  Le mot "ALLAH"
Posted by: Ahlam - 03-05-2004, 01:08 PM - Forum: GENERAL - Replies (1)

  New Muslim
Posted by: clw366 - 03-05-2004, 02:29 AM - Forum: Islam - Replies (29)

Assalaam alaikum,

My name is Carol--I am not sure where to begin my story. I am a new muslim as of August 8, 2003, I was raised Catholic, went to catholic school and now I have found Islam. I have many questions, but i am still very new and afraid actually of practicing my faith. I am really looking for some friends who i can talk to about islam and learn and be ok with practicing my faith in islam. I am unmarried and have 2 children, and at the moment we live with my father who is a practicing Catholic, along with my sister. My family wants my children to be raised Catholic, but i have not persuaded them in any way in religion yet. I keep my islam faith a secret until i know more about it and feel secure enough to tell my family. That makes me scared, i am alone in my learning and i need some help with that. I would really appreciate any help and i will tell more of my story. Please excuse my haphazard post here, as my thoughts are not very collected right now. I hope to hear back soon. Any websites or books to read would be great.

  Challenges of a new Muslim
Posted by: Muslimah - 03-04-2004, 01:13 PM - Forum: Islam - Replies (1)

Challenges of a new Muslim

By: Natalie L. Komitsky

Whenever we, new Muslims meet one another we always have to ask, “How long have you been Muslim?” Are you married? If yes, “Where is your spouse from?” And “How has your family reacted to your conversion to Islam?” The answers to these questions help us understand and support each other in our common struggle.

Becoming a Muslim is not easy. There are so many things to learn, many lines to memories, Arabic terms to understand and a complete transformation of lifestyle. And if that was not enough, we often find ourselves confronted with rejection from our families, friends and sometimes even the Muslim community.

Family

“Your Lord has enjoined you to worship none but Him, and to show kindness to y our parents. If either or both of them attain old age in your dwelling, show them no sign of impatience, nor rebuke them but speak to them kind words. Treat them with humility and tenderness and say ‘Lord, be merciful to them. They nursed me when I was an infant. [17:23-25].

While Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, has blessed us by opening our hearts would like to see our conversion as a passing phase. When it does not pass some go to great lengths to challenge our eman. Many families, especially those who come from cultures where there is one dominant religion, see converting to Islam as a rejection of their entire ideology and heritage. This feeling is compounded if the convert chooses to change his or her name. They may react by threatening to disown their son or daughter, offering him or her an ultimatum to choose between renouncing Islam or being forced to leave the family. Some families also have preconceived ideas that Islam represents an archaic belief system, which condones violence and oppression of women. This obviously causes tremendous emotional pain for new Muslims, but somehow they find the strength to continue.

When they approach the subject of marriage, they sometimes experience a new level of resistance from the family. The family assumes that they will marry someone from a foreign country. They express their concerns that their prospective spouse is only looking for a road to gain citizenship, or may take their son or daughter to a far-away land where he or she will become a member of another culture and they will never hear from them again. Also in some case, families who have raised their sons or daughters as a Muslims, may not readily accept a convert as a suitable candidate for marriage. They may want to protect their cultural heritage or they may fear that the convert does not possess a solid foundation to be an optimum Muslim parent.

The good news is that most of the time, both parents in law and parents of converts eventually come to respect their sons’ and daughters’ choices. They see them living happily, with a new sense of peace and can see that this choice has also benefited them because Islam teaches us to maintain strong, respectful relations with our families. One predictor of the eventual result of the relation between a convert and his or her family would be the quality of their relationship prior to their convert had been estranged from the family, the relationship becomes better when he or she adopts an Islamic code of behavior. And, if this improvement is not enough to bring them around, and children will usually motivate even the most stubborn parent.

This positive movement in the relationship often draws the once resistant family to further explore Islam for themselves, insha Allah.

Muslim Community

According to Prophet’s, (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) example, these new members of the Ummah should feel welcomed into our larger family. Abu Mousa al- Ash’ari related that the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The bonds of brotherhood between two Muslims are like parts of a house, one part strengthens and holds the other”. He crossed the fingers of one hand between those of the other, to elucidate and illustrate the point. (Bukhari and Muslim). It seems that Muslim communities are overjoyed at the moment of shahadah, but sometimes fail to provide a sufficient support system in the weeks and months that follow. We need to recognize that we have an obligation to welcome new Muslims and be responsive to their needs. When living in a non-Muslim country, everything outside the Muslim Community framework is a reminder of what life used to be. If a new Muslim is under tremendous stress, they may be tempted to return to a ‘normal’ lifestyle if we do not go the extra mile to help them feel comfortable as part of the Ummah.

Muslim charities accusing U.S. of witch hunt for terrorist funds
Posted by: Muslimah - 03-04-2004, 12:07 PM - Forum: Current Affairs - No Replies

http://news.ibn.net/newsframe.asp?url=http.../news/12030.php

WASHINGTON - Muslim charities and organizations in the United States say they are the target of a government "witch hunt" since Sept. 11 which is intimidating donors and hampering their work.

Required by their faith to pay "zakat," or alms for the needy, Muslims say the ripple effects of the government's hunt for terrorist funds are hurting their community at its core and making them feel like suspects.

They say the official designation of three U.S. Muslim charities as suspected sponsors of terrorism, coupled with what they consider rising anti-Muslim discrimination since the 2001 attacks by Islamic militants, has put them in the firing line simply because of their religious affiliation.

Under constant surveillance

Charities also complain about high levels of secrecy surrounding the designations, and say excessive scrutiny and hefty costs to meet strict new U.S. regulations mean a smaller percentage of donations is now really reaching those in need.

"I feel like we are suspect, having done nothing wrong," said Laila al-Marayati, board member of charity KinderUSA. "People just assume that by definition if you're Muslim, you're going to have something to do with terrorism. . . . . We're under the assumption that we're under surveillance all the time."

"Guilt by association"

Dalia Hashad, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union advocacy group, said: "To say that the Muslim community, and certainly Muslim charities, are receiving extra scrutiny is not an exaggeration, and I don't think the word witch hunt is inappropriate to describe what the government is doing."

An inquiry by the Senate Finance Committee into the activities of 25 Muslim groups - including the three already frozen by officials - was the latest example of "guilt by association," Islamic groups say.

The committee asked the Internal Revenue Service in December for records including donor lists for the 25 groups "to conduct oversight on the issue of organizations, particularly tax-exempt organizations such as charities and foundations, which finance terrorism and perpetuate violence."

The IRS has not yet supplied the information, a committee spokeswoman said.

Some nongovernmental groups tracking Muslim charities said they were surprised by many of the names on the list that they said had not been linked to terrorism before, such as the Islamic Society of North America, one of the largest Muslim organizations in the country.

"What's really going on here is a very inappropriate fishing expedition," said Hussein Ibish, spokesman for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

"This political witch hunt is very disheartening and disappointing for us," said Jihad Smaili, a board member of KindHearts, one of the groups listed by the Senate committee.

The Treasury Department says the Sept. 11 attacks showed militant groups had infiltrated and abused charities.

"However, this has not resulted in a shutdown of all charities, but rather a focused attempt to target those that are financing or supporting terrorism," said Treasury spokeswoman Molly Millerwise.

The Treasury has so far designated more than 20 charities worldwide as part of the financial support network for al-Qaida, Hamas and other militant groups.

Re: Moses & Jesus (Peace be upon them)
Posted by: wel_mel - 03-03-2004, 12:48 PM - Forum: Discussion of Beliefs - No Replies

Assalamo Alikum,

just wanna share some sayings of the prophet Muhammad about Moses and Jesus may peace and blessing from Allah be upon them all.

179.“ On the authority of lbn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of 'Ashura. The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: What is the significance of this day that you observe fast? They said: It is the day of great significance when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and so we observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the Jews: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have, so Allah's Messenger (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) observed fast (on the day of 'Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed”. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Note 1: In Arabic they call the Prophet Moses (may peace be upon him) Moosa. The name Moosa (Moses) is a common name among Muslims, because Moses (may peace be upon him) is loved and very respected by Muslims.

Note 2: “ Observing fast” means to follow the fast, which is abstinence from eating and drinking.

Note 3: "Pharaoh" is the king of Egypt. The word "Pharaoh" is a dynastic title for the kings of Egypt.

Note 4: If you are interested in more detailed information about the Prophet Moses, (may peace be upon him), please refer to the following passages in the Holy Koran: (XX, 9-98), (Vll, 103-155), (XXVI, 10-69), and (XXVII, 3-48).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

180.“ On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of a All h be upon him) said: I am most akin to Jesus Christ among the whole of mankind, and all the Prophets are of different mothers, but belong to one religion. No Prophet was born between my time and Jesus”. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Note 1: In Arabic they call the Prophet Jesus (may peace be upon him) Eesa. The name Eesa (Jesus) is a common name among Muslims, because Jesus (may peace be upon him) is loved and very respected by Muslims.

Note 2: “ I am the most akin to Jesus” means " I am the closest one to Jesus".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

181.“ On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The son of Mary (may peace be upon him) will soon descend among you as a just judge. He will break crosses, kill swine and abolish Jizya (taxes). Wealth will pour forth to such an extent that no one will accept it or need it”. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Note 1: “ Will pour forth” means will be abundant.

Note 2: This Hadith is predicting the Second Coming of Jesus.

Note 3: We the Muslims do not believe in the crucifixion of Jesus.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

182.“ On the authority of Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The Dajjal (impostor) will appear in my Ummah (people) and he will stay (in the world) for forty (I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years). And Allah will then send Jesus, son of Mary, who will resemble 'Urwa bin Mas'ud. He (Jesus Christ) will chase him and kill him. People will then live for seven years peacefully, and there will be no hatred between any two people”. (Muslim).

Note 1: Urwa bin Mas'ud is one of the Holy Prophets Companions.

Note 2: This Hadith is predicting the Second Coming of Jesus (may peace be upon him).

Note 3: If you are interested in more detailed information about the Prophet Jesus, (may peace be upon him) please refer to the following passages in the Holy Koran: (XIX, 16-35), (III, 42-60), and (V, 110- 119).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

183.“ On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Every one is born to his true nature. It is his parents who make him a Jew or a Christian or a Magian (fire worshipper) quite as beasts produce their young with their limbs perfect. Do you see anything deficient in them?”. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Note 1: This Hadith also means that children usually follow the religion of their parents.

Note 2: “ Everyone is born to his true nature” means that everyone is born innocent, good, and kind-hearted. Also, everyone is born believing that there is only one God (Allah).

Note 3: To believe in only one God is to believe in Allah, as Muslims do. It is not the same as believing that God has a son, as Christians do; or believing, as the Jewish do, that they are the chosen people.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

184.“ On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: He who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, does not affirm his belief in what I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), shall be but one of the inmates of Hell-Fire”. (Muslim).

  Muslims and Weight Loss
Posted by: amma - 03-01-2004, 12:56 PM - Forum: General - Replies (1)

Muslims and Weight Loss

by Karima Burns (MH, ND)

An English proverb points out, "Some men walk through the forest yet see no firewood." As Muslims, we should be careful of falling into this proverbial truth.

Muslims often seek outside help to lose weight, although the Qur'an and Hadith provide guidance on many ways through which we can combat being overweight. They include periodic cleansings, eating simple and whole foods and herbs, avoiding excess, drinking plenty of water, praying and seeking guidance from Allah, seeking the help of others, and being persistent and patient.

Ramadan is a time for physical cleansing as well as spiritual cleansing. A prophetic tradition (Hadith) states, "Fast the month of Ramadan so to heal your bodies from disease." If we strive to eat only pure, simple and light foods during Ramadan, we can undergo a physical as well as a spiritual cleansing. Since there is such a strong scientifically proven correlation between our spiritual, mental and physical health, to purify all systems at the same time provides the ultimate and most powerful detoxification fast that we have available today.

To eat purely means to eat the whole, unprocessed and pure foods that Allah has provided us such as whole wheat breads, grains, beans, vegetables and fresh fruits. These are perfect foods and we do not need to improve them with colors, chemicals and preservatives. The Qur'an (5:4) says, "They ask thee what is lawful to them as food. Say, 'Lawful unto you are all things good and pure.'" And (50:7), "And the earth we have spread out, and we have set firm mountains on it, and have made every kind of beautiful growth to grow on it."

The Qur'an also says (7:31),"Eat and drink, but waste not by excess for God loves not the prodigals." Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized this in Hadith when he mentioned that, "The stomach is the home of disease, and abstinence the head of every remedy. So make this your custom." It is easy to eat in excess since foods once reserved for royalty are now readily available in every supermarket. However, there is a hidden cost to excess consumption that keeps them expensive. Livestock pay this hidden cost by being injected with hormones and chemicals to increase the production of meat, cheese, milk and cream. The earth pays an even higher price when we consider the amount of grain and water used to raise the excess number of cattle for meat consumption.

Eating breakfast is also an important part of weight loss as it speeds metabolism of the body. The Hadith say, "Eat your meal at dawn, for there is blessing in the meal at dawn," and, "There is blessing in three things: the early morning meal, bread and soup." Also, we must not ignore the benefits of the many herbs that Allah has provided us. Sahih Bukhari relates that, "For every malady Allah created, He also created its cure. Whoever acquires such knowledge shall benefit from it, and one who ignores it will forgo such benefit."

Another gift that Allah has given us in the battle against excess weight is water. The Qur'an says (15:45), "The righteous will be amid gardens and fountains of clear-flowing water," and (21:30), "We made water essential for all life." Muslims wanting to lose weight would benefit by drinking ten glasses of water a day, at least one half hour before and after meals.

As well as their spiritual benefits, the five prescribed daily prayers also provide physical toning benefits to the body. And patience is often the greatest test we face when we decide to lose weight. However, the Qur'an says (2:155), "Give glad tidings to those who exercise patience when struck with adversity and say, 'Indeed, we belong to God, and to Him is our return.' Such ones receive blessings and mercy from their Lord, and such are the guided ones."

Lastly, we cannot forget the power of prayer and support from others. The Qur'an says (26:80), "... And when I sicken, then He (Allah) heals me." Abu Hurairah relates, "Allah never inflicts a disease unless he makes a cure for it." Weight gain is often caused by excess, and the weakness of one or more organs of the body. A Hadith even says, "The origin of every disease is cold. So eat when you desire and refrain when you desire." Many people have lost weight simply by warming up their bodies with herbs and warm foods, and reducing heavier, colder foods and those that clog and chill the system.

"Oh, Lord! Advance me in knowledge..." The Qur'an says, and the Prophet has stated, that we should, "Seek knowledge, even in China." Along these lines, we can also obtain wisdom from people all around the world in the subject of weight loss. Utilizing the support of programs such as Weight Watchers or information provided in magazines can be beneficial - as long as we turn to the Qur'an as our ultimate inspiration
