his comment on the words of al-Tahhaawi, “We believe in the Angel of Death who is appointed to take the souls of all creatures”:

This (“the Angel of Death”) is what he is called in the Qur’aan. With regard to the name ‘Azraa’eel which is widely known among the people, there is no basis for this, rather it comes from the Israa’eeliyyaat.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

“The Angel of Death” is well known by the name ‘Azraa’eel, but this is not correct, rather this was narrated from Jewish sources. So we should not believe in this name, and we should call the one who is appointed over death “the Angel of Death,” as Allaah called him in the verse (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: The angel of death, who is set over you, will take your souls. Then you shall be brought to your Lord”

[al-Sajdah 32:11]

Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 3/161

And Allaah knows best.

[b:5bbc80e741]Amid Allied jubilation, a child lies in agony, clothes soaked in blood [/b:5bbc80e741]

Friday, July 25, 2003

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/iraqcris.../warnews100.jsp

They lay in lines, the car salesman who'd just lost his eye but whose feet were still dribbling blood, the motorcyclist who was shot by American troops near the Rashid Hotel, the 50-year-old female civil servant, her long dark hair spread over the towel she was lying on, her face, breasts, thighs, arms and feet pock-marked with shrapnel from an American cluster bomb. For the civilians of Baghdad, this is the real, immoral face of war, the direct result of America's clever little "probing missions" into Baghdad.

It looks very neat on television, the American marines on the banks of the Tigris, the oh-so-funny visit to the presidential palace, the videotape of Saddam Hussein's golden loo. But the innocent are bleeding and screaming with pain to bring us our exciting television pictures and to provide Messrs Bush and Blair with their boastful talk of victory. I watched two-and-a-half-year-old Ali Najour lying in agony on the bed, his clothes soaked with blood, a tube through his nose, until a relative walked up to me.

"I want to talk to you," he shouted, his voice rising in fury. "Why do you British want to kill this little boy? Why do you even want to look at him? You did this – you did it!"

The young man seized my arm, shaking it violently. "Are you going to make his mother and father come back? Can you bring them back to life for him? Get out! Get out!" In the yard outside, where the ambulance drivers deposit the dead, a middle-aged Shia woman in black was thumping her fists against her breasts and shrieking at me. "Help me," she cried. "Help me. My son is a martyr and all I want is a banner to cover him. I want a flag, an Iraqi flag, to put over his body. Dear God, help me!"

It's becoming harder to visit these places of pain, grief and anger. The International Committee of the Red Cross yesterday reported civilian victims of America's three-day offensive against Baghdad arriving at the hospitals now by the hundred. Yesterday, the Kindi alone had taken 50 civilian wounded and three dead in the previous 24 hours. Most of the dead – the little boy's family, the family of six torn to pieces by an aerial bomb in front of Ali Abdulrazek, the car salesman, the next-door neighbours of Safa Karim – were simply buried within hours of their being torn to bits.

On television, it looks so clean. On Sunday evening, the BBC showed burning civilian cars, its reporter – "embedded" with US forces – saying that he saw some of their passengers lying dead beside them.

That was all. No pictures of the charred corpses, no close-ups of the shrivelled children. So perhaps I should warn those of what the BBC once called a nervous disposition to go no further. But if they want to know what America and Britain are doing to the innocent of Baghdad, they should read on.

I'll leave out the description of the flies that have been clustering round the wounds in the Kindi emergency rooms, of the blood caked on the sheets, the blood still dripping from the wounds of those I talked to yesterday. All were civilians. All wanted to know why they had to suffer. All – save for the incandescent youth who ordered me to leave the little boy's bed – talked gently and quietly about their pain. No Iraqi government bus took me to the Kindi hospital. No doctor knew I was coming.

Let's start with Mr Abdulrazek. He's the 40-year-old car salesman who was walking yesterday morning through a narrow street in the Shaab district of Baghdad – that's where the two American missiles killed at least 20 civilians more than a week ago – when he heard the jet engines of an aircraft. "I was going to see my family because the phone exchanges have been bombed and I wanted to make sure they were OK," he said. "There was a family, a husband and wife and kids, in front of me.

"Then I heard this terrible noise and there was a light and I knew something had happened to me. I went to try to help the family in front of me but they were all gone, in pieces. Then I realised I couldn't see properly." Over Mr Abdulrazek's left eye is a wad of thick bandages, tied to his face. His doctor, Osama al-Rahimi, tells me that "we did not operate on the eye, we have taken care of his other wounds". Then he leant towards my ear and said softy: "He has lost his eye. There was nothing we could do. It was taken out of his head by the shrapnel." Mr Abdulrazek smiles – of course, he does not know that he will be forever half-blind – and suddenly breaks into near-perfect English, a language he had learnt at high school in Baghdad. "Why did this happen to me?" he asks.

Yes, I know the lines. President Saddam would have killed more Iraqis than us if we hadn't invaded – not a very smart argument in the Kindi hospital – and that we're doing all this for them. Didn't Paul Wolfowitz, the US Deputy Defence Secretary, tell us all a few days ago that he was praying for the American troops and for the Iraqi people? Aren't we coming here to save them – let's not mention their oil – and isn't President Saddam a cruel and brutal man? But amid these people, such words are an obscenity.

Then there was Safa Karim. She is 11 and she is dying. An American bomb fragment struck her in the stomach and she is bleeding internally, writhing on the bed with a massive bandage on her stomach and a tube down her nose and – somehow most terrible of all – a series of four dirty scarves that tie each of her wrists and ankles to the bed. She moans and thrashes on the bed, fighting pain and imprisonment at the same time. A relative said she is too ill to understand her fate. "She has been given 10 bottles of drugs and she has vomited them all up," he said.

The man opens the palms of his hands, the way Arabs do when they want to express impotence. "What can we do?" they always say, but the man was silent. But I'm glad. How, after all, could I ever tell him that Safa Karim must die for 11 September, for George Bush's fantasies and Tony Blair's moral certainty and for Mr Wolfowitz's dreams of "liberation" and for the "democracy", which we are blasting our way through these people's lives to create?

Quote:US Ambassador to the UN Madeleine Albright on "60 Minutes" on 12 May 1996: Leslie Stahl: [b:5bbc80e741]"We have heard that a half million children have died[/b:5bbc80e741] (as a result of sanctions against Iraq). I mean, that is more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, [b:5bbc80e741]is the price worth it?"[/b:5bbc80e741] Madeleine Albright: [b:5bbc80e741]"I THINK THIS IS A VERY HARD CHOICE, BUT THE PRICE, WE THINK THE PRICE IS WORTH IT."

What's wrong with this quote?[/b:5bbc80e741] It only covers the first five years up to 1996. The U.S.U.K.U.N.O. sanctions went on killing for a further seven years to 2003![/quote:5bbc80e741]

Four Things a Muslim cannot resist
Posted by: AhmedSyed - 07-25-2003, 07:13 AM - Forum: Islam - Replies (6)

Assalmaulkum wa rahmatullahi wa barakathu

Somewhere back in the deepths of my brain, lies a memory of a Jumma prayer in the past when a speaker told the listeners at a local masjid about four things that a muslim can't resist. If u find these things [i:1f7604a0e0]easy[/i:1f7604a0e0] to resist, see ur local doctor  .

1.Watching the sky

2.Seeing the Ka'bah

3.Drinking water

4.Reading the Quran

1. WATCHING THE SKY- Brothers and Sisters, how many times have u gazed at the sky in wonder of its beauty? It seems as if Allah SWT makes the Earth and Heavens put on a show everyday. From your normal cumulo-nimbus cloud formations, to tornadoes. From a starry evening, to a meteor shower. It never ceases to amaze me. I myself go out everyday at night to watch the stars, and look for the ISS (International Space Station, if u look very closely at the sky at the right time, u can see it speeding across the sky; but remember it takes patience and a trained eye) 8)

2. SEEING THE KA'BAH- Ka'bah...it means cube.It is said that when you see it for the first time, you feel dazed and awe struck. I have seen many postcards, posters, and pictures of our most sacred masjid and i still can't talk my eyes off it for a moment. I have a question too for my dear brothers and sisters. How many times was the Ka'bah rebuilt since Ibrahim pbuh rebuilt it? And what were the dates that the Masjid Al-Haram and Ka'bah was rebuilt?

3. DRINKING WATER- Gatorade, Kool Aid, Powerade, whatever aid, they still can't match the purity and life giving elixer of water. Can u think of anything edible that is purer?

Water has a neutral pH, most of our body is water, and it has more then 1000 uses! We are told to drink between 6-8 glasses of this a day, so drink up brothers and sisters!

4.READING THE QURAN- Ah, yes. The Noble Quran, where would we be with out it? It guides our everyday life from the most simplist things to life changing events. It is there for a reason!! Just like Angel Gibraeel said "Recite!" to our Prophet pbuh. So much can be learned from this Great book. Science, philosopy, history, Allah SWT final message in its complete form!!

[b:1f7604a0e0]This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah;Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them And who believe in the Revelation sent to thee, and sent before thy time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2-4)[/b:1f7604a0e0]

Thank you for taking the time to read this, may Allah SWT Guide you all.

The Peace Treaties With The Jews According to Sari'ah

Bismillahir-rahmanir-raheem

As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmat-Allaahi wa barakaatuhu (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allaah and His blessings) to all my brothers & sisters in Islaam.....

[b:55d125cfe2]The Peace Treaties With The Jews According to Sari'ah[/b:55d125cfe2]

During the recent years the Muslim 'ummah have been afflicted with an immense catastrophe which could not have been imagined before its occurrence nor could anyone of the Muslim 'ummah think or suspect that such a thing would happen to them. It is the victory of the Jews, notwithstanding that they are a small group, over the Muslim 'ummah in four successive wars in which the Jews fought in one united front against the Muslims divided into divergent ranks. The Jews raised slogans that run counter to Islam, such as nationalism, patriotism, regionalism or mere defence of the land. The Arabs and the Muslims have been routed by their enemies, the Jews, in defeats which history does not know any instance of. Moreover, the Arab Muslims whom these defeats have affected concur about the indispensability of concluding peace and compromise with the Jews, saying that there is no alternative before them and offering the excuse that the Jews are helped by the Western nations and America while the Muslims have no power and authority in their favour.

And after having extended their hands for compromise with the Jews some of the Arabs have in fact concluded treaties with them calling these Peace Treaties. Since these treaties contain conditions that are invalid, more harmful and graver than defeats in the wars, and since people are asking about what should the Muslims' attitude be towards the Jews and towards the Peace Treaties that have been concluded, and because Allah Subhânahu wa Ta'âlâ has taken a covenant of those who are given knowledge to elucidate and not to conceal anything, I have liked to write briefly about the attitude which, according to sharî'ah, the members of the Islamic 'ummah should adopt towards these treaties they call Peace Treaties.

SETBACK FOR NOMINATION OF DANIEL PIPES
Posted by: Muslimah - 07-24-2003, 04:49 PM - Forum: Current Affairs - Replies (4)

In the Name of Allah: Most Gracious, Most Merciful!

MUSLIM AMERICAN SOCIETY (MAS)UPDATES

SETBACK FOR NOMINATION OF DANIEL PIPES TO U.S. INSTITUTE OF PEACE

Senators say Pipes is "wrong man" for the job

(Washington, DC - 7/23/2003)--The Muslim American Society's Freedom

Foundation (MAS Freedom) reacted with cautious optimism today as the Senate

Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee postponed a vote on the

nomination of Daniel Pipes to the U.S. Institute of Peace after members of

the committee showed strong objections to Islamaphobic and inflamitory

remarks and writings attributed to Pipes.

Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), the ranking Democrat on the committee, led

the charge against the Pipes nomination stating that the objectives of the

Institute of Peace would not be served well by Pipes. "Surely we can find

someone better to serve on the U.S. Institute of Peace," said Kennedy.

Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT) concurred with Kennedy's position on the

nomination, and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) gave his colleagues a detailed

history lesson on the disturbing views and activities of Daniel Pipes,

including his "Campus Watch" website, which targets academics whose views on

the Middle East Pipes disagrees with.

Karkin seemed particularly upset when discussing Pipes' hostile views

towards Muslim immigrants and the "threat" that Muslim pose by their

enfranchisement. "It is clear to me that Mr Pipes is highly

controversial...this is the last place where we need a lighting rod...I

don't know why we are considering this man for the Institute of Peace," said

Harkin.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) decided to postpone

the vote on the nomination due to the lack of a quorom-the minimum number of

senators needed in order to take a vote, and at the urging of committee

members who felt that not enough discussion had taken place about the

nomination.

Today's postponement comes off the heels of a National Call-In day

coordination between various Muslim, Arab, and other religous and civic

organizations whereby members of these organizations were urged to call the

senators on the committee and ask them to block the Pipes nomination.

MAS Freedom cautions that although the committee postponed the vote on Pipes

nomination, there still is a possibility that the committee will vote in

favor of Pipes and send the nomination to the full Senate for confirmation.

If a majority of senators present vote in favor of the nomination, then

Pipes will be officially confirmed as a member of the board of directors of

the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Therefore Muslim-Americans, and all other people of conscience, must

continue to lobby the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee to

vote down the nomination of Daniel Pipes.

Posted by: Muslimah - 07-23-2003, 12:19 PM - Forum: منتدى المقالات باللغة العربية - No Replies
