Quote:Assalamu aleikum,
Just want to add, that to statistics I have read pologamy among muslims is 2 percent. I don't know how accurate that figure is. Does anyone have another figure and is ther any figure of the percentage of men and women having affairs outside the non-Muslim marriage? Of course that could be difficult to attain, since this is business done that one should not be proud of.
But one thing to bear in mind is that taking another wife as a Muslim man is connected with big RESPONSIBILITY, both emotionally and economically and should surely be one reason for not being practiced much. While having affairs outside marrige that result in children or not, does not bring with it much responsibility. And besides that, it is something that is done WITHOUT the consent of the other part in marriage.
Wasalam
Polygamy among Muslims varies from culture to culture - less among the secularist controlled societies than the others. For example in India, in the 1990s, the polygamy practiced among the Muslims was 4.1% while among the Hindus it was 5.3%; in Turkey, it is one of the lest, while among African Muslims it is more. However, according to Muslim sources, over world-wide it could not be more than 2%.
On the other hand, polygamy is very common among the Christia sects like Mormons. In the rest of the Christian World - Europe and the US, though monogamy is legally enforced - but the 'side dish sex' is very common among the married couples, both men and women. According to the American Churches Study 2000 - nearly 60% of Judo-Christian married couples were involved 'in some kind' of sex affair while married! That reminds me of the 'great statement' made by my young Jew associate:
"Why one has to buy a cow (marry), when he is only interested in drinking milk (sex)."
