The Power of Prayer
#1

In a small Texas town, (Mt. Vernon) Drummond's bar began construction on a new building to increase their business. The local Baptist church started a campaign to block the bar from opening with petitions and prayers. Work progressed right up till the week before opening when lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground. The church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means. The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise in its reply to the court.

As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork. At the hearing he commented, 'I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer and an entire church congregation that does not.'

Thank you patience for your post, does this mean that alcohol drinking is forbidden in Christianity?

yes alcohol is prohibited in christianity as well.

Prohibition of alcohol in Bible:

1)."Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is decieved thereby is not wise."

[proverbs 20:1]

2)."And be not drunk with wine."

[Ephisians 5:18]

Actually, drinking of wine is allowed in the Bible. Becoming drunk with wine is not. Tareq posted one verse about being drunk but incorrectly attributed it to drinking in general, which is not the case.

Ephesians 5:18

(18) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

The above verse does not say "do not drink wine", it is a warning to not become intoxicated. In the qualifications to be a cleric in Christianity, the following is observed:

Titus 1:7

(7) For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,

But the story at the beginning of the thread was a joke...and a funny one at that.

Assalamo Alikum,

I miss arguing with you
Al Shamms
 just kidding :)

As per my understanding, wine has got two meaning 1)unfermented drink or 2)any other drink that causes intoxication. In proverbs as an example quoted by Tareq, God has condemned the drink itself and not just the act of being drunk (
i.e. wine is a mocker
). If God has declared wine or intoxicants as something raging and mocker, then why should we even have a sip from that evil drink?

If the Bible in
Leviticus 10:9-11
forbade the priests from drinking strong drinks to differentiate between holy and unholy, then why this verse doesn’t apply to us as well? Why wine is portrayed in
Proverbs 23:31
as a biting snake and stinging viper and that no one should even look at it? Why God has warned those who wake up and drink wine in
Isaiah 5:11-12
? If John the Baptist drink no wine/strong drink as a sign of his greatness in the sight of God, then why should we do otherwise? If the 2 verses you have quoted suggests that wine is acceptable, then the verses I am showing now are either contradicting to what you've quoted or speaking about different drinks.

The verse in proverbs does not condemn wine as a whole. In that verse, wine is personified to show the ill effects of abusing the wine. The use of wine, according to the Bible, is nowhere outright forbidden. But there are many warnings about its over use.

Leviticus 10:9-11

(9) "Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.

(10) You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean,

(11) and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the LORD has spoken to them by Moses."

In the above verses, the priests are told not to drink, while carrying out their duties as priests. This is evidenced by the phrase
"when you go into the tent of meeting"
. They were not forbidden from drinking wine as a whole, only while they are carrying out their duties.

according to the Jewish canons, every priest that is fit for service, if he drinks wine, it is forbidden him to enter in (to the tabernacle, and so) from the altar (of burnt offering) and inward (into the holy place); and if he goes in and does his service it is profane (unlawful and rejected), and he is guilty of death by the hand of heaven; and he that drinks the fourth part (of a log) of wine at one time, of wine forty days old; but if he drinks less than a fourth part of wine, or drinks a fourth part and stops between, and mixes it with water, or drinks wine out of the press within forty days (i.e. not quite so many days old), though more than a fourth part, he is free, and does not profane his service; if he drinks more than a fourth part of wine, though it is mixed, and though he stops and drinks little by little, he is guilty of death, and his service is profane (or rejected); if he is drunk with the rest of liquors that make drunk, he is forbidden to go into the sanctuary; but if he goes in and serves, and he is drunk with the rest of liquors that make drunk, whether of milk or of figs (a strong liquor made of them), he is to be beaten, but his service is right; for they are not guilty of death but on account of wine in the hour of service; and it does not profane service, but being drunken with wine -- John Gill's Exposition of the Bible

Al Shamms, why the original post is funny, in which sense??

Wael, I think Al Shamms is basing his belief that drinking wine is not forbidden on the famous story when Jesus blessing and peace be upon him turned water into wine during a celebration when the gather ran out of it. That was after his mother Virgin Mary blessing and peace be upon her drew people's attention that he can.

You can tell by the way it reads it's a joke.

And no, I'm not basing my opinion on that story alone, but on the total evidence contained in the bible. You won't find one scripture where wine is expressly forbidden. Like I said before, but you will find verses warning against its overuse.

Assalamo Alikum,

I myself don't think that God Almighty would allow us to drink "
the most dangerous substance based on the overall dangers to the individual and society as a whole
"according to latest finding:
