Salam alikom
Adhering to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
Praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Master of the Prophets and Messengers, and upon all his family and companions.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to teach the Sunnah to his companions in word and deed, and urged them to follow it, as he said in his hadeeth: “Adhere to my Sunnah” and “Whoever neglects my Sunnah does not belong to me.” ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no Prophet whom Allaah sent to any nation before me, but he had disciples from among his nation, and companions who followed his Sunnah and obeyed his commands.” (Narrated by Muslim, no. 71).
Some aspects of the Sunnah are waajib (obligatory) and some are mustahabb (encouraged). The Muslim should follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), whether it is waajib or mustahabb, as long as it is proven in sound reports. The Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) used to spread the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) among people and they called people to follow it.
The proper number of Takbeeraat during prayer is Sunnah
‘Ikrimah said: I prayed behind an old man in Makkah (i.e., Zuhr) and he said Takbeer twenty-two times. I said to Ibn ‘Abbaas that the man was a fool. He said, “may your mother lose you! The Sunnah of Abu’l-Qaasim (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was to say Takbeer five times in each rak’ah, plus the Takbeer for ihraam and for standing up for the third rak’ah. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 746).
Sitting muftarishan in prayer is Sunnah
‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abd-Allaah narrated: I used to see ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) sitting with his legs crossed when he sat (to recite Tashahhud during the prayer). I was a mere youngster, and I did the same, but ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar told me not to do that. He said the Sunnah is to put your right foot upright and to fold the left foot beneath you [this is what is meant by Iftiraash or “sitting muftarishan” – Translator]. I said to him, ‘You do not do that.’ He said, ‘My legs do not let me [i.e., because of old age or sickness].’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 784).
It is Sunnah for a traveller to shorten his prayers if he misses praying a prescribed prayer with an imaam
Moosaa ibn Salamah al-Hudhali said: I asked Ibn ‘Abbaas, how should I pray if I am in Makkah and I do not pray with the imaam? He said, Two rak’ahs is the Sunnah of Abu’l-Qaasim (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). (Narrated by Muslim, no. 1111).
Hajj al-Tamattu’ is Sunnah
[Hajj al-Tamattu’: this is when the pilgrim enters ihraam for ‘Umrah only, performs ‘Umra, finishes ihraam and then later enters a new ihraam for Hajj – Translator].
Muhammad ibn al-Muthannaa and Ibn Bashshaar said, Muhammad ibn Ja’far told us, Shu’bah told us: I heard Abu Jamrah al-Duba’i say: “I wanted to do Hajj al-Tamattu’, and some people told me not to do that. I went to Ibn ‘Abbaas and asked him about it, and he told me to do it. Then I went home and slept, and someone came to me in my dream and said, An accepted ‘Umrah and Hajj Mabroor [Hajj done in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and accepted by Allaah]. I came to Ibn ‘Abbaas and told him about what I had seen (in my dream) and he said: Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, the Sunnah of Abu’l-Qaasim (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). (Narrated by Muslim, 2183, and by al-Bukhaari, no. 1465).
Praying two rak’ahs after each Tawaaf is Sunnah
Ismaa’eel ibn Umayyah said: I said to al-Zuhri that ‘Ataa’ was saying that the prescribed prayer was sufficient and there was no need to do two rak’ahs after Tawaaf. He said: The Sunnah is better. Abu’l-Qaasim never did Tawaaf seven times around the Ka’bah but he prayed two Rak’ahs afterwards. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Baab salaa al-Nabi (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) li suboo’ihi rak’atayn.)
Keeping the khutbah short and hastening to stand at ‘Arafaah is Sunnah
Saalim said: ‘Abd al-Malik wrote to al-Hajjaaj telling him not to differ from Ibn ‘Umar concerning the (rituals of) Hajj. Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) came at noon on the Day of ‘Arafaah, and I was with him. He called at the pavilion of al-Hajjaaj, who came out wearing a wrap dyed with safflower. He said, “What is the matter, O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahmaan?’ [ibn ‘Umar] said, ‘Let us go, if you want to follow the Sunnah.’ [Al-Hajjaaj] said, ‘Now?’ [ibn ‘Umar] said, ‘Yes.’ Al-Hajjaaj said, ‘Wait for me, while I pour water on my head, then I will come out.’ So Ibn ‘Umar waited until al-Hajjaaj came out, then he walked between me and my father. I said, ‘If you want to follow the Sunnah, keep the khutbah short and hasten to stand at ‘Arafaah.’ He looked at ‘Abd-Allaah and when ‘Abd-Allaah noticed that, he said, ‘he is telling the truth.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 1550).
Going from Muzdalifah to Mina at daybreak is Sunnah
‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Yazeed said: “We went out with ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) to Makkah, then we came to Muzdalifah and prayed the two prayers [Maghrib and ‘Ishaa’], each with its own Adhaan and Iqaamah, and we ate dinner between the two prayers. Then he prayed Fajr when dawn came and some were saying that dawn had come and others were saying that it had not come. Then he waited until the day got brighter, then he said: if the Ameer al-Mu’mineen [‘Uthmaan] moves on towards Mina now, he will be following the Sunnah. I am not sure which came first, ‘Abd-Allaah’s comment or ‘Uthmaan’s setting out for Mina. He kept reciting Talbiyah until he reached Jamrat al-‘Aqabah and threw the stones on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr).” (al-Bukhaari, 1571).
Doing the prayer before the khutbah on Eid is Sunnah
Taariq ibn Shihaab said: the first person who put the khutbah before the prayer on Eid was Marwaan. A man stood up and said to Marwaan, ‘You have gone against the Sunnah.’ Abu Sa’eed said, ‘This man has done what he was supposed to, for I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, “Whoever sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand [by taking action], and if he cannot, then with his tongue [by speaking out], and if he cannot, then with his heart [by feeling that it is wrong], and that is the weakest of faith.”’ (Abu ‘Eesaa said: a saheeh hasan hadeeth, 2098).
Sacrificing a camel whilst it is standing up and its left foreleg is tied is Sunnah
Ziyaad ibn Jubayr said: I saw Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) come to a man who had made his camel sit down so he could slaughter it. He said to him, ‘Make it stand up with its foreleg tied, for this is the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).’ (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1598).
When drinking, one should pass the vessel to one’s right
Anas ibn Maalik said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to our house and asked for something to drink. We milked a ewe then added some water from this well of mine. We gave it to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he drank. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar were to his left, and a bedouin was to his right. When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) finished drinking, ‘Umar said, ‘here is Abu Bakr, O Messenger of Allaah,’ pointing to him. But the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gave the cup to the bedouin, not to Abu Bakr or ‘Umar. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Those who are on the right, those who are on the right, those who are on the right.” Anas said, This is Sunnah, this is Sunnah, this is Sunnah.
(Agreed upon; this version narrated by Muslim, 3785).
Dividing one’s time equally among co-wives is Sunnah
Anas said: It is part of the Sunnah, if a man marries a virgin after having married a previously-married woman, he should spend seven nights with her, then divide his time equally (among the co-wives). And if he marries a previously-married woman after having married a virgin, he should spend three nights with her, then divide his time equally…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4813).
In cases of divorce the Sunnah should be followed
Chapter: the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning): “O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them at their ‘Iddah (prescribed periods), and count (accurately) their ‘Iddah (periods)…” [al-Talaaq 65:1]. We should count the days and know how many days have passed at any given time. The way of divorcing according to the Sunnah is to divorce a woman when she is taahir (pure, i.e., not during her period or post-natal bleeding) and without having had intercourse with her since she became taahir, and the divorce should be witnessed by two witnesses. (Saheeh al-Bukhaari).
When departing this world
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that when the deceased was placed in the grave [Abu Khaalid said on one occasion: when the deceased was placed in the lahd (niche) of his grave], the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Bismillaah wa Billaahi wa ‘ala millati Rasool-illaah (in the name of Allaah and by the help of Allaah and on the religion of the Messenger of Allaah).” On another occasion, he said: “Bismillaah wa Billaahi wa ‘ala Sunnati Rasool-illaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) (in the name of Allaah and by the help of Allaah and on the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)).” (Abu ‘Eesa said: this is a ghareeb hasan hadeeth with this isnaad. 967).
Seeking permission to enter three times is part of the Sunnah
Abu Sa’eed said: Abu Moosa sought permission to enter upon ‘Umar. He said, Assalaamu ‘alaykum, may I enter? ‘Umar said, That was once, then he kept silent for a while. Abu Moosa again said, Assalaamu ‘alaykum, may I enter? ‘Umar said, That was twice, then he kept silent for a while. Abu Moosa again said, Assalaamu ‘alaykum, may I enter? ‘Umar said, That was three times. Then Abu Moosa went away. ‘Umar asked the doorkeeper, What happened? The doorkeeper said, He went away. ‘Umar said, bring him back. When he came back, ‘Umar said, What is this that you have done? Abu Moosa said, It is the Sunnah. ‘Umar said: is it? Then he said, I did not know this… (Abu ‘Eesa said: a saheeh hasan hadeeth, 2614)
Ibn ‘Abbaas recited al-Faatihah aloud during a Janaazah (funeral) prayer in order to teach people the Sunnah
Talhah ibn ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Awf said: I prayed the Janaazah prayer behind Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), and he recited the Opening of the Book (i.e., he recited al-Faatihah aloud). He said: (I did that) so that they might learn that this is Sunnah. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1249)
The imaams denounced those who go against the Sunnah.
Al-Tirmidhi narrated in his Sunan that one of the scholars of the madhaahib said: Salaat al-istisqaa’ (prayer for rain) should not be done, but they should make du’aa’ and then leave, all of them. Abu ‘Eesa said: this is against the Sunnah.
Al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his Saheeh:
Chapter on following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):
Ibn ‘Awn said: there are three things which I love for myself and my brothers: this Sunnah, that they should learn about it and ask about it; the Qur’aan, that they should seek to understand it and ask about it; and that they should leave people alone unless it is for a good reason.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Kitaab al-I’tisaam bi’l-Kitaab wa’s-Sunnah).
Let those people fear Allaah who think of the Sunnah as unimportant and say it is only the matter of externals and does not matter, and they go against it deliberately, thinking that this proves how moderate and reasonable they are, as they claim. They are doomed and lost, for the Sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is most dear to us.
Even if a particular aspect of the Sunnah is mustahhab (encouraged) rather than waajib (obligatory), is there not a reward for us in following it? Do we have so much hasanah that we do not need to seek more?
O my brothers and sisters, may Allaah have mercy on me and on you, strive to follow every proven Sunnah that you learn from your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and do not neglect it, for it will benefit you on a Day when neither wealth nor sons will be of any avail. Adhere to the Sunnah and teach it to your children. Revive it in the midst of those who are unaware of it, so that you may be among the most blessed of people through the intercession of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
O Allaah, help us to follow the Sunnah. Cause us to live in accordance to the Sunnah and to die adhering to the Sunnah. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

Pick Your Teeth!
It's one of the greatest sins and yet it's something we do day after day.
Sometimes we don't even realise it. You're just chatting away with your friends and you begin to talk about somebody else. Our whole lives are based around 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', soaps based on lying, backbiting etc. But look at what the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said about it:
It was narrated that Ibn Mas’ood said: “We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when a man got up and left. Immediately another man spoke disparagingly of him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him: ‘Clean between your teeth.’ He asked, ‘Why do I need to clean between my teeth? I have not eaten any meat.’ He said, ‘You have eaten your brother’s flesh.’” (Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani).
As Allah tells us in the Quran:"Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No, you would hate it." (Al-Qur'an 49:12)
But What If It's True?!
The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam told us:"Backbiting is to say something about someone they wouldn't like said about them....If what bad you said about them is true, then you have backbited and if it is false then you have slandered them."(MUSLIM)
If you're still not convinced of how big a sin backbiting really is, then look at the punishment Allah has in store for the backbiters.
The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam described:
"On the night of me'raaj I passed by some people who had metal hooks in their hands and were clawing at their faces and their necks with them. I asked Gabriel 'Who were these people?' He said 'These are the people who eat the flesh of human beings and disgrace them' (Abu Dawud).
This is how big a sin backbiting is looked upon and yet we continue to backbite without a second thought. Next time you lie, talk about somebody, remember Allah (swt) and the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam and put them in front of you before you speak.
Just having a Laugh!
Maybe we think it's all right to take the mick out of someone so long as we say it to their face. We'll make fun of the way someone talks, walks,or how they look. Allah warns us against such behaviour:
"O you who believe. Let not some men laugh at others, it may be the that they are better than you. Nor let some women laugh at others it may be that they are better than you. Nor abuse each other, nor be sarcastic to eachother by using offensive nicknames..." (Al-Qur'an 49:11)
Don't forget that Allah made us the way we are, so how can you even think of making fun of his creation?
Cool to Swear?
Listen to yourself and to your friends speaking one day - nearly every sentence will have a swear word in it, thinking it's cool and macho to swear, copying the idols of TV and the cinema. Is it really 'cool' to swear?
The Hellfire is far from being cool. People will wish they were cool
then rather than being cool in this world. Remember! That every time you speak, an angel writes down what you say, and that one day you will have to answer for every single word you ever uttered. So if you swear at someone then it's written down as a sin against you. You're only harming yourself.
The Prophet sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said that: "Abusing a Muslim is a sin and fighting with him is disbelief." (MUSLIM).
'But sometimes you just have to swear'!
We've all been there - you're just so angry with somebody and the only way you can express yourself, is to swear at them. The solution? ...
Don't get angry in the first place.
A man came to the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam one day and said:
"Advise me". The prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said "Don't become angry. Don't become angry. Don't become angry".... "When one of you gets angry while he is standing up, he should sit down. Then anger will leave him, and if not then he should lie down" (Ahmad)
So let us follow this beautiful advice of the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam and remember that anger is from Shaytaan. If someone angers you or swears at you, then don't harm yourself by doing the same but respond in a better way as Allah says in the Qur'an:
"Repel evil with what is better. Then he who was your worst enemy will become your best friend." (Al-Qur'an 41:33)
"It wasn't me. Honest."
How often do we say such a phrase or say that "I was only joking". We treat lies as being trivial.
However we are told that: "Allah's messenger did not hate anything more than lying"(Ahmed).
The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam was once asked "Can a Muslim be a coward?" He Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam replied "Yes." and then asked "Can a Muslim be a miser?" and the reply was "Yes." The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam was then asked "Can a Muslim be a liar?" The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam replied "NO! A Muslim can never be a liar".Furthermore, he said "Truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to paradise...Lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the hellfire." (Bukhari).
As we know that one lie leads to another ten lies which lead to bad actions. Remember you can lie and think that you have got away with it but on the day of Judgement your hands, tongue and feet will bear testimony against you and tell the truth.
But it's only words!
One day one of the companions asked the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam "O Messenger of Allah. Will we be called to account for what we say?" He replied "May you be lost to your mother - people will be thrown, faces down into the hellfire, only on account to what their tongues said." (Tirmidhi).
Indeed the tongue controls the rest of your body. A well-controlled tongue will keep us within Islam but a loose tongue will destroy us. The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said:
"When a person gets up in the morning, all the parts of his body make a plea to his tongue saying; 'Fear Allah regarding us, because we follow you. If you are right then we shall also be right , and if you are wrong then we shall also be wrong." (Tirmidhi)
Instead of swearing, lying and engaging in useless talk we can use our tongues in better ways and what better than telling people about Islam.
Allah says:
"Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah and works righteousness and says I am one of those who bow down in Islam" (41:33)
Your tongue can save you as well!.Indeed if you control your tongue and speak good then paradise can be yours. The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said: "Whoever can guarantee me two things I can guarantee them Paradise." The companions asked "What, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied "What is between his jaws (his tongue) and his legs (private parts)."(Bukhari)
"I've lied and backbited, sworn and made fun of others. I must be doomed I must be going to hell!"
NO!Allah (swt) tells us in the Quran:
"O my servants who have wronged themselves, never despair of the mercy of Allah for truly he forgives all sins. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (39:53)
So if you really repent and turn back to Allah and promise not to commit the sin again then truly Allah's promise is true and He will forgive you.
If you've backbitten someone - go and tell the person whom you backbited and apologise sincerely and ask them to forgive you. But if you think that the situation will get worse then turn back to Allah sincerely begging for his forgiveness then to make up for what you said, go around and talk good of him.
The Best Example
As we know that the best person to have ever lived is the Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam and he is the best of example for mankind. If we follow him we can never go wrong. Ayesha RadiAllahu Ta'ala Anha the Prophet's wife described the Prophet's conduct as follows: "He was neither a obscene talker nor a user of bad words. He did not shout nor did he repay evil with evil. He used to forgive people and overlook their sins." (Tirmidhi)
Final Advice: A beautiful saying of the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi
Wasallam that will ensure the protection of our tongue.
The Messenger of Allah Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said:
“Whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day, let him say something good or else let him keep silent.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, hadeeth 6135)

Praise be to Allah and prayer and peace be upon His Messenger Mohamed
As Salam Alykom
Sister Star asked me a question yesterday, so I thought Insh a Allah why not share it with the answer with everybody. She was discussing with someone that we must marry for the sake of Allah with the purpose of procreation and establishing a Muslim family. Her party made fun of her, she didn't believe that this must be our objective for getting married and asked her for an evidence from Quran. Well the evidence in Quran will be shocking for her. The Ayah says:
" Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Verily, my Salât (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)." Quran 6:162)
La hawala wala qowata ilabillah. With a thorough look, one realizes that not only marriage which is simply part of our lives in this world that must be dedicated to Allah, but rather our whole life, in addition to other items as mentioned in the ayah which Allah topped with prayer. And just take note that Allah started with prayer although one may say that prayer is simply part of life. Yes it sure is. However, due to its major importance for a Muslim, Allah made special emphasis on it putting it on top of other matters which must be dedicated only to Allah. In simple explanation, if at any point one would for example excel in his/her prayer only when people may see, the salat would be dedicated for people and not for Allah. Like wise the sacrifice. The order of prayer followed by sacrifice of course is a reference to Eidu Aldha " Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only)." (Quran 108:1). then Allah brought the part of living. Living includes everything, work, education, marriage, food, sleep, entertainment and a long list of life activities. All with no exception must be fully and only dedicating to Allah. Have we fail to fulfill the condition of Niyah (intention), yes that is the point, Niyah in everything we do must be only to Allah. In case we fail to do so, therefore, the activity would be dedicated to ourselves. In the case subject of discussion, marriage, would be for love, shelter, financial support, beauty, position, social status or other. We certainly will attain a benefit, however, the benefit would be a self satisfactory one, with a very temporary short term impact. May be in some cases this impact may last only for the first week of marriage. After which people will find no solid ground to work out things. On the contrary when marriage is concluded for the sake of Allah, we don't mean u go and marry someone you don't like, Allah Sobhanhu wa Ta`ala blesses the marriage, makes things easy, inspires the person to even look at difficult situations as means to get closer to Allah, closely Assists the parents with raising children and many more benefits. Most important of which is attaining the satisfaction of Allah.
Wallah a`alam

Short Temper
Anger is a tendency that comes from the Shaitan. Only Allah (SWT) knows how much evil and sin results from it. Hence Islam has a great deal to say about this negative characteristic and the Prophet (SAW) described remedies for ridding oneself of this problem and limiting its effects. These include the following:
Seeking refuge with Allah from the Shaitan. Sulaymaan ibn Sard said: “I was sitting with the Prophet (SAW), and there were two men swearing at one another. One of them was red in the face and the veins of his neck were standing out. The Prophet (SAW) said: ‘I know a word which, if only he would say it, this (anger) would leave him. If he said, “A’oodhu billaahi min al-shaytaan (I seek refuge with Allah from the Shaitan),”, this [anger] would leave him.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 6/377).
He (SAW) also said:
“If a man gets angry and says ‘A’oodhu billah (I seek refuge with Allah),’ his anger will cease.” (Saheeh al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, no. 695).
Keeping quiet. The Messenger (SAW) said:
“If any one of you gets angry, let him keep quiet.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 1/239; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 693, 4027).
Anger usually makes a person lose control, often to the extent that he may utter words of kufr (Allah forbid), or curses, or the word of divorce (talaq) which will destroy his family, or foul language that will earn him the enmity of others. Keeping quiet is the way to avoid all of these evils.
Keeping still. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
“If any one of you gets angry, let him sit down if he is standing. If his anger goes away, (that is good), otherwise let him lie down.”
The narrator of this hadeeth was Abu Dharr (RA), who told the following story: he was watering his animals at a trough, when some other people came along. He said, “Who among you will help Abu Dharr to water his animals and ....?” A man said, “I will,” but he broke the trough. Abu Dharr was standing, so he sat down, then he lay down. Someone asked him, “O Abu Dharr, why did you sit down then lie down?” He said, “Because the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said … [and quoted the Hadith].” (The Hadith with the whole story is reported in Musnad Ahmad, 5/152. See also Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 694).
According to another report, Abu Dharr (RA) was watering his animals at a trough when another man made him angry, so he sat down… (Fayd al-Qadeer al-Mannaawi, 1/408).
One of the benefits of this Prophetic teaching is that it prevents the angry person from doing something crazy and out of control. An angry person could inflict harm or even kill – as we shall see shortly – or he could destroy property and so on. Sitting down makes it less likely that he will explode in this fashion, and lying down makes it even less likely that he will do something reckless or harmful. Al-‘Allaamah al-Khattaabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his commentary on Abu Dawood: “The one who is standing is ready to move and destroy things. The one who is sitting is less likely to do so, and the one who is lying is not able to do anything of the sort. It seems that the Prophet (SAW) commanded the angry person to sit down or lie down in order to prevent him from doing anything that he would later regret. And Allaah knows best.” (Sunan Abi Dawood wa ma’ahu ma’aalim al-sunan, 5/141)
Remembering the advice of the Messenger of Allah (SAW). Abu Hurayrah (SAW) reported that a man came to the Prophet (SAW) and said: “Advise me.” He said: “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the response was, “Do not become angry.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath al-Baari, 10/465).
According to another report, the man said, “I thought about what the Prophet (SAW) had said, and I realized that anger is the source of all evil.” (Musnad Ahmad, 5/373).
“Do not get angry, and Paradise will be yours.” (A saheeh hadeeth. Saheeh al-Jaami’, 7374. Ibn Hajar attributed it to al-Tabaraani. See al-Fath, 4/465).
Remembering what Allah (SWT) has promised to those who avoid the causes of anger and strive to control themselves is the best way to extinguish the flames of anger. The Prophet (SAW) has told us about this great reward:
“Whoever suppresses his anger at the time when he could express it openly, Allah will fill his heart with contentment on the Day of Resurrection.” (Reported by al-Tabaraani, 12/453; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 176).
Another immense reward is described in the Hadith: “Whoever suppresses his anger when he is able to vent it, Allah will call him before all the people on the Day of Resurrection and let him choose whoever of the hoor al-‘iyn he wishes.” (Reported by Abu Dawood, 4777, and others. Classed as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6518).
Knowing the high rank and distinction that is bestowed upon the one who controls himself. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said,
“The strong man is not the one who can wrestle another to the ground; the strong man is the one who can control himself when he is angry.” (Reported by Ahmad, 2/236. The hadeeth is agreed upon).
The more angry a person gets, the more highly valued is his self-control. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“The real strong man is the one who gets intensely angry, so that his face reddens and his hair stands on end, but he suppresses his anger.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 5/367; classed as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3859).
The Prophet (SAW) used an incident that took place in front of his Sahabah as an opportunity to reinforce this lesson. Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW) passed by some people who were wrestling, and asked, “What is this?” They told him, “So-and-so is a strong man. No one challenges him but he beats them at wrestling.” The Prophet (SAW) said,
“Shall I not tell you who is stronger than him? A man who is mistreated by another, but suppresses his anger, has defeated his own shaytan and the shaytan of the one who mistreated him.” (Reported by al-Bazzaar. Ibn Hajar said that its isnaad is hasan. Al-Fath, 10/519).
Following the guidance of the Prophet (SAW) with regard to anger.
He is our example, and his attitude towards anger is clearly demonstrated in many ahaadeeth, of which one of the most famous was reported by Anas (RA), who said: “I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (SAW), and he was wearing a Najraani cloak with a stiff collar. He was accosted by a Bedouin who pulled his cloak roughly. I looked at the Prophet’s (SAW) neck and saw the marks left by the collar. The Bedouin said: ‘O Muhammad, give me some of the wealth of Allah that you have!’ The Prophet (SAW) turned to him and smiled, and ordered that he should be given something.” (Reported by al-Bazzaar. Ibn Hajar said that its isnaad is hasan).
Another way in which we may follow the example of the Prophet (SAW) is by making our anger for the sake of Allah (SWT), when the limits set by Allah (SWT) are violated. This is the worthy kind of anger. The Prophet (SAW) became angry when he was told about the imaam who was putting people off praying because his recitation was too long. He became angry when he saw a curtain decorated with pictures of animate creatures in ‘Aisha’s (RA) house. He became angry when Usamah (RA) spoke to him about the Makhzoomi woman who was guilty of theft, and said to him, “Are you interceding concerning one of the punishments prescribed by Allah?” He became angry when he was asked questions he disliked. His anger was only for the sake of Allah (SWT).
Knowing that suppressing anger is one of the signs of taqwa (piety).
Allah (SWT) has praised certain people in His Book, and the Prophet (SAW) highly commended them. There have been prepared for them Gardens as wide as the heavens and the earth. One of their characteristics is that they
“… spend (in Allah’s Cause - deeds of charity, alms, etc.) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers).” (Al-Imran 3:134)
These are the people whose good qualities Allaah has mentioned, people whom others admire and want to catch up with. Another of their characteristics is that
“...when they are angry, they forgive.” (Ash-Shura 42:37)
Paying attention when one is reminded.
Anger is something natural, with regard to which people differ. It may be very hard for a person not to get angry, but a sincere person, if he becomes angry and is reminded about Allah (SWT), will remember Him and will stay within the limits that He has prescribed. Some examples of this follow.
Ibn ‘Abbaas (RA) reported that a man asked permission to see ‘Umar (RA), and permission was given. The man said, “O son of al-Khattaab, by Allah, you are not giving us much, and you are not ruling us fairly!” ‘Umar (RA) became so angry that he was about to hit the man, but al-Hirr ibn Qays (who was among the people sitting with ‘Umar) said, “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, Allah said to His Prophet (SAW):
'Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish (i.e., don’t punish them).’ (Al-A'raf 7:199),
and this man is one of the foolish.” By Allah, ‘Umar (RA) did not take the matter any further when this was recited to him. He adhered to the words of Allah (SWT) (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 8/304).
This is how the Muslim should be, not like the evil hypocrite who, when he got angry and was told about the hadeeth of the Prophet (SAW), and was advised by one of the Companions of the Prophet (SAW) to seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan, said, “Do you think there is something wrong with me? Do you think I am crazy? Go away!” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 1/465).
We seek refuge with Allah (SWT) from failure. Ameen!
Knowing the bad effects of anger.
The bad effects of anger are many, harming both the self and others. A person may swear and utter obscenities, and may hit others, lashing out with no control. It may even lead to killing. The following story contains a lesson.
‘Alqamah ibn Waa’il reported that his father (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: “I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) when a man came along, leading another by a twisted rope. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this man killed my brother.’ The Messenger of Allah (SAW) asked, ‘Did you kill him?’ He said, ‘Yes, I killed him.’ He asked, ‘How did you kill him?’ He said, ‘He and I were hitting trees to make the leaves fall (so we could use them for animal fodder). He swore at me, so I got angry and hit him on the side of the head with an axe, and I killed him.’…” (Reported by Muslim in al-Saheeh, 1307).
Even if anger does not go as far as this, there may still be broken bones and injuries. If the person with whom a man is angry runs away, he may turn his anger upon himself, tearing his clothes, slapping his cheeks, falling unconscious, or breaking dishes and furniture.
One of the worst things that result from anger and cause social ills and family breakdown is talaq (divorce). Ask many of those who have divorced their wives how and when it happened, and they will tell you, “It was in a moment of anger.”
Lives are shattered and children are lost as a result. Feelings of regret and failure haunt people’s minds, and life becomes bitter – all because of anger. If only they had remembered Allah (SWT) and come back to their senses, restrained their anger and sought refuge with Allah (SWT) from the Shaitan, what happened would not have happened. Going against shari'ah only ever results in loss.
The physical harm that results from anger is very serious, as the doctors describe, such as thrombosis, high blood pressure, fatal heart attacks, diabetes, etc.
We ask Allah (SWT) for good health. Ameen!
The angry person should think about himself at the time of anger.
If the angry person could see himself in the mirror at the time of anger, he would despise himself and how he looks when his color changes, he shakes uncontrollably, his face reddens, the veins of his neck stand out and he behaves like a crazy person. He would be put off by his own appearance, but it is well known that the ugliness that exists inside a person is even worse than any that may appear on the outside. How happy the Shaitan must be when someone is in this state!
We seek refuge with Allah (SWT) from the Shaitan and from failure. Ameen!
Du’aa’.
This is the believer’s constant weapon. He asks his Lord to rid him of evils, problems and bad characteristics, and he seeks refuge with Allah (SWT) from falling into the pit of kufr and wrongdoing caused by anger, because one of the three qualities which will save a person from Hellfire is being just and fair both at times of contentment and at times of anger. (Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3039). One of the du’aa’s of the Prophet (SAW) was:
“Allaahumma bi ‘ilmika’l-ghaybi wa qudratika ‘ala’l-khalqi aheeni ma ‘alimta’l-hayaata khayran li, wa tawaffani idha ‘alimta’l-wafaata khayran li. Allaahumma wa as’aluka khashyataka fi’l-ghaybi wa’l-shahaadah, wa as’aluka kalimat al-ikhlaasi fi’l-ridaa wa’l-ghadab, wa as’aluka’l-qasda fi’l-faqri wa’l-ghinaa, wa as’aluka na’eeman la yanfad, wa qurrata ‘aynin la tanqati’, wa as’aluka’l-ridaa bi’l-qadaa’, wa as’aluka bard al-‘aysh ba’d al-mawt, wa as’aluka ladhdhat al-nadhr ila wajhika wa’l-shawqa ilaa liqaa’ik, fi ghayri darraa’ mudirrah wa laa fitnati mudillah. Allaahumma zayyinnaa bi zeenati’l-eemaan wa’j’alnaa hudaatan muhtadeen"
(O Allah, by Your knowledge of the Unseen and Your power over all creation, keep me alive so long as You know life is good for me, and bring about my death when you know death is good for me. O Allah, I ask You to make me fear You in secret and in the open, I ask You to make me speak sincerely at times of contentment and at times of anger, I ask You to make me be moderate in poverty and in wealth, I ask You for a blessing that does not end, contentment that never ceases, and for acceptance of Your decree. I ask You for a good life after death, and I ask You for the joy of looking upon Your face and the longing to meet You, with no harmful adversity or misleading trial (fitnah). O Allah, adorn us with the beauty of faith, guide us and let us be a means of guidance for others).” (Reported by al-Nisaa’i in al-Sunan, 3/55; and by al-Haakim. Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1301).
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

MMR vaccines can contain pork |

Muslim babies' MMR jabs have traces of pork
Injections illegal under Islamic law, says imam
BY VICKY COLLINS
THOUSANDS of Muslim babies in Scotland have been injected with a
derivative of pork contained in a major child vaccine, The Herald can
reveal.
One of the two triple measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines used
by GPs in Britain are made using porcine gelatin, which is forbidden
in Islam.
Public health officials in Glasgow admitted that they had only begun
informing parents in the last week.
Strict Muslims can only use medicines containing derivatives of pork
in a medical emergency when there is no other option.
Muslim leaders across Scotland reacted angrily to the revelation and
are demanding that Muslim parents must be warned about any medication
that may contain pork derivatives to allow them to make an informed
choice.
Habib Rauf, imam at the Glasgow Central Mosque, said: "I did not know
it contained porcine gelatin. I have a three-year-old child who was
recently given the MMR vaccine and if I had known about this I would
not have let my child have the vaccination."
Generally, patients never see the full ingredients list for vaccines,
although doctors will check if there are any medical conditions that
lead to side- effects.
The vaccine with gelatin which is used widely in Britain is made by
Aventis Pasteur, while Merck makes another vaccine containing porcine
gelatin which is used widely across the world, but not in the UK.
Another vaccine used in the UK is made by Priorix and is free of the
material. However, usage of either one depends on availability.
Between them, Aventis Pasteur and Merck have offices in 41 countries
across the world, including Arab nations such as Egypt, the Gulf and
Saudi Arabia, as well as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim
nation.
A spokesman for Aventis Pasteur admitted the company was aware of the
possible implications of using such ingredients for religious groups.
He claimed it was "not a problem" because the gelatin was broken down
into peptides, and was therefore refined and not pure gelatin. He
confirmed there was no vegetarian option. He declined to comment on
when the company first began using porcine gelatin in MMR. Merck was
unavailable for comment.
However, Muslims said the ingredient still would be a concern because
it was sourced from pig, and said an alternative to porcine gelatin,
such as agar, should be used, or a warning given to all parents who
were considering the jab for their child.
Mohammad Faroghul Quadri, imam at the Khazra Mosque, Glasgow,
said: "The gelatin may be broken down, but those ingredients still
come from pork originally. This gelatin from pork is totally illegal
under Islamic law."
Mohammed Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Govan, said: "I am sure if it
is the case that MMR contains pork gelatin then that would be a
concern for the Muslim community."
Unlike Muslims, Jews are only forbidden to eat pork, and have no
concerns about its use in medicines, according to Judith Tankel, who
sits on the committee of the Glasgow Council of Christians and Jews.
She said: "There is no problem with us wearing shoes or clothes made
using pigs and certainly injections or medicine containing
derivatives of pig are no problem."
Dr Syed Ahmed, immunisation co-ordinator for Greater Glasgow NHS,
said he had been alerted to the problem by a Muslim GP and had
contacted all GPs in Glasgow asking them to warn Muslim parents and
offer the option of using the alternative MMR vaccine made by
Priorix.
Forbidden food
Strict Muslims are only allowed to eat foods not expressly forbidden
in the Koran and animals slaughtered "in the name of Allah" are
considered halal, or lawful, to eat.
The Koran says only animals which chew the cud and have cloven hooves
can be eaten, and as pigs do not chew the cud they are considered
haram, or forbidden.
Although Jews also consider pork to be unclean, kosher law only
covers animal products which are eaten.

How to Lower our Gaze |

Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem
How to Lower our Gaze
By Sabeel Ahmed
"If I were not a Muslim, I would have contacted AIDS!" proclaimed my friend. "The ayahs in Surah Nur about lowering our gazes doesn't affect me anymore", expressed another youth, talking about the intense temptations felt by today's youth. Difficulty in lowering the gaze by both the young and old is readily perceived on the street, weddings, parties and even in the Masjids.
What has gone wrong with our Ummah? Us Muslims, called by Allah, our Creator, as the best Ummah, Model Community, custodians of Truth and the Upholders of Morality behaving in this way? Why are we adopting the attitudes and routes of the Kuffar? How can we rectify ourselves?
What follows are a series of practical, though graphic advice which can work for us and set us free from Satan's stronghold, insha Allah.
Prophet Muhammad, Sallallhu alayhi wa sallam, by way of warning and as a reminder said: "I have not left a fitnah (trial, calamity or cause for calamity) after me more than (the fitnah) with women for men" (Bukhari and Muslim). Also was related by our Prophet : "The world is sweet and verdant, and Allah having put you in it in your turn watches how you act; so fear the world and fear women, for the first trial of the Bani israel had to do with women" (Muslim)
Being optimistic, a ray of hope was also wisely provided during Prophet's Last Sermon on way to avoid the above pitfall: "If the Ummah hold on to the Quran and the Sunnah, it will not go astray".
When Allah created us humans will all the desires and urges, He also revealed to us sufficient and complete guidance to contain them through proper channels. All we need to do is seek this guidance, contemplate on it and implement it. "This day I have perfected you deen for you, completed my favors upon you and chosen Islam as your deen" (5:3)
Realize the fact that the great Sahabas were humans beings too. Biologically they were no different from us, they too had desires and temptations of the human species, and yet they controlled them in the best of ways. We can too, insha Allah. To posses sensual passions is Human, to control them is Muslim.
When confronted with a luring situation, like passing by a non-mahram on the street, office, or a school, Satan is constantly tempting us to glare at her with evil thoughts. Satan is probably excitingly saying with a big smile `Yes', `Yes', `Yes', when we steer into the bait he is setting. During these situations immediately and consciously realize that when we give a second or following glances, we are obeying Satan. "O you who believe, follow not the footsteps of the devil..." (24:21). By immediately averting our gazes and disobeying Satan, we are giving him a one two punch in the face which leaves him frustrated, accursed and defeated.
Satan rebelled and was expelled by Allah, so lets all rebel against Satan and expel him from our hearts. Satan intents to fight a war against the believers, so lets gather our forces behind Quran and Sunnah and defeat him.
Remember that even if no human eye is watching us, the ever watchful Allah is constantly monitoring the innermost regions of our heart. Our eyes, limbs, tongue and private parts will all be witnesses for or against us on the Day of Judgement and not an atoms worth of our deeds will remain unexamined.
Psychologically our minds are conditioned to associate our thoughts of stealing clothes from a store to being in handcuffs and hauled into a police van. Likewise, we should condition our minds to bring the verses of Surah Nur in front of our eyes during any tempting situation and imagine that during that particular instance Allah (SWT) is speaking to us directly: "Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty, that will make for greater purity for them...Say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty...O you believers! Turn you all together towards Allah that you may attain success" (24:30,31). What a beautiful guidance and what a sublime reward for implementing it.
With practice, the above associations and the remembrance of Allah during tempting situations will prevent us from getting stuck by devilish arrows. Successful controlling our gazed also depends upon our avoidance of sinful situations. Al Islamic idiom (Usul Al-Fiqh) says: "Anything that leads to haraam is haaram in itself". Therefore cutting any unlawful situation in their bud is what we should strive for. Performance of a pious deed is rewarded and avoidance of a sinful deed is also rewarded, Al-Hamdulillah.
One of the biggest culprits which encourage us to disobey the ayahs in Surah Nur, are the movies. In the name of entertainment, to please our peers and children and as an excuse to do something together as a family, we astonishingly allow the development of un-Islamic scenes and dialogues in front of our eyes. Can we ever imagine (Na'udubillah) any Sahaba renting the latest hit from Blockbuster videos, or listening to music with luring lyrics at high volume?
Likewise, we watch news on TV and stare at the anchorwomen, female gymnasts, and female swimmers who are scantly dressed. Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, was once approached by a women with a proposal for marriage. He took a single glance at her and turned his face way. Jabir bin Abdullah reported: "I asked Allah's messenger about the sudden glance on the face of a non-Mahram. He commanded me that I should turn away my eyes" (Muslim). Thus we are not suppose to stare at the faces of non-Mahrams of opposite gender, be they our fellow students, elders, saleswomen or the one of TV.
Pious ladies of the Prophet's household were even ordered to do purdah in front of a Blind Sahaba. Upon the curious question as to why purdah when the blind Sahaba can't see them, Prophet wisely replies: "But you could see him" (Ahmed, Trimidhi, Abu Dawood)
Each one of us may have become culprit of not obey the ayahs in Surah Nur. It is not too late to realize these short comings and work at rectifying ourselves. Above all, we should always ask forgiveness of Allah (SWT). Indeed blessed are those Muslims who are able to check their gazes, thus conserving their precious time and energy, and working in the cause of Allah to reclaim our positions as the superpowers of the world.
Let's contemplate on the above humble advises and constantly make the following supplication: "O Allah help us in controlling our sensual desires until we get married, and after our marriage, let our desires be only towards our spouses...ameen"

Salaamu Alaikum,
Here is a forward from another group:
It's going to be a rare sight so remember - don't miss the opportunity
to view 2 moons in the sky -> 27 AUGUST 2003.
Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular!
This month (July) and next month(August) the Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its
orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear
25.11 arc seconds wide.
At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August, Mars will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at
about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history. So mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grows progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month
