The foremost essential which a people must determine and define in


law-making is the concept of life. As is the concept of life of a


people so will be its law. Broadly speaking, two concepts of life,


which have come down to us through history, are prevalent today, and


have a direct bearing on the point under discussion.


One concept sees man only as a physical body, endowed somehow with


consciousness, living according to certain chemico-physico-biological


laws and then dying under the operation of these very laws. With his


physical death man, like other animals, ceases to exist. This concept


is known as the materialistic concept of life. Laws or rules of


conduct framed under this concept of life are based on expediency and


admit of no permanent or unchangeable values. Changes, abrogation's,


or amendments in the laws are also governed exclusively by expediency.


Governmental machinery set up by people subscribing to the


materialistic concept of life is called the -Secular- form of


government, whether its pattern is democratic or dictatorial.


There is another concept of life which is propounded by the Holy


Quran. Man, according to the Quranic concept, is a combination of a


physical body, which is changing, changeable and liable to death, and


a Personality which does not change, but develops and is capable of


self-integration and becoming immortal. The aim of life, according to


the Holy Quran, is the development of Personality. Human Personality


is not static but is potentially capable of developing and expanding.


Its development can, however, take place only in a social order called


the Islamic State. The Islamic State provides the ways and means for


the proper development and progress both of Body and Personality.


Since man is according to this concept of life, an integrated


composition of permanence and change, laws governing the social order


wherein his development takes place, should also be a combination of


permanence and change. This point has been elaborated beautifully by


Iqbal in his sixth lecture in the series on the Reconstruction of


Religious Thought in Islam. He says:


The ultimate spiritual basis of all life, as conceived by Islam, is


eternal and reveals itself in variety and change. A society based on


such a conception of Reality must reconcile, in its life, the


categories of permanence and change. It must possess eternal


principles to regulate its collective life; for the eternal gives us a


foothold in the world of perpetual change. But eternal principles when


they are understood to exclude all possibilities of change, which


according to the Quran is one of the greatest signs of God, tend to


immobilise what is essentially mobile in its nature.

During my second year at New York University, I met a young girl also from a Jewish home who had decided to embrace Islam. As passionately interested in the Arabs as I was, she introduced me to many of her Arab and Muslim friends in New York. She and I attended the same class taught by a Jewish rabbi which was entitled "Judaism in Islam." The rabbi tried to prove to his students under the guise of "comparative religion" that everything good in Islam was borrowed directly from the Old Testament, the Talmud and the Midrash. Our text book (Judaism In Islam, Abraham I. Katsh, Washington Square Press, New York, 1954) written by this same rabbi set down the second and third Surahs of the Qur’an verse by verse, tracing their origins from alleged Jewish sources. Interspersed with this was a liberal sprinkling of Zionist propaganda in many films and colored slides glorifying the Jewish state. Ironically enough, instead of convincing me of the superiority of Judaism over Islam, this course converted me to the opposite view. Despite the fact that in the Old Testament, there are some universal concepts of God and high moral ideals as preached by the Prophets, Judaism has always retained its tribal, nationalistic character. Despite some noble idealism, the Jewish scripture is like a Jewish history book and their God a tribal god. The narrow-minded parochialism has found its modern expression (although in a thoroughly secular form) in Zionism. The Premier of Israel, David Ben-Gurion believes in no personal, super-natural God, never attends Synagogue, and observes no Jewish laws, customs or rituals yet he is considered, even by the most pious and orthodox of Jews, to be one of the greatest Jews of our times. Most Jewish leaders consider God as some super real-estate agent who parcels out land for their exclusive benefit! Zionism has made the worst aspects of modern Western materialistic nationalism its very own. Only such a philosophy of expediency and opportunism could justify in their minds such a ruthless campaign to exile the majority of Arabs and trample on the pitiful minority who remained in "Israel" and then style themselves as the bearers of "progress" and "enlightenment" to a "benighted" Arab world! Although "Israel's" scientific and technological development is superior, this material advancement combined with the most reactionary tribal, "chosen people" morality, I believe is a major threat to the peace of the world. I once heard Golda Meir address the United Nations General Assembly; "I oppose anybody who disputes Israel's right to security by retaining all Arab territories occupied by conquest. The only ethics that concerns us is the survival of Jewish people in the Jewish State!" (Never mind, Mrs. Golda Meir, about the survival, much less the well-being of any other people!)


Then too, I soon discovered that Jewish scholars nursed even more enmity towards the Prophet Muhammad than the Christians. The hypocrisy of reformed Judaism was equally unacceptable. It is not permissible for you to buy anything for your father which is haraam to use, whether it is tobacco, opium, hashish, alcohol or whatever, even if he tells you to do that. It was reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience of the Creator” and, “Obedience is only with regard to things which are right and good (ma’roof).” You have to advise him and apologize to him politely for not buying them for him.

I don't really believe that there are many young people who can say no to what their father says, some fathers will take it as being disrespectful and become angry and we are not supposed to anger our parents. I know someone who is in this situation, what can there be done? Let me also include that the father has a short temper and he is quite old and often sick. He can hardly move well enough to stand for long. At such old age anger can lead to a lot of things, strokes, heart-attacks.


I just want to make clear that I agree with the sheikhs fatwa, but I don't know what can be done in this situation. I thought to send an email to islam q&a but I wasn't sure.

Of course,as good Muslims we appreciate His kindness, but let us also remind ourselves of -giving-.This is a fundamental obligation of our personal and communal lives.The mighty English Oxford Dictionary's definition of the word charity embraces,Giving voluntarily to those in need;an organisation for helping those in need; tolerance;and love of one's fellow human beings.And a famous poet's poignant comment on the same subject reads:There are those who have little to give and give it all.These are the believers in life and it's bounty.And their


coffer is never empty.Good words, but nothing new!


The Holy Quran emphasis on -giving- is obvious and with considerable


clarity,it presents three inter-related precepts which form the


essential basis of this obligation.Firstly, we accept the premise that


we have to face the consequences,both here and in the hereafter,of


whatever we do on earth.The -do- is expansive,including aspects such as


our deeds,thoughts, feelings, behaviour and dealings with


fellow-beings.Secondly,we have to strive for the comprehensive


development of ourselves as individuals,and in the process aim for the


elimination of imbalances in our communities.Integrate these two vital


attributes of Quranic teaching;and we begin to comprehend the third and


most difficult precept,that of -anfaq- Anfaq in effect constitutes the


pinnacle of -giving-.It consolidates the containment of societal


negatives such as poverty,hunger,injustice,malice,abuse,disrespect,


waste,greed and the deprivation of the human rights.Ultimately,it is


the perfect socio-political environment in which hoarding becomes


unnecessary and where all resources are equitably available for


everyone's benefit.The word itself derives from the old Arabic


expression for an open-ended tunnel,suggesting that as much as possible


should flow through and become accessible to those in need.


No,we are not aspiring to egalitarianism, for the Holy Quran does


recognise that a healthy community must comprise a mutually beneficial


mix of people with different abilities, roles,responsibilities,


personalities and needs. However, they all have the basic necessities


of food,shelter,health,education and personal freedoms,the satisfaction


of which must be the central responsibility of any balanced system of


existence.


This then,leads us to the elegantly simple game of -giving-.Playable


individually or in teams,on a limitless playing field,it requires no


spectators.While it is easy to understand,the rules are tough and like


all great games,the glory is in the participation;the pleasure in the


commitment.The rewards,which Allah Almighty promises can be aplenty,are


of course welcome icing on the cake.Notably though the procedure never


stops,for the resources given by Allah Almighty are meant for all


humanity;and they have to remain in continuous circulation.The


objective too is unambiguous.Recognise that people's genuine needs


differ,but give as much as you can from what remains after satisfying


your personal needs.The needy have a right to expect assistance and


within that fundamental premise,the Quran proffers many explanatory


notes.


Firstly,give because you believe in God and his cause.Give


wholeheartedly with unselfish compassion, but do so from that which has


been earned honourably.In giving more or less;openly or secretly;be


genuine,for when we help from what we ourselves have rejected,our


hypocrisy is inexcusable.Of course,we must give sensibly.Emotions can


lead to excesses and irrationality, which can be detrimental to both


the giver and the receiver.Furthermore,we are rightly warned to be


humble.Constant reminders of the kind deeds one performs can be


painfully embarrassing for all concerned.Expect no appreciation from


the assisted and certainly avoid nurturing a sense of


superiority.Whereas we have to be vary of professional scroungers,there


is understandable emphasis on first assisting


parents,children,relatives as well as the very young and elderly who


cannot earn for themselves.Give freely as you please,but also


contribute to a system whereby the funds are judiciously administered


through a properly organised effort.


Finally and no less importantly,do not neglect the charity in the


-giving- of our persons.Practice social etiquette beseeches the Holy


Quran.Be ever conscious of the likes and dislikes of those around


you;respect their privacy;offer moral support;use kind and comforting


words;speak softly;show tolerance and always maintain exemplary


decorum.So plainly speaking,this protocol of -giving- is not easy.As


that famous poet also said: It is when you give of yourself that you


truly give.How right - and how nice!

Given the fact that there has never been in the history of the Torah (Old Testament) the religion of God to be named after a Prophet (i.e. Adaminity, Abrahamity, Mosanity, etc.), I hope to explain that Jesus did not preach the religion of Christianity, but a religion that gives all Praise and Worship to The One God.


One of the questions Christians should ask; where did the word Christianity come from and was the word ever mentioned to Jesus? Well, I did not find the word Christianity in the Bible, not even in a Bible dictionary. Specifically, I did not find in the Bible where Jesus called himself a Christian.


The word Christian was first mentioned by a pagan to describe those who followed Jesus. It is mentioned one of three times in the New Testament by a pagan and Jew in Antioch about 43 AD, (Acts 11:26, Acts 26:28 and 1 Peter 4:16) long after Jesus left this earth. To accept the words of pagans as having any value or association with divinity, Jesus or God is contrary to the teachings of all Prophets.


Jesus prophesied that people would worship him uselessly and believe in doctrines made by men (Matthew 15:9).


"But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." This verse, Matthew 15:9, is further supported by these words of the Quran:


"And (remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): "O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say unto men: "Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?" He will say: "Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner-self though I do not know what is in Yours, truly, You, only You, are the All-Knower o fall that is hidden and unseen.


Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allah) did command me to say: ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were a Witness to all things. (This is a great admonition and warning to the Christians of the whole world)." (Al-Ma’idah 5:116-117)


I found that Biblical verses like John 5:30, John 12:49, John 14:28, Isaiah 42:8 and Acts 2:22 support the above mentioned verses of the Quran.


Finally, I should mention one small point of observation. If Christians are Christ-like, why are they not greeting each other with the words; Peace be with you (Salamu Alaikum), as Jesus did in Luke 24:36. As you may be aware, the greeting from one Muslim to another Muslim is Assalamu Alaikum; a Christ-like saying.

Does anyone know where I can get a phone card that can be used to make calls FROM Iraq TO the U.S.? I can only find them for the other way around. Also, any idea of what the rates would be?

The development of Western materialism from its inception in ancient Greece, through the "Renaissance" to its culmination in the form of ideologies like Communism, and Capitalism. The evils we are witnessing today are theological result of a trend lasting more than five hundred years. All the major leaders of Western thought were ardent materialists; in fact, the whole theme of modern Western civilization was its revolt against the Church and ultimately all religious and spiritual values. Thus, materialism is part of the very essence of the Atheist West. The nationalist leaders of the Middle East, Asia and Africa, have been simultaneously taught to despise their native heritage and imbued with the philosophies of materialism. Filled with hatred and resentment against their former Western masters, they are merely flinging the garbage right back into their faces!


A gullible Muslim might like to rejoice in the efforts of these secularist elites making to promote the cause of Islam in the Muslim world. But it is clear beyond doubt that they’re not so much interested in furthering the cause of Muslims or of the Faith than merely using it as a slogan instrumental in the extension of his own personal glorification and prestige. Some Muslims under the Western propaganda believe that Islam must submit to the criteria of contemporary philosophies and any Islamic principle or practice that conflicts with modern Western culture must be discarded. Such thinking is praised as "liberal", and "forward-looking," and "progressive" while those who think as we do are branded as "reactionaries" and "fanatics" who refuse to face the realities of the day.

While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a lady on a bench near a playground. "That's my son over there," she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.


"He's a fine looking boy," the lady said. "That's my son on the swing in the blue sweater." Then, looking at her watch, she called to his son. "What do you say we go, Sameer?"


Smaeer pleaded, "Just five more minutes, Mummy. Please? Just five more minutes." The lady nodded and Sameer continued to swing to his heart's content.


Minutes passed and the mother stood and called again to her son. "Time to go now?" Again Sameer pleaded, "Five more minutes, Mum. Just five more minutes." The lady smiled and said, "O.K."


"My, you certainly are a patient mother," the woman responded.


The lady smiled and then said, "My older son Haitham was killed in a road accident last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent as much time with Haitham as I could have, and now I 'd give anything for just five more minutes with him. I've vowed not to make the same mistake with Sameer. He thinks he has five more minutes to swing. The truth is, I get five more minutes to watch him play."
