<b>Eating, Drinking and Entertaining </b> HOW TO START EATING?

عن عُمَرَ ابْنَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ يَقُولُ كُنْتُ غُلَامًا فِي حَجْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَكَانَتْ يَدِي تَطِيشُ فِي الصَّحْفَةِ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا غُلَامُ سَمِّ اللَّهَ وَكُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ فَمَا زَالَتْ تِلْكَ طِعْمَتِي بَعْدُ

Umar bin Abu Salmah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing of Allah be on him) my hand was moving fastly in the bowl, taking from every side. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said to me: "<b>Say Bismillah (i.e. I start with the name of Allah), eat with your right hand and eat from the side nearest to you." -Agreed upon</b>


عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِي اللَّه عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فَإِنْ فنَسِيَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فِي أَوَّلِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ

It is reported by Ayesha that the Messenger of Allah (peace and (may Allah be pleased with her) blessings of Allah be on him but forgets to remember Allah over his ) said: <b>"When any one of you eats food, let him sayend.'" : 'In the name of Allah from the beginning to the end' -Tirmizi and Abu Daud</b>


عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِيَمِينِهِ وَإِذَا شَرِبَ فَلْيَشْرَبْ بِيَمِينِهِ

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah on him) said: <b>"When any one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand." - Muslim</b>


عَنْ بْنُ عُمَرُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَأْكُلَنَّ أَحَدٌكُمْ بِشِمَالِهِ وَلَا يَشْرَبَنَّ بِهَا فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ وَيَشْرَبُ بِهَا

It is stated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing of Allah on him) said:, <b>"None of you shall ever take food with his left hand, nor drink with it, because the devil eats and drinks with his left hand." - Muslim</b>
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيَرْضَى عَنِ الْعَبْدِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الْأَكْلَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا أَوْ يَشْرَبَ الشَّرْبَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings be on him) said: <b>"Verily Allah is certainly pleased with a man who takes food and then praise Allah for it or takes drink and praises Allah for the same." - Muslim</b>


أَبَا جُحَيْفَةَ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا آكُلُ مُتَّكِئًا

It is stated by Abu Huzaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"I don't eat reclining." - Bukhari </b>


<b>ON FINSHING THE MEALS</b>

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَة قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الطَّاعِمُ الشَّاكِرُ كَالصَّائِمِ الصَّابِرِ

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"The thankful eater is like the person fasting patiently." - Tirmizi, Ibn Majah and Darimi</b>


عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ طَعَامِهِ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

It is reported by Abu Saeed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be on him) finished his meals, he used to say: <b>"All praise is for the Lord Who have us to eat and to drink and made us Muslims." - Tirmizi, Abu Daud and Ibn Majah</b>


عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ مُعَاذِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَكَلَ طَعَامًا فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

Sahl bin Muaz bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"Whoever eats food and then says, 'all praise be to Allah who gave me the food to eat and made it accessible to me without any maneuvering or skill from my side-all his preceding sins are pardoned." - Tirmizi</b>


THE DRINKING MANNERS

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَشْرَبُوا وَاحِدًا كَشُرْبِ الْبَعِيرِ وَلَكِنِ اشْرَبُوا مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ وَسَمُّوا إِذَا أَنْتُمْ شَرِبْتُمْ وَاحْمَدُوا إِذَا أَنْتُمْ رَفَعْتُمْ

It is reported by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"Don't drink in one breath like the camel's drinking, but drink with two or three (pauses). Utter 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah), when you start drinking and 'Alhamdolillah'(all praise for Allah) when you finish." -Tirmizi</b>


عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَنَفَّسُ فِي الشَّرَابِ ثَلَاثًا

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the <b>Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him), used to take three breaths for one drink. -Agreed upon</b>


عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ النَّفْخِ فِي الشُّرْبِ

Abu Saeed al-Khu(may Allah be pleased with him) stated that <b>the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prohibited giving breath in the drink. -Tirmizi and Darimi</b>


<b>HOSPITALITY AND ENTERTAINMENT</b>

عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كُلُوا جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا فَإِنَّ الْبَرَكَةَ مَعَ الْجَمَاعَةِ

Umar Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"Ear together and not separately, because blessing is with the company." -Ibn Majah</b>


عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ من كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ

Abu Hurairah reported that the Holy Prophet, (peace and blessings of Allah on him), said: <b>"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guests." -Agreed upon</b>


عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ الرَّجُلُ مَعَ ضَيْفِهِ إِلَى بَابِ الدَّارِ

Abu Hurairah stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"It is the Sunnah (Prophet's way of life) that a man should accompany his guest up to the door of his house." -Ibn Majah and Baihaqi</b>

<b>Pleasures of Wishing and Greeting </b>

<b>GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS</b>

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ بَيْنَكُمْ

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: <b>"Give currency to salutation amongst yourself." </b> -Muslim

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِي اللَّه عَنْهمَا أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَيُّ الْإِسْلَامِ خَيْرٌ قَالَ تُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ وَتَقْرَأُ السَّلَامَ عَلَى مَنْ عَرَفْتَ وَمَنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ

Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) "<b>What is the best (deed) in Islam?" He said: "Your feeding (the poor) and offering salutation to whom you know and whom you do not know." -Agreed upon</b>

عن قتادة قال قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخلتم بيتا فسلموا على أهله وإذا خرجتم فأودعوا أهله بسلام

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "<b>My dear son! Salute when you enter your home. This shall yield blessings for you and for your family folks." -Tirmizi</b>

Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: <b>"When you enter a house salute its inmates and when you leave then depart with salutations." -Baihaqi</b>

عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ السَّلَامُ قَبْلَ الْكَلَامِ

Jaber (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said<b>: "Greetings before speaking." -Tirmizi</b>

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى عن ابي هُرَيْر اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يُسَلِّمُ الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى الْكَبِيرِ وَالْمَارُّ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ وَالْقَلِيلُ عَلَى الْكَثِيرِ

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: <b>"The younger should salute the older, the walking to the sitting and the smaller group to the larger group." -Agreed upon</b>

عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِاللَّهِ مَنْ بَدَأَهُمْ بِالسَّلَامِ

Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: <b>"He who greets first is nearest to Allah." - Ahmad, Tirmizi and Abu Daud. </b>

عن عبد الله عن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قال البادئ بالسلام برئ من الكبر

Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: <b>"The initiator in salutation is free from vanity." -Bailhaqi</b>

عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَشْرٌ ثُمَّ جَاءَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِشْرُونَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلَاثُونَ

Imaran bin Husian (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that <b>a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "Peace be upon you." The Prophet returned the greetings. Then he sat down. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Ten" (i.e. you have earned ten credits of virtue). Then another person came in and said: "peace and mercy of Allah be on you." The Prophet wished him back. He took his seat. The Prophet then said: "Twenty". Thereafter another man came in and said: "peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be on you." The Prophet returned the salutations. He sat down. Then the Prophet said: "Thirty" - Tirmizi and Abu Duad</b>

HANDSHAKE

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الرَّجُلُ مِنَّا يَلْقَى أَخَاهُ أَوْ صَدِيقَهُ أَيَنْحَنِي لَهُ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَفَيَلْتَزِمُهُ وَيُقَبِّلُهُ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَفَيَأْخُذُ بِيَدِهِ وَيُصَافِحُهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that <b>a man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! when some one from amongst us meets his brother or friend should he bow his head before him?" He replied, "No". He asked, "should he embrace him or kiss him?" "No." replied he. He asked, "should he hold his hand and have an handshake?" He replied "Yes". - Tirmizi </b>

عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْخُرَاسَانِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَصَافَحُوا يَذْهَبِ الْغِلُّ

Ata al-Khurasani (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Apostle of Allah, (peace be upon him), said: <b>"Handshake with each other. It vanishes malice" -Malik </b>

عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ فَيَتَصَافَحَانِ إِلَّا غُفِرَ لَهُمَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَفْتَرقا

Bara bin Azib states that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: <b>"All such two Muslims who shake hands on meeting are forgiven before they part away." -Ahmad, Tirmizi and Ibn Majah</b>

عن البراء بن عازب قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم المسلمان اذا تصافحا لم يبق بينهما ذنب الا سقط

Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that he Messenger of Allah, (peace be upon him). said: <b>"When two Muslims shake hands with each other no sin remains between them which is not pardoned." -Baihaqi</b>

عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِي اللَّه عَنْهم أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ

وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ وَتَمَامُ تَحِيَّاتِكُمْ بَيْنَكُمُ الْمُصَافَحَةُ

Abu Omamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: <b>"The perfect way of your mutual greetingis handshaking." -Ahmad and Tirmizi</b>

<b>HEALTHFUL SMILING</b>

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ جَزْءٍ قَالَ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَكْثَرَ تَبَسُّمًا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Abdullah bin Harith bin Jazaa (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: <b>"I never saw anyone smiling more than the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." -Tirmizi</b>

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِي اللَّه عَنْهَا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُسْتَجْمِعًا قَطُّ ضَاحِكًا حَتَّى أَرَى مِنْهُ لَهَوَاتِهِ إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَتَبَسَّمُ

Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: <b>"I have not seen the Prophet, (peace be upon him), bursting into such a laughter that I could notice his palate. He rather used to smile." -Bukhari</b>

<b>IMPORTANCE OF SOUND CHARACTER</b>

عن أنس وعن عبد الله رضي الله عنهما قالا قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الخلق عيال الله فأحب الخلق إلى الله من أحسن إلى عياله

It is reported by Anas and Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: <b>"People are Allah's family. Therefore, the dearest to Allah is the person who is kind to his family. -Baihaqi</b>


عن رجل من مزينة قال قالوا يا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ما خير ما أعطي الإنسان قال الخلق الحسن

It is reported by a man from the Muzaina tribe that people asked, <b>"O Messenger of Allah! What is the best of what man has been given? He replied: "Good conduct". -Baihaqi</b>

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنْ أَخْيَرِكُمْ أَحْسَنَكُمْ خُلُقًا

Abdullah Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"Certainly the best of you are those who have excellent morals." -Agreed upon</b>

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْمَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِيمَانًا أَحْسَنُهُمْ خُلُقًا *

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said<b>:" The best amongst the Believers in faith are the best among them in character. -Abu Daud and Darimi</b>

عن عبد الله بن عمرو قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنْ أَحَبِّكُمْ إِلَيَّ أَحْسَنَكُمْ خُلُقاُ

Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said<b>:" The dearest to me among you is the best of you in conduct." -Bukhari</b>


عن أبي ثعلبة الخشني أن رسو الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال إن أحبكم إلي وأقربكم مني يوم القيامة أحاسنكم أخلاقا

Abu Thaalbah al-Khushini (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: <b>" The dearest and the nearest to me among you on the Resurrection day shall be the best in morals." -Baihaqi</b>

<b>GOOD WILL AND OPEN MIND</b>

عن عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِي اللَّه عَنْه قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ

It is reported by Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) may Allah be pleased with him that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: <b>"Surely all actions depend upon the intentions. -Agreed upon</b>


عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah on him) said: <b>"Richness is the richness of the self (i.e. self contentment)." </b>

عن أَبَي هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَى صُوَرِكُم وأموالكم وَلَكِنْ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى قُلُوبِكُمْ وأعمالكم

It is narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah) be on him said: <b>"Surely Allah does not consider your figures and wealth. He rather values your hearts and acts." -Muslim</b>

<b>SWEET WORDS AND SWEET ACTS</b>

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الْبَيَانِ َسِحْرٌ

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said<b>: "Surely some speech is magic." (i.e. it is very effective). -Bukhari</b>


عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَرْتُ لَيْلَةَ أُسْرِيَ بِي عَلَى قَوْمٍ تُقْرَضُ شِفَاهُهُمْ بِمَقَارِيضَ مِنْ نَارٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ قَالُوا خُطَبَاءُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا كَانُوا يَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْبِرِّ وَيَنْسَوْنَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَتْلُونَ الْكِتَابَ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ

It is reported by Anas that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: <b>"The night I was taken to the Heavens I passed by people whose lips were being cuts with scissors of Hell fire. I enquired from Gabriel as to who were they. He replied that they were the preachers of my community who used to say things which they did not act upon." -Timizi </b>

<b>PRUDENCE AND MODERATION</b>

عن أبي ذر رضي الله عنه قال قال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يا أبا ذر لا عقل كالتدبير

Abu Zarr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said to me: <b>"O Abu Zarr! There is no wisdom like prudence." -Baihaqi</b>


عن ابن عمر قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الاقتصاد في النفقة نصف المعيشة

It is reported by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: <b>" Moderation in expenditure is half of livelihood." -Baihaqi</b>

<b>Misuse of the Tongue</b>

(a) Telling Lies and Talking Non-Sense

عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ حَدِّثْنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ قَالَ قُلْ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَخْوَفُ مَا تَخَافُ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِ نَفْسِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا

Sufyan bin Abdullah al Saqfy (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that he inquired, <b>"O Apostle of Allah! What is the most dreadful of the things which you consider fearful for me?" He states that he caught hold of his tongue and said: "This one" - Tirmizi</b>
عنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ تَرَكَ الْكَذِبَ وَهُوَ بَاطِلٌ بُنِيَ لَهُ فِي رَبَضِ الْجَنَّةِ

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: <b>"Whoever gives up telling baseless lying (a house) is built for him by the side of Paradise." -Tirmizi</b>

عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ كَبُرَتْ خِيَانَةً أَنْ تُحَدِّثَ أَخَاكَ حَدِيثًا هُوَ لَكَ بِهِ مُصَدِّقٌ وَأَنْتَ لَهُ بِهِ كَاذِبٌ

Sufyan bin Useed al Hazrami (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: <b>"It is the height of treachery (breach of trust) that you report a news to your brother which he believes to be true while you were lying to him." - Abu Daud</b>

عَنْ بَهْزِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ وَيْلٌ لِلَّذِي يُحَدِّثُ فَيَكْذِبُ لِيُضْحِكَ بِهِ الْقَوْمَ وَيْلٌ لَهُ وَيْلٌ لَهُ

Bahz bin Hakeem (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from his father who reports from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: <b>"Woe to him who lies while talking to make people laugh thereby. Woe to him!" -Ahmad, Tirmizi, Abu Daud and Darimi</b>

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا كَذَبَ الْعَبْدُ تَبَاعَدَ عَنْهُ الْمَلَكُ مِيلًا مِنْ نَتْنِ مَا جَاءَ بِهِ

It is narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: <b>"Whenever a man lies, the angel goes a mile away from him on account of the bad smell of what he has produced." -Tirmizi</b>


<b>NO CURSING, NO TAUNTING</b>

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ الْمُؤْمِنُ بِالطَّعَّانِ وَلَا اللَّعَّانِ وَلَا الْفَاحِشِ وَلَا الْبَذِيءِ

Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah, (peace and blessings be upon him) said: <b>"The believer is neither a taunter, nor a curser, nor indecent, nor abuser." </b>

- Tirmizi and Baihaqi

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِصِدِّيقٍ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَعَّانًا

It is reported by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said<b>: It is not proper for a great truthful person to become a great curser." -Muslim</b>

<b>AVOID MIMICKING AND BACKBITING</b>

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنِّي حَكَيْتُ أَحَدًا وَأَنَّ لِي كَذَا وَكَذَا

Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: <b>"I don't like to ape (mimic, copy, imitate) any one, even if this gets me such and such (gains)," -Tirmizi</b>


عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ غَنْمٍ يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خِيَارُ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ إِذَا رُءُوا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَشِرَارُ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الْمَشَّاءُونَ بِالنَّمِيمَةِ الْمُفَرِّقُونَ بَيْنَ الْأَحِبَّةِ الْبَاغُونَ الْبُرَآءَ الْعَنَتَ

It is reported by Abdur Rahman bin Ghanam and Asmaa bint Yazeed (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: <b>"The worst of Allah's people are those who ram about with slanders and those who create separation between friends." - Ahmad and Baihaqi</b>

عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا يَنُمُّ الْحَدِيثَ فَقَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ نَمَّامٌ

Huzaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying<b>: "A back-biter shall not enter Paradise." -Muslim </b>
