Salman Rushdie, Satanic Verses....
#11

Salaam Alaikum!

If you like insolent, scurrilous literature, then the book was for you. There is nothing inseparable in Salman Rushdie's book than there is in Vladimir Nobakov's books. The popularity behind the book was obviously erected from the protests and riots. Beyond that there's nothing uniquely prodigious about Rushdie than there is of the Medieval Baghdadi-- Jewish Philosopher Ibn Kumurna (hence Ibn kumuna—wink!).

Not to be a about it, but as an admirer of ethical theory, I noticed some mendacious statements by Rushdie (after the affair of course) which leave me confused on why he had written the book in the first place (e.g. moral relativism, confusion of hadith stories, chronology and so on).

has any one read this book:

PROPHET OF DOOM: ISLAM'S TERRORIST DOGMA IN MUHAMMAD'S OWN WORDS.

i cant believe he can say all those things and get away with it  its books like this that make people hate islam. Astagfiruallah they should ban books like this  . but all this dont matter because afterall of this islam is stil the fastest growing religion [Image: wink.gif] here is an editorial review that is on amazon :

as salam alykom

Unity U may simply refer to the content of the book, but we can not post a clear slander on the Messenger and leave it here. Much difference when someone is questioning Islam with respect, and another who is slandering the Messenge. what use is it to post the content, none. we only allow questions to be posted with respect for Muslims to respond.

Jazakum Allah khairan for observing this rule in the future.

What I read makes my blood boil and see red. It is absolutely pathetic when people resort to all out slander. My only calm comes from the fact that Allah Sees and Hears the lies that this man perpetuates against His prophet and His deen. This is evidence again of one who already has an opinion formed and then peruses the books for anything that supports their argument. This can be done with almost anywhere. "Oh, Jesus condoned violence because he attacked those merchants in the temple." Come on. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

Maybe if he did more :learn: instead of :computera , he would be more :smilingfl .

May Allah Guide this man and those who read his lies desire to seek out the truth.

As salam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu

Their hatred has already become apparent by (what they say with) their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is even much worse.

Aal Imran”: 3;118

Truly, the religion with Allâh is Islâm. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, then surely, Allâh is Swift in calling to account.

Aal Imran”: 3;19

They are like those who kindled a fire, but as soon as it lit up all around them, God took away their light leaving them in darkness, where they could not see. Deaf, dumb and blind, they shall never return to the right path. Or like those who, beneath a dark storm-cloud charged with thunder and lightning, thrust their fingers in their ears at the sound of every thunder-clap for fear of death (God thus encompasses the deniers). The lightning almost takes away their sight: whenever it flashes upon them they walk on, but, as soon as it darkens, they stand still. Indeed, if God pleased, He could take away their sight and hearing: He has power over all things.

This is a belated response to an old thread, but:

I read Satanic Verses some years ago and in fact wrote an extensive paper on Rushdie and and his writing based on that and a few other of his books that I have read.

Rushdie is a good writer; he uses language well and crafts his sentences, his stories, and his characters with skill. However, he is also a pretentious monkey. I say this not simply based on the Satanic Verses, but on other things that he has written, not all having to do with Islam. In one, an anthology that he edited of the best 20th century fiction of the Indian Subcontinent, he only includes stories written in English and Urdu. Not surprisingly, he speaks both these languages. He explains that the other languages of India are unimportant and not part of "world dialogue," and therefore that nothing written in those tongues is worth reading or mentioning, or at least not of the same "caliber" that the English pieces are.

Much of this same snyde, condescending tone permeates Satanic Verses. He even has a character -- Salman the Persian -- who goes so far as to say that he takes grains of truth and he adds lies to them, and finds that he can pervert facts this way and make people believe falsehoods. This is basically what Rushdie himself does throughout the Satanic Verses. A couple of other things: there is a brothel in Mecca where the prostitutes bear the names of the Prophet's wives, he names the brothel Hijab, which is of course ironic because the concept of hijab represents codes of decency. He further compares trips to the brothel with pilgrimages to the Kaaba, and the only two decent Muslims in the book are named Sufyan and Hinda. Sufyan was one of the merchant kings of Mecca who tried to destroy the Muslims, and Hind was his wife, who had one of the Prophet's uncles murdered and ate his liver. So he pretty much spends the whole book disparaging Islam and trying to make profane all of Islam's sacred symbols. Nauzobillah.

I don't think this warrants a death sentence, but the man really is an ass.

Anyway, those are some of my thoughts. I can go on about this at some length, but I hope that gives you some answer to your question.

peace
