Bible for Children

Do you advise your children to read the Bible even if you are not with them?

My parents did. I was given a Children's (Catholic) Bible on my First Holy Communion & I read it all the time.


There's nothing better than hearing Sacred Scripture being proclaimed during Mass, so if I'm ever blessed with children, I plan on taking them to church with me everyday.


Here's a fascinating fact: If a Catholic goes only to Sunday Mass in the course of 3 years, he/she will have been exposed to two-thirds of the Bible.

Let's cut to the chase, shall we?


It contained every part of salvation history including the conflicts, infidelities & brazen acts of disobedience by God's chosen people found in the O/T. It portrayed a candid picture of the relationship between God & Israel using literary genres and imagery that children are capable of understanding. Basically, I grasped the same biblical meanings, truths, & morals as a child as I do now as an adult.

Don't get me wrong FHC ok? I just can't imagine that you were reading as a child, the story of Amnon raping his sister, and understood it to mean something else? Let me bring the whole story here.


“Go to bed and pretend to be ill, “Jonadab said. “When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘I would like my sister Tamar to come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food in my sight so I may watch her and then eat it from her hand.



So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. When the kind came to see him, Amnon said to him, “I would like my sister Tamar to come and make some special bread in my sight, so I may eat from her hand.


David sent word to Tamar at the palace. “Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare some food for him.


So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made the bread in his sight and baked it.


Then she took the pan and served him the bread, but he refused to eat. “Send everyone out of here,” Amnon said. So everyone left him.


Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom.



But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.”


“Don’t, my brother” she said to him. “Don’t force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this wicked thing.


What about me? Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.”


But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her. II Samuel 13:5-14


What disturbed me the most is that Amnon was left unpunished by God, so what was the lesson behind this 'revelation'? and how could you read and imagine what happened as a kid?


What did you understand from the story of the 2 sisters found in Ezekiel 23? did you get anything other than lust, prostitution, breasts, and private parts which were like donkeys, and sperm which was like that of horses. I am sorry to speak in this manner, but I am eager to understand how Steve is encouraging his kids to read the Bible on their own and how your parents were letting you read these materials?


“They became prostitutes in Egypt engaging in prostitution from their youth. In that lad their breasts were fondled and their virgin bosoms caressed.” V.3



“…she lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians warriors.” V.5


“When during her youth men slept with her, caressed her virgin bosom and poured out their lust upon her.” V.8


“As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.” V.16


“Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her.” V. 17


“There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.” V.20


Please note, I am not judging the intention behind the written words, its interpretation or its wisdom, I am talking about what I am reading in plain language and what might my children understand and behave afterwards!!


That's why I asked, did your parents give you a complete Bible to read on your own?

LOL Is this what was meant by The Satanic Verses?


All scripture is so confusing, isn't it?


I think it was Jacob who slept with his daughter-in-law, who was posing as a prostitute, because he was not giving her his due respect, after the death of his son and her husband.


Should we return to the old ways? What are the new ways? Are they any better?


My kids get most of their bible reading from church. One year for Christmas, I gave them all a copy of a "bible story of the day" book. Only one of them read it.


The kids are never going to learn anything by reading scripture in a vacuum, like a Mandarin. Like everyone else, they are going to learn through experience. Here in America, there is so much violence that a story in scripture seems tame. Let's not forget wars, terrorism, schoolyard bullying, and sibling rivalry, too. Kids don't need to read scripture to learn about the dark side of human nature, it is all around them.


To learn the light of scripture is a totally different matter. I encourage them to read, but it more important for them to think. The Holy Spirit is written on our hearts. They will know it more as they grow, at a pace of their and God's choosing.


The Holy Spirit permeates the whole world. It is as visible in our conversation as it is in scripture. Of course, it is good for them to know the past, but the goal is to understand the past, and the present with it.

Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? 2You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. 3You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

The issue is always one of interpretation. Some see the good and say it is good, others see the good and say it is bad.

It seems to me like a roundabout way of saying that whatever is written in the Bible isnt really all that important. What do you have it for anyway? A prop? If you just want to rely on feelings and 'life experiance' and the like what is the importance of the Bible at all then? What would be the importance of any particular religion at all for that matter??


Sorry for interjecting, but that just threw me.
