Islam And Uyghur Nationalism In A Global Era"
#1

The demise of the Soviet Union and emergence of new independent states

Central Asia stimulated the growth of Uyghur Nationalism in predominantly

Muslim East Turkistan, also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region of

China.

Anti-Chinese actions during the last decade culminated in a series of

sanguinary uprisings making Uyghur separatism one of the most serious

internal problems of China. Islamic religious identity of the Uyghurs also

complicates the ethnic conflict in this part of the world. The lecture will

look at two dimensions of the Uyghur identity in a Global Era, nationalism

and Islam, and the role of Islam in shaping Uyghur Ethno-Nationalism.
