Football Anybody? - Curious Christian - 04-06-2006
I've seen this a few time printed in magazines. I guess this is a Fatwa published in Al Watan. It's an edict for new rules for soccer.
In the name of God the merciful and benevolent:
1. International terminology that heretics use, such as "foul," "penalty", "corner," "goal", "out" and others, should be abandoned and not said. Whoever says them should be punished and ejected from the game.
2. Do not call "foul" and stop the game if someone falls and sprains a hand or foot or the ball touches his hand, and do not give a yellow or red card to whoever was responsible for the injury or tackle. Instead, it should be adjudicated according to Sharia rulings concerning broken bones and injuries.
3. Do not follow the heretics, the Jews, the Christians and especially evil America regarding the number of players. Do not play with 11 people. Add to this number or decrease it.
4. Play in your regular clothes or your pyjamas or something like that, but not coloured shorts and numbered T-shirts, because shorts and T-shirts are not Muslim clothing. Rather, they are heretical and western clothing, so beware of imitating their fashion.
5. If you have fulfilled these conditions and intend to play soccer, play to strengthen the body in order better to struggle in the way of God on high and to prepare the body for when it is called to jihad. Soccer is not for passing time or the thrill of so-called victory.
6. Do not play in two halves. Rather, play in one half or three halves in order to completely differentiate yourselves from the heretics, the corrupted and the disobedient.
7. If neither of you beats the other, or "wins", as it is called, and neither puts the leather between the posts, do not add extra time or penalties. Instead leave the field, because winning with extra time and penalty kicks is the pinnacle of imitating heretics and international rules.
8. Young crowds should not gather to watch when you play because if you are there for the sake of sports and strengthening your bodies as you claimed, why would people watch you? You should make them join your physical fitness and jihad preparation, or you should say: "Go proselytise and seek out morally reprehensible acts in the markets and the press and leave us to our physical fitness."
9. You should spit in the face of whoever puts the ball between the posts or uprights and then runs in order to get his friends to follow him and hug him like players in America or France do, and you should punish him, for what is the relationship between celebrating, hugging and kissing and the sports that you are practising?
10. You should use two posts instead of three pieces of wood or steel that you erect in order to put the ball between them, meaning that you should remove the crossbar in order not to imitate the heretics and in order to be entirely distinct from the soccer system's despotic international rules.
11. Do not do what is called "substitution," that is, taking the place of someone who has fallen, because this is a practice of the heretics in America and elsewhere.
---Are those rules in line with what the Quran teaches? If so is it something you'd agree with?

who on earth would make such rules up ......if it was written by a muslim then clearly he has never played football in his life ad has too much hatred for the non muslims and the west ...........
If a non muslim wrote it then obviousy they are clearly mocking the muslims.......
if i had to play fooball by those rules i wouldnt play at all.....

Faris, i guess curious provided the source of the aticle which is Al Watan magazine.
Suhail, as far as i remember I read a fatwa explaining that sports in general must not be played for the sake of fame or gaining victory but only to strengthen the body in preparation for Jihad if it occurs. Besides the part saying that they should not play in sports clothes is explained thru the A`wra rules if u know what I mean.
and Faris, why did u expect it to be written by non Muslims to mock Muslims.
if u examine it, when they say dont play in halves they mean dont divide.
and when they say that youngesters shouldnt be sitting to watch, dont u know what football do with people's time? i did start a thread on the dilemma we had here in Egypt during the African cup. It was really a disaster.
If such crowd with such enthusiam and courage would just walk without any training or arms saying Allah u Akbar instead of OOOOO goaaaaal. Palestine would be free by now and Aqsa would be back.
But instead, they sit there watching like being hynotized, missing one prayer after the other. u think the players stop for prayer when the call comes on Faris? no they dont....
you think the audiance go out of the staduim to join a masjed? no they dont suahil...
Well just reconsider the whole article before making a comment.

ok firstly i agree with some of your points ......
But let me ask a few questions ......
can football be played for the sole purpose of having fun?
is it wrong to be a bit competitive when playing football ?
when it comes to football i will always be a bit "for" rather than "anti" i play football 3 times a week and alhumdulillah we never miss salat and also we wear proper clothing to cover our legs.
If playing football for fun with friends is wrong ...... then i dont agree with it because where i live in uk if the youngsters are not meeting there friends and having fun whe going for football then they will go some place else to meet up with friends and have fun ......and these places are nightclubs etc which are definetely haraam so i think before any one gives a "fatwa" or something they should look a all aspects of it

Jazakum Allah khairan suhail for clarifying your points, i was trying to explain the points included in the article for a non muslim. u clearly explained that u wear proper clothing and never missing salat.
I dont think playing for fun is wrong, after all the Messenger allowed fun dancing of habasha during Eid. Of course we are entitled to have fun.
can u see my point, i was explaing why this or that was said as such in the article, rather than being quite about it. i mean curious didnt understand and wanted to.

If u carefully examine the fatwa, he didnt say it is haram, he only sat a number of rules that must be followed which i dont see harmful. My reply was for u objecting to the rules, my reply was an effort to explain how the rules conform to Islamic laws. playing sports for this particular reason as you mentioned is actually highly recommended. However, let me add that u better take the niyah that u r doing this in order to avoid falling into haram. In such a situation, u will not only have fun, but also gain reward and closeness to Allah.
alhamdulelah u dont miss salat, but those crowd in a staduium they sure do, are u getting my point Suhail. This is becoming like drugs. i m sure u understand what i mean.

i was going to move on to say why watching football an supporting football is ok but it isnt so im not going to bother with that side of football......
and yes when we do go to the stadiums we sometimes miss salat but in the summer its ok as zohar is at 1.30 and asr it at 6.30 and footbal is at 3.00 till 5.00 so in summer we dont miss salat when going to watch football........but i know it is haraam watching football as all their legs r not covered so inshallah some day i will lose my love for the game of football.

If u also see what I mean, my focus here was to help Curious get a better understanding of why this person had mentioned this point or that. I can relay to the fatwa trying to change some of the used terms like goal for example. In Arabic the word used to express this is hadaf which is a goal yes. As far as I can understand, he means that we should not call something related to entertainment as a goal. Although for example the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam highly encouraged us to enterain our hearts and recreate ourselves in order to be capable of continuing to carry on our Islamic responsibilites.
The only thing I do myself on the personal level totally object to this sports mania, is that it turns into an objective itself. I mean when u play with your friends for fun and to avoid seeking haram recreation, this is excellent. But we shouldnt turn it into a goal on its own. The Messenger salla Allah a`lhyee wa sallam raced with Aaesh and did involve into similar recreation activities. But we should not make it into an objetive and aim of life
