Asalaamu alikum,
And hi Todd! I don't know if I would say that no one cares about the food they eat. I believe that this is maybe something that is new or perhaps surprising to some. For example, I am sure you remember that many people we have encountered did not realize about toothpaste, soap, etc.... One thing I want to know more about is kosher geletin. When you hear of kosher bacon, you can't help but wonder. :?:
But you are right about being very careful what we eat, as Allah will even examine our stomachs on Judgement Day. It is important to educate ourselves as to what really is in our food. Especially in the Westren countries ( I think) as I have no idea what grocery shopping is like in the Eastren countries. ????? Not only do we need to beware of the products mentioned in Br. Ali's original post, but ANY pre-packaged or processed food. Even bread!
It should also be mentioned that the adverage person consumes 1.5 kilograms of CHEMICALS per year from eating processed foods. This leads to some forms of cancer, that were previously unknown in Eastren countries, but as it seems that America and it's products are everywhere maybe it applies to these places now as well. Even McDonald's exsists in some Muslim countries, which is odd, so it would not at all surprise me to hear that some of our other 'fine' offerings have made it in as well.
I'm not saying that anyone here patronizes McDonald's or even eats American products, weather they are available or not, but there are those that do for whatever reason. I would be interested in hearing more discussion on the food issue as well.
Salaam!
Jennifer
