having a non muslim spouse
#1

Assalam alaikum.. I’ve read an article on this site saying that it is okay to marry or stay married to someone who is not a Muslim (who is from the people of the book) but as far as I heard that it is not permitted. Sure there was a time when it was practiced and permitted but later on it was withdrawn.. I’m asking about it because I get both version of the system. Some people call it ok some people not.

in here it is also mentioned that someone can stay with their spouses even after converting to islam. i have another question about that too.. When Umme Kulsum (daughter of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)) were married to a non Muslim guy back then it was permited. When one of the wars broke out her husband was one of the POW of the Muslim (because he was fighting for the non Muslim side) anyway, he was released by letting his wife get back to her parents home.

But later on the rule had changed. People got divorced when they converted to Islam so there wasn’t string attached. Now tell me which one we should follow?

I’m asking this because honestly I don’t have enough knowledge about Islam but I would like to learn more.

as salam alykom sister

From what I know and I don't call myself a scholar no way, that the Prophet's daughter Zainab was married to Al A`as (non Muslim). He allowed her to immigrate and join her father, Then he was captured with a trade caravan as a war prisoner by Muslims. Her father went in and warned her not to take him as a husband. Now a Muslim woman is not allowed to remian with her non Muslim husband. Wallahu A`alam. However, we may do more search on this point. And can u just insert the link which has this point on this board.

Jazaki Allah khairan
