But seriously, this seems to be an issue among the muslims and a clear answer would satisfy my curiosity. Is it obligatory or a suggestion for muslimah to cover their faces, ie; wear the niqab? :conf06:
The point had even been raised that this ruling (is that what it's called?) that women shouldn't wear it among other women is a plot from "the West".
The truth is that there is a difference of opinion among the scholars about weather or not it is obligatory for the woman to cover her face. So there really is no clear answer for this question. The most liberal view is that the woman should have a scarf that covers the hair, and the clothing should be loose fitting and shapeless.
In any case, I think if a woman wants to cover her face nobody should have the right to prevent her from doing so. Unless of course for passport photo, drivers license or other identification needs.

Peace....
Since there is no consensus on the subject, it would make sense that it would be one of those things that is up to the particular person to decide for themselves. For instance in the Bible, there was a difference of opinion about having the gentiles (non jews) observe the jewish feast days. Paul addressed this subject in a letter stating:
Romans 14:5-6
(5) One indeed esteems a day above another day; and another esteems every day alike. Let each one be fully assured in his own mind.
(6) He who regards the day regards it to the Lord; and he not regarding the day, does not regard it to the Lord. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, does not eat to the Lord, and gives God thanks.
It would appear to this non-muslim that the wearing of niqab would also fall into this category.

Shamms, I might have come a little bit late, but usually I prefer to leave two people discuss specially in similar cases as sometime a third party would just overwhelm the questioner.
The thread was not talking about a Non Muslim entity banning Niqab or intending to ban Niqab, but rather the head of the most prestigious Muslim entity. He is called the Grand Imam. Well, even if he intended to do so because there some cases of abuse, defraud..etc. There is always a solution of providing a woman to validate the Niqabbi's identity, just as the situation in Saudi Arabia. Thus, a student coming to exam can be simply identified and validated by a woman who checks her face against her ID. But banning it and calling it mere tradition, as Jennifer said, if one wants to fully cover, why the fuss? unlike when women fully undress to swim no one objects.

I have heard alot of good things about the Al-Azhar University, I even have a friend who has gone to study there. However, I have heard some kinda funny things coming out of there when it comes to the Hijab issue. Apart from this issue, the imam at the time (I think it was tantawi but not sure if it was Muhammad Sayyed), said that women in france would be expempt from wearing the hijab out of "Necessity".
Allah alone knows.

Assalamualaikum
The face is the focus of temptation and desire, it is the most tempting part of her body, because what people look at most is the face, so the face is the greatest ‘awrah of a woman. In these present times where immorality and sin is widespread, a muslimah will be safe from sin covering her face.
(p.s to clarify i have not said you should or shold not cover your face in islam)

If the face is the focus of temptation and desire....who's focus, temptation and desire are we speaking about? The woman who covers her face, or the man that looks upon her face?
"In these present times where immorality and sin is widespread, a muslimah will be safe from sin covering her face."
Who's immorality and sin is widespread? And who's sin will the muslimah be safe from?
Suhail, what I'm getting from your post is:
Since we men cannot control our temptation, desires and since we cannot lower our gaze as the qur'an states. Because of this, the muslim male's immorality and sin are widespread so to assist the muslim man in controlling his passions, muslim women should cover their faces.
Is this correct?

The Man

Who's immorality and sin is widespread?
Mankind as a whole
Quote:And who's sin will the muslimah be safe from?
The man will be saved from sin by looking at an unlawful women with desire, and the women will be saved from sin by not persuing the mans desire

Mankinds immorality, (not just muslim)
Quote:and sin are widespread so to assist the muslim man
To assist men in general(not just muslim men - non muslims r also attracted to muslim women...........)
Quote:in controlling his passions,
not just "his" passions "her" passions as well
Quote:muslim women should cover their faces.
Is this correct?
Yes "all" women not just muslim women should cover their face - (their would be less rape, fewer affairs, fewer divorces, etc etc etc etc)
