Background


Da’wah is an obligation on every Muslim man and woman. Yet with 2 million Muslims in the UK , why are there so many misconceptions and so much ignorance of Islam? The answer is that we, as Muslims, are not doing our duty effectively.


This course has been designed to deal with the three most common problems that stop someone doing da’wah effectively – lack of knowledge, lack of confidence and lack of skills necessary to communicate the message of Islam “with wisdom & beautiful preaching.â€�

<b>Teacher: </b>Ustaadh Khalid Fikri has studied in the Institute of Islamic Studies and Research in Egypt under many known respected Shuyukh for over 15 years. He specialises in the field of Daw'ah and Hadeeth. He was also an Imam in the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Kuwait. The Shaykh is currently a Khateeb in four of London's main masjids and is a teacher at the Tayyibun Institute.

I remember once years ago listening to an Imam talk about proper use of Quran and was talking about we DO NOT write it in or underline things etc.... Now I am trying to find a ruling about this or anything from the scholars discussing this and I am having a hard time finding it. I need it for a brand new Muslim who wants to do that but I feel this is defacing the Quran. Do any of you know anything about this topic????

Few years ago, a group of people emerged claiming that Islam commands for the mistreatment of people of the scripture. They backed their claim by bringing up sayings of the Messenger blessing and peace be upon him ordering Muslims to clamp on and narrow the road in their way, refrain from initiating greeting (saying salam), and not even return back the salam. Even a number of well educated Muslims believe as such. However, this claim is totally negated in Quran as well as Sunnah, Ahadeeth of the Messenger blessing and peace be upon him as well as the companions.


According to Quran:


1. "Made lawful to you this day are the good foods. The food of the People of the Scripture is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them. (Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture before your time, when you have given their due bridal money, desiring chastity, not committing illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends. And whosoever denies faith, then fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers." (Quran 5:5)


By virtue of the above noble Ayah, making the food of people of the scripture lawful implies conducting trade transactions, accepting their food invitation, and offering food invitation. Based on the same rule, Islam allows marriage between Muslim men and women from people of the scripture. Not only this, but also secured her equal conditions as those set for marriage with Muslim women. Those conditions include that they must be chaste, receive Mahr (dowry), the man must intend for continual marriage, and not committing illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends. It is a known fact that marriage is deemed the highest form of social relations, having said that, how would Islam allow inter-faith marriages (between a Muslim man and women of scripture) then command for the humiliation of the woman's family?


2. "And argue not with the People of the Scripture, unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner, inviting them to Islamic Monotheism with His Verses), except with such of them as do wrong, and say (to them): "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you; our Ilah (God) and your Ilah (God) is One (i.e. Allah), and to Him we have submitted (as Muslims)." (Quran 29:46)


The way that is best is interpreted as the highest levels of goodness and kindness according to the Arabic language. The levels of goodness include Hassan= good, ahsan=better and al ahsasan=best and then comes the one that is best=allati hya ahassan that translates as the highest degree. When Allah Sets an exception saying "except those among them who do wrong", this either means those who exceeded the limits of manner during a dialogue such as insulted the Messenger of Islam or Islam using an inappropriate form of speech. Or it could be taken also as the category that fights Islam and Muslims. This makes it clear that each group is assigned for what they deserve in terms of type of treatment. This command, coming from Allah, to argue with the people of scripture using the best is contrary to setting a rule of mistreating them even if they were peaceful and not in war with Muslims.


3. " Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly (tabruhum wa tuqsetou) with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.* It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the wrong-doers." (Quran 60:8-9)


Originally, Islam is a religion of peace, a love oriented jurisprudence, a system targeting to cover and establish its methodology universally. Islam aims to gather people under its banner as loving brothers and sisters who are known to each other. Nothing would obstruct the achievement of this aim unless in case of aggression launched against Islam and Muslims. In case people of the scripture maintained a peaceful attitude towards Muslims, Islam is no need to express hostility. Even in case of disputes, the door remains open to restore cordial feelings, how? through embracing proper behaviour and equal treatment hoping that rivals of Islam-one day-will see all the good in joining the fold of Islam and live under its banner (Tafseer Sheikh Sharawy).


"Perhaps Allah will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as enemies. And Allah has power (over all things), and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Quran 60:7)


Islam never despairs that one day souls will turn towards the right direction as a result to this straight trend. Actually, we have many experiences in stories of people who reverted to Islam as a result to kind treatment, that stand as evidence to this.


The international Islamic legislation (Shari`a) establishes the peaceful status with other people collectively as the fixed and original status. It only changes in response to a military attack that consequently creates a necessity of deterrence, a concern of a potential breaching of a treaty, using force to suppress freedom of practicing Dawa (call to Islam), or freedom of faith. Except for the previously mentioned situations that create a need for using force, the normal conditions are peace, cordial treatment, Bir, and justice for all.


"It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the wrong-doers." (Quran 60:9)


"If you (O Muhammad) fear treachery from any people throw back (their covenant) to them (so as to be) on equal terms (that there will be no more covenant between you and them). Certainly Allah likes not the treacherous." (Quran 8:58)


Those two noble Ayahs establish the rules of treating non Muslims in cases of fight, aggression, betrayal..etc as explained in the above text.


To further explain, the underlined part shows how the Muslim nation will act in cases of breaching treaties. In such situations, Muslims must mutually break the treaty in order to be on equal terms. However, a notification to the other party must be made lest they accuse the Muslim party of deception.

When Umm Salim got married with Aba Talha Al Ansari and she was granted with a beloved son, his father loved him so much. The child became ill and died while his father was in his work. When the father returned home, he asked his wife about the son. She replied: he is in his quietest modes. She prepared dinner, wore perfume and dressed up in her best garments. Her husband took her to bed and had an intimate relation with her. By the end of the night, she told him: Aba Talha, do you see if some people lent other people a loan, a trust and a deposit, then came to ask them for it, would those people refuse to give it back? He said no. She continued: Allah may He be Glorified lent you your son as a load, and then took him back to Him, account this with Allah and be patient..


He said Inna lilahi wa inna elayhee rajeoun (to Allah we are and to Allah we shall return) . Next morning, he went to the Messenger of Allah sallah Allah a`lyhee wa sallam and told him. He said, may Allah bless your past night. She became pregnant, the newly born was brought to the Prophet sallah Allah a`lyhee wa sallam. The Prophet took some dates, chew them, and he took the ground dates with his finger and place it into the infant's mouth and the infant would taste. She said: O Messenger of Allah, give him a name, he name him Abdullah. There no better young man in Medina than him. His off spring were all of the Mujahedeen who performed Jihad in the name of Allah on foot not riding. Abdullah martyred in Persia. In another narration. Abu Talha was granted ten sons who all memorized the Quran. (reported by Bukhari and Muslim)

Narrated under the authority of Baraa Bin A`zab that he said: we went out with Rasullah salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam to attend a funeral of an Ansari man. We ended up at the grave and the man was not yet buried in the Lahd (Islamic grave). Rasullah salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam sat down and we all took our places around him, all in a very quite and still position just as if birds are standing over our heads and we are concerned to retain them. In his hand, he had a stick and was digging into earth. He raised his head up and said two or three times, seek refuge to Allah from the torments of grave. He continued, in case the position of the believing devotee who is about to leave this world and closer to the Day After, angles would descend to him from sky, having white faces, their faces is similar to sun, carrying a shroud from the shrouds of Jannah, and Hunut (Ziziphus mixed with Camphor) from the Hunut of Jannah and they take their sitting position on a close distance from him. Then the angle of death peace be upon him comes and sits next to his head and say: O you good Nafs (soul) come out to forgiveness and satisfaction of Allah. Rasullah said, it comes out flowing just like drop would flow out of a drinking container. The angle takes it, and as soon as he takes it, they do not let it in his hand for a glimpse of an eye, but they rather take it and place it into this shroud and Hunut. Very pleasant scent like the best of fragrances of Musk available on earth would radiate from it. He continued they ascend with it and they will not pass by any, (he meant by a group of angles), unless this group would say, what is this good soul, the carrying group answer xyz the son of xyz calling him with the best of his names used in Dunia until they end up to the lowest sky. They would request it to be opened, it opens up to them, and all the dwellers of each sky would send him away to the next sky till he ends up to the seventh. Allah may He be Glorified says write down the record of my devotee in Illiyyun (supremacy) and take him back to earth, of it I Created you and to it I return you and from it I take you again. Rasullah said, his soul is returned into his body. Two angels would come and place him in a sitting position and ask him, who is your Rub (Lord), he would reply my Rub is Allah, they ask what is your Deen, he would say my Deen is Al Islam, they ask him who is this man who was sent to you, he would say he is Rasullah salla Allah a`lhyee was sallam, they ask, what is your knowledge, he would say, I read the book of Allah, and had faith with it and believed. A caller from sky would call, my devotee spoke the truth, make for him a carpet from Jannah, prepare for him a garment from Jannah, and for him open a gate to Jannah. He continued he receives from its kind breeze and fragrance and his grave will expand to the distance of where his sight may end. He said and to him shall come a good looking man, well dressed and of good smell saying I give you glad tiding with what pleases you, this is your day the one that you have been promised. The man would say, who are you as your face is one that brings goodness, he replies I am your good deed, so he say O Rubi Command for establishing the Hour so that I would not return back to my family and money. He said and the kafir servant when about to leave this Dunia and come closer to the hereafter, black faced angles would descend for him from sky with covers from Juhannum, they sit next him on a distance of where his sight ends. Then the angle of death would come and sit next to his head, and say O evil soul come out to Allah's displeasure and anger. He said the soul then spreads around his body, he pulls it off like pulling throne from wet wool (veins and nerves are broken during the pull) and he takes it. But the angles would not let it be in his hand for a glimpse, they take it and place it in those covers (musuh), the worst odor might be on earth similar to the odor of rotten bodies comes out. They ascend in the company of the soul, and they never pass by a group of angles unless they ask who is this evil soul, they reply xyz son of xyz calling him with the worst names he used to be called with in Dunia, until he ends up to the lowest sky, they request for opening, but he is denied. At this point Rasullah salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam recited: "for them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle (which is impossible) ".


Allah may He be Glorified Say write down his record in Sijjeen in the lowest land, and his soul is harshly thrown down. Then he recited: ‏ "and whoever assigns partners to Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place."


His soul is inserted back to his body, and two angles would come and place him in a sitting position. They ask him who is your Rub, he would say huh, huh, I do not know, they ask him what is your Deen, he replies huh, huh, I do not know, they say who is this man who was sent to you, he replies huh, huh, I do not know. A caller from sky would call saying, he lied, carpet his place for him from hell fire and open to him a gate from hell so that he receives from its heat and harmful wind, and tighten his grave till his bones are crushed. A terrible looking man comes to him badly dressed, and sending terrible odor telling him I bring to you of the news that would upset you, this is your day that you were promised, the dead person asks who are you, your face is one that brings bad news and evil, he replies I am your bad deed, so he says O Rubi do not establish the hour.
