as salam a`ala man itaba`alhoda

Ok Phat I thought to move your question starting a new thread, Insh aAllah since your wish is to learn.

In brief, the word Salaf translates as those who came before us, usually they are referred to as righteous Salaf. They are the generation who came after the companions of the Prophet (PAPBUH) may Allah be pleased with all of them, then the Taabe`ayeen (literally translates as successors), then the Salaf (to us those who came before us). They simply strictly adhered to what came in Quran and sunnah.

The four Imams are namely; Abu Hanifa, Shafiey, Ibn Hanbal, and Malik. Those were scholars who spent their entire lives searching the hadeeth and Quran. There is a rule in the hadeeth that if we are given more than one opinion, we follow the easiest to us.

So they searched Quran and hadeeth, came up with four shools of thought regarding for ex. movement of prayer (they are all taken after the Messenger PAPBUH) etc. I just dont want to prolong the post. We are allowed to follow any of these schools, they are all correct, they are all sourced from Quran and sunnah.

This is just a brief and I am sure someone else will be even better to explain to u.

Most welcome PHat any time to ask

The companions of the Prophet (s-a-w) are from the Salaf too [Image: smile.gif], they are the most righteous of them.

as for the 4 imams, they worked searching the Quran and Sunnah to give us rulings according to them, they had some differences in rulings, one reason is because some of the hadiths didn't reach them, for that time hadiths were still being collected, now they are all in books alhamdulillah, so we have them all now.

We look at the rulings they came up with through their studying of the Quran and Hadith, then we see which ruling had strongest proof from Quran and Hadith, the Imam's themselves said that if we find a hadith that contradicts a ruling they gave (because that hadith didn't reach them or they made a mistake while they were studying the Quran and what they had from Hadiths.. they are only human so they make mistakes) then we take what the prophet said and leave their saying.

If what I said is not clear let me know and I will try to clearify it more.

Peace

Well I will try to be here a little bit more explicit.

Alsalaf are really called Al- Salaf Al-Saleh they come under three categories according to certain periods.

1- Al- Sahaba, who fall under two

categories as well :

A- Al-Muhajereen, they are the people

of mekka who immegrated to madeena

fleeing from the kuffar torturing.

B- Al- Ansar, they are the people of

Madeena who supported the prophet

and the Muhajereen.

These two were the ones that lived with the prophet, fought with him, supported him with their lives and money, and saw all his moves, doings and heard his ahadeeth, memorized them and wrote them, and they are to us like stars that enlighten our path after the prophet (pbuh).

2- The tabee'en as sister Muslimah said the successors, they are the children of the sahaba, who were born after the prophet's death.

3- Atba'a altabeen, are the third generation after the prophet. And those who are Known to be rightous and very relegious people, who do not lie, or commit any sin.

So these are considered to ba Al-Salaf Al-Saleh( The Virtous ancestrals)

And they are the ones who memorized the Quran wrote it on papers, and memorized the ahadeeth as well.

The Imams are the ones sister Muslimah said, and they were known to be very pious and virtous and they used to travel a very long time to find one trustworthy hadeeth for the prophet and they used to be very strict in chosing the preson who will tell them the hadeeth.

And I will mention a brief story here our scholar narrated it to us about Al-Bukhary, he travelled one year to search for a hadeeth, someone had told him about a person that had one hadeeth that the Bukhary does not have, it took him almost one year to reach that man, when he went to him the man excused him for a while he wanted his camel to sit or do something (I dont remember [Image: biggrin.gif] ) anyways, so he made as if there was food in his hand, which means he deceived the animal, so when Al-Bukhary saw this, and the man came to him to tell him the hadeeth, he said no thanku I don't need your hadeeth, the man was astonished and said :why? he told him : if u lied to an animal what will stop u to lie to humans

u r not a pious man, so he left him and did not take the hadeeth. So that is why

we trust ahadeeth from these four Imams, because they spent all their lives, money and health searching and studying the sunnah of prophet Mohammad(pbuh) and did not accept these ahadeeths from non trustworthy or unpious men.

I hope I detailed a bit, I know I talked much,[Image: biggrin.gif] but I hope I added more here and I hope everything is clear to u.

If u need more explanation, Insha'Allah

we are all willing to help.

PEACE
