JohnDoe,
I don't only BELIEVE that Allah, SWT, gave me the right and liberty to wear it, I KNOW so. From the best Source there is.
I would not fully agree with you that women in a 'free society', I assume you mean the western 'equal' society when you say that? has the choice. There ARE examples when you cannot wear it. The latest in the row is France, that actually due to denying Muslim women to wear their hijab, are condemning them to be illiterate. IF they don't in exchange build private schools for these girls so that they ALSO can partake in the 'equal' system that gives EVERYONE the right so study on EQUAL rights. Yes, I know that is the thought, but Muslim girls are not equally judged anyway so there you have a BIG lack in the 'equal' 'free' society. It works great on the paper level but not in reality. When you have exceptions there is no equality.
I agree it is wrong to force anyone to wear the hijab. To wear it is a decision that comes out of true CONVICTION, it is a RESPONSIBILITY as well as a RIGHT to wear it, and it cannot be dictated by anyone else than Allah, SWT. So then it is a human problem, and man made laws is not the best.
If you by 'We can all be good human beings without having to subscribe to one doctrine.' mean that it is not so important if Muslim women wear the hijab or not, I can tell you that you are badly mistaken. First of all you are not a women, secondly you are not a Muslim, third you don't believe in the Qur'an and fourth you don't even think that you approve of Islam, so if you are trying to make this to a point that you perhaps understand this matter better, I think you just have to give up that thought. You just will not understand what we REALLY are talking about.
Just try to humble yourself a bit and try to admit to yourself, that you are not ready yet to comprehend this matter. For your own sake.
But as for this as well as all the other issues, it is always possible to be updated.
Regards
