Women's Community In Philadelphia?
#1

Hello. I am new to this board. I have been reading a lot about Islam and feel that this religion is in line with my own beliefs. I am a non-practicing Catholic, Christian raised, but no longer share their basic common beliefs. I have been looking for a community to share my faith with in the Philadelphia area. Does anyone know of where I can go to do this?

Mosques are quite different than churches. It was easier to explore a Christian faith by walking into a church and sitting anonymously in any pew to hear that days sermon/homily, etc. Things are very different in Islam. I'm intimidated to pray in at Mosque without having a woman to go along with, at least the for the first time.

I'd also like to find a community where I can learn more about Islam and feel part of- like family.

Any suggestions?

Salam and welcome Latifa,

I wish you the best in exploring and finding Islam out, you are most welcome to stay here and enjoy. There are many interesting issues that may benefit you.

I found a web site at http://www.upenn.edu/ccp/Ford/WPhila_Muslims.html it is article about Muslims in Philadelphia and mosques, schools, shops and restaurants were to find halal (allowed) food and so on.

It says there are 25 mosques in the Philadelphia area, here is some of them mentioned

Mosques:

5. Muslims of America mosque - 52nd and Hazel streets (barber shop inside)

6. Masjid Jam'ia - 4328 Walnut streets (43rd and Walnut streets)

7. Association of Islamic Charitable Projects - 4431 Walnut Street (45th and Walnut streets)

8. Masjid Mujahedeen - 60th street around Osage/Hazel streets (barbershop and informal bookstore inside)

I think it would be best if you want to have contact with Muslims women is to go to a mosque or if there is an Islamic centre. I am sure they will be more than willing to help you out. There might be lessons held in the mosque for example that you can join or there may be women meeting regulary to teach Islam. So please try to find out where the nearest mosque is for you, and then contact them.

Will see more of you here on the forum insha'Allah.
