New Muslim - clw366 - 03-05-2004 Assalaam alaikum, My name is Carol--I am not sure where to begin my story. I am a new muslim as of August 8, 2003, I was raised Catholic, went to catholic school and now I have found Islam. I have many questions, but i am still very new and afraid actually of practicing my faith. I am really looking for some friends who i can talk to about islam and learn and be ok with practicing my faith in islam. I am unmarried and have 2 children, and at the moment we live with my father who is a practicing Catholic, along with my sister. My family wants my children to be raised Catholic, but i have not persuaded them in any way in religion yet. I keep my islam faith a secret until i know more about it and feel secure enough to tell my family. That makes me scared, i am alone in my learning and i need some help with that. I would really appreciate any help and i will tell more of my story. Please excuse my haphazard post here, as my thoughts are not very collected right now. I hope to hear back soon. Any websites or books to read would be great. New Muslim - Ahlam - 03-05-2004 Assalamu 'alaikum brother, Welcome to Islam and welcome among us . We are so pleased you join this great website. New Muslim - SisterJennifer - 03-06-2004 Asalaamu alikum Carol, I'm very happy to see you here. If you let me know which topics you are looking for as far as books go, I can recommend some to you insha Allah. One of the most all-around comprehensive books on Islamic belief and principals is called <b>"What Islam is all About"</b> the author is Yayhia Emerick. I feel like I push this book a lot, but I work in an Islamic school and many books have been reviewed, but this was found to be the most well written, and easily explained. It is available through www.soundvision.com or if you have access to any Islamic bookstore, it should be quite easy to find. A great book for women (and even men to read) Is called <b>"Islam the Choice of Thinking Women." </b> this one can be found at www.online islamicstore.com Welcome to the forums! New Muslim - clw366 - 03-06-2004 Asslaam alaikum thank you all for making me feel welcome here. I appreciate all the help you are giving me. I do have a bit of knowledge of islam already, i do need some moral support for dealing with my family when i tell them about my faith. As i do not have enough knowledge to defend islam against christianity, which i know i will have to do for my family. Dan, you said that you were Catholic, how did you deal with this issue, or didn't you have to? Any support of help would be great. Any questions are most welcomed New Muslim - Dan - 03-09-2004 Bismillah As salam alaikum, ukhti Carol. I am a stubborn man. I got it from my parents. This is the reason why they pretty much knew that they could not change my mind about Islam. After I was confirmed at age fourteen, I asked my mother a couple of questions. "Mom, does this now mean that I am an adult in the eyes of the church?" "Yes." "So any sin that I earn is my sin alone to bear?" "Yes." "I am not going to church anymore." "You're grounded." Each weekend she would ground me for not going to church. It got to the point where I would tell her ahead of time that I was not going to church that Sunday so she could pre-ground me for that weekend. I stuck by my beliefs though and eventually she gave up trying. Stick to what you know to be the Truth and they will eventually give up trying to change you. It will be a battle. I am not saying that it won't but Allah is on your side and there is nothing you can't do with Him Guiding you. When I converted, Shaytan would whisper for me to keep my religion secret or not to pray where nonmuslims could see me. The reason for this is because he knows how powerful Islam is. He knows that by your example others may be brought to the Light of Islam. At the very least my family members (all christian, mostly catholic), have a new attitude about Islam. They disregard some of the horrible generalizations that are made because they know me and can see the character that I exude. The longer you hide your beautiful belief, the more shaytan wins. You have nothing to be ashamed of or to worry about. You have made the best choice that you will ever make. I NEVER EVER regret becoming a muslim even after going through some of the trials of life. All that I endure for the sake of Allah will be rewarded when it really matters. Life is truly but a dream. When you wake up in the afterlife, you will be so greatly thankful that you decided to be a beacon of Truth for others. If there is anything, that you want to ask me about please feel free. I have been through alot, as we all have, so the more specific the question the better details I can supply. I am thankful to Allah for bringing you to Islam. Alhamdulillah. Astaghfirullah for anything that I have said that is wrong or brings others further from the Truth. Alhamdulillah if I have said anything that brings anyone closer to Allah. It is all due to His Perfection, Mercy, and Blessings.
