I'd ventue to say that no one should see this movie if they are going for a religious experience. A brother I love saw this movie and told me about it in great detail. His intension was to see the movie in order to be able to dialogue with Christians about it.
From what I hear, the movie does not include the message that Jesus brought, not the Islamic one or the Christian version. What it does show is the extreme acts that were done to this man in the several hours before getting crucified. It really plays up the emotional aspect of the religion versus the rational and logical. One identifies with the tradgedy and so feels attached to the character. I have heard that some people become "born again" (reinvigored in their faith in christianity after not practicing it for some time or ever) after seeing this movie. My brother pointed out something to a guy who was interviewing him for a paper about his perspective on the movie. The brother said that we will be questioned by God when being judged as to why we believed a certain way. He said, "Can you imagine telling God that you believed in Christianity because of the way that Mel Gibson's movie affected you?"
This makes me sad to see that a Hollywood movie with special effects is the reason people are feeling such religious emotions whereas the religion was there all along. Is this what humanity has become? Reduced to believing only as our emotions dictate us to believe?
I would feel the same way if a movie was made about Islam that did something similar. If the message of Islam was left out but only the hardships of Rasul-Ullah or the campanions were focused on, I would criticize muslims if they claimed that this movie increased their faith in Islam. Or if people claimed that it brought them to Islam. In fact, I would be flat out disgusted with that type of reaction because the deen of Islam has so much to offer and is so very deep. It is above such shallow interpretations and sentiments.
Allah Forgive me if I have spoken anything wrong. Astaghfirullah

Assalamualaikum everyone
I watced the movie a few days ago (astagfirullah Allah please forgive me if i did something wrong). I watched the movie with the same intention as wel_mel. I think what Dan is saying is correct i.e that the movie doesnt have to do anything with Jesus's (pbuh) life or his teachings.But according to Mel Gibson he actually wants the people to know what Jesus (pbuh) did for the humanity and then follow him according to christians .I suppose his message has been given in a good way because many of my christian friends told me that all that was there in the movie is in the bible.
I want to know what do we muslims think about Jesus's crucification. Are we supposed to believe in it .If not how did Jesus(pbuh) went from this world.

Assalamo ALikum brother Addil.

its very clear in the Qur'an brother that God raised Jesus to him and saved him from death.
pls check out the verses from the Holy Qur'an:
(3:55) Behold God said: O Jesus I will take thee and raise thee to myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the day of resurrection: then shall ye all return unto me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute.
(4:157)That they said (in boast), we killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the apostle of God; but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:
(4:158)Nay, God raised him up unto himself; and God is exalted in power, wise;
(4:159)And there is no one of the people of the book but must believe in him before his death; and on the day of judgment he will be a witness against them;
i hope this cleared the confusion Inshaa Allah brother

Asslaam Alaikum
I just got back from seeing this movie, and to be honest, it didn't phase me, i saw it as a movie and that was all. I know wel-mel was looking for input into this. I am a new muslim and i sat in the theatre and listened to many people sobbing over this movie. And when it was over everyone just filed out silently. Some discussion, but not much, just more silence. It was a very intense movie as to the graphic content, but i really was not affected by it. But that is my opinion, and may Allah forgive me if i was wrong to go and view this movie....ustaghfurullah

I've only seen a few short scenes from the movie on the news ... Just seen those very short scenes made me sick .
Just the idea of a kafir protraying Isa (Jesus) alayhi assalam, turns my stomach, although he did not protray what Isaa alayhi assalam did, but just the idea of him pretending to be Isa alayhi assalam.
I don't think any Muslim should go and see it, we are just helping Gibson get more money, and helping him in his missionary work.
And as the brothers said, you are not going to benefit from seeing it in ur dawah, by seeing the movie you might be doing the opposite, help Christian missionaries in their work, plus it might effect some Muslims negatively.

Fantastic film.
Great imagery, great cinematography, and I think that some of you are missing the point of the film.
It wasn't a movie about Christ's teachings, and you all should have been aware of that on going in (I'm not sure how you weren't.) There are plenty of films on his teachings if you wish to see that
This movie was about Christ's suffering, and what he endured for the rest of us. Just as in the movie, and bible, when he came as the messiah, people called him a farce and, as we know, killed him. It took such an overt, horrendous act to make believers out of humans (who are normally very skeptical as we all know).
As for the violence in the movie. I have said it once, and will say it again. It is one thing to say "yeah, jesus was crucified". But that is an easy thing to just pass off. It's quite another to see it reenacted in it's full technicolor glory (and as some have said on here, it worked it's point. If you think you were offended watching, imagine how horrendous it was to endure). I liken this all to the mindset of people who support war, without enduring it. It's one thing to say "yes, let's kill that xxxxx". It's another to see it, or go through it.
If you want films about christ's teachings, life, etc. May I suggest that you look at "The Last temptation of christ", or "Abraham". Both great films

kafir? why is he a kafir?
How did he not portray what Jesus did?
How will if effect some muslims negatively (anymore than any other group of people)?
You are right - by going to see it, you are helping spread the message of christianity. I know that scares and upsets you, but I'll agree with you on that
