What does Salam mean?

Alhamdulelah = Praise be to Allah.

Bismillah = In the Name of Allah.

Salam = Peace. which is the root word for Islam which means submission to the will of Almighty God.

Salam

Salam

Wael.

Sorry Wael, just to correct this common mistake here:

The word Islam in arabic is another verb form of Tasleem, yosalem which all mean to deliver, give or submit.

So to clearly explain what Islam is it is an exaggerating form of the verb to deliver, sumbit or give in.

In other words the word Islam is the act of Islam which is the act of to submit or surrender to Allah.

To sumbit yourself and surrrender yourself to Allah and thus to what Allah Commands or ordains. To stricly follow Allah's commands.

As for the meaning of salam, it means peace. In Quran, we are commanded to use the form of greeting as AS salam Alykom.

We are even commanded to greet non Muslims as Salamu a`la man itab`lhoda.

Which translates as peace to those who followed guidance.

This makes the answer to your question regarding the meaning of salam: peace and form of greeting.

Assalam is also one of Allah's Attributes.

Hope this covered your points.

Actually, Curious I dont want to get into a long Arabic lesson, but this linguist mistake is quite common and very serious. As in some cases it gives an impression to non Muslims that we are shy to reveal that part of Islam as a system of life does contain a command for Qital which is fighting.

This isssue is clearly explained on another thread.

as salam alykom

Just to confirm the correction of this common mistake, and I m concerned to do so because there are other guests and silent members who may read here.

Wael seems that living abroad for a long time made your Arabic rusty... :)

Well I will try Insh a Allah to be as simple as possible, since this is an Arabic session.

Now to settle the confusion:

Both words Islam and Salam share the same root (seen, lam and meem). In Arabic when we talk about the root, we only put the letters together without (haraka=vowles).

However, this does not mean that salam is the root of Islam but rather both words share the same root.

Talking about Masdar= can be best translated as origin.

salam as a word is itself a masdar from which the verb Salema is dervied

Whereas: Islam is a masdar to the verb aslama

Now I think the picture is more clear.

Language wise the two words has not association non whatsoever.

With all due respect to any scholar who probagate for this notion.

we dont need to decorate Islam and call it a derivative of salam in order to invite people.

Matter of fact, Islam is a gift an invalubale one, that one must strive to gain and maintain.
