Football Anybody?
#11

Just like in the Christian church there seems to be some difference of opinion. I can agree that love of sports and obesession with sports teams isn't beneficial. I agree that a primary focus of sports activity should be physical fitness...I don't, however, play sports to get ready for battle.

I am glad that both agree that football (we call it soccer) should be fun.

The Fatwa humored me though in that so much of the edict was geared towards "not doing as the infidels do." If a muslim were to live in a world deviod of "infidel" influence than that muslim couldn't watch TV, eat a lot of foods, drive cars, fly airplanes etc...ALL "infidel" creations.

No curious, we do fly airplanes, but when we have to live in or visit land of infidels we do watch our food. For example I m sure u dont make such a comment when u go into a store and pass by the kushare rack. U just pass by, it is by default that it is there. U give Jews the right to want to eat Kushar. we do have the same right I think.

having to go contrary to what the infidels do is a command from the Messenger prayer and peace be upon him. For instance, this specific statement was made in a hadeeth in which the Messenger prayer and peace be upon him was commanding Muslim men to grow beards and shave the moustach in order to go against what the infidels look like.

likewise, as a Muslim woman I will be certainly identified with my head cover and long clothes on. Are u getting the point? but the advice strechtes as well for instance, we are supposed to celebrate xmas...etc and other feasts. For those who live in non Muslim countries, they dont.

This is what the statement of go against what the infidels do mean :) got it? :wavey:

Muslimah,

My point is this. It's odd that the emphasis in obstaining from certain activities is "not doing as the infidels do." If something is wrong to do, should the fact that it is wrong be enough not to do it? As a Christian I obstain from many things...but not because I don't want to be like others...I obstain from those things because it's wrong and it offends God.

I have a beard. I am a Christian. In fact, as you know, many Jews and Christians have beards. Does this mean that soon Muslims won't have beards because they don't want to do "as the infidel does?" As far as your head covering and clothing...there are many Christian sects which carry the same practice such as the Amish and Mennonites. These woman cover their heads and wear long cloths. Are you know commiting a sin because you do as the infidel?

My point is that sin shouldn't be defined by an act that others do...sin should be defined as somthing which offends God.

For clarification, just what exactly does 'infidel' mean? All I have to work with is the western/hollywood meaning.

Curious, if u read carefully the hadeeth I quoted, I said the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam adviced men to grow beards and shave moustach.

I m also aware that the bible even commands women to cover their heads.

We dont copy the non believers in order not to offend Allah, can u see this point.

arclight, infidel means a non believer in Allah

Muslimah. I understand. However, in the Fatwa I posted it's clear that the auther repeatedly says, "Don't do this as the infidel...and don't do that like the infidel....etc.

I figured as much, but wanted to be sure on the exact meaning.

The thing is, and I think this has been touched on in other threads, we are believers. Just that we follow a slightly different rule book, as it were.

Actually some arent really following any book at all which is why as somebody mentioned you see people as the Amish who still cover and groups here and there among the christians who stand out in look and practice despite looking or seeming odd.
