White thread from black thread
#1

Bismillah

as salam alykom brothers and sisters

Did any of you encounter a situation when a muslim argued that we can continue eating and drinking and other issues only permitted after fast breaking till sunrise under the pretext that the Ayah says "So now have sexual relations with them and seek that which Allah has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appears to you distinct from the black," (Quran 2:187)

Actually, the meaning of this Ayah, is till there is sufficient amount of light that allows you to differentiate between a white and black thread (when there is no other source of light like a lamp or something).

This is very important for all of us to fully understand, since there is a group going around raising suspicion in this area and trying to pursue others with their point. May Allah Protect us ameen.

A hadith related to your post:

[sahih Bukhari : volume 3, Book 31, Number 140]

Narrated Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (Radi Allah Anhu): When the above verses was revealed: "Until the white thread appears to you , distinct from the black thread," I took two (hair) strings one black and one white , and kept them under my pillow and went on looking at them throughout the night but could not make anything out of it. So, the next morning I went to Allah's Messenger Muhammad (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ), and told him the whole story. He explained me, "That the verse means the darkness of night and blackness of drawn."

Asalaamu alikum

Leave it to me to write while I am half asleep. I just want to correct the last statement above before there is confusion:

THE DARKNESS OF NIGHT AND THE LIGHTNESS OF DAWN.

subhanallah

Masha'Allah sister Jenniffer this hadeeth is correct and it means that mean when athan Alfajer starts then we will start fasting, and all that Imsak stuff they talk about is wrong, I heard on fatwas on saudi arabia TV that even if u are raising a cup to drink and or a any bite to eat, do not throw that away complete that drink and that bite, and I heard on another program that the imsak habit started with the Fatmyeen, and was not at the time of Prophet Muhammad Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him or his sahaba or tabeen.

I have the full issue in one book here at home sister M. I will search for it and post it soon isnha'Allah, since it is 1:20 now and I am very sleepy, have to go sleep for 2 hours before athan

According to Imam Al-Shafii, regarding this verse (2/187), the white thread means the light of the day, and the black thread means darkness of the night, and Al-Fajer is a light that appears in the horizon which ends the night and starts the day, and according to Shafii also, from good manners of fasting, is delaying sahoor " That is one should end from eating and drinking before the rise of fajer, and the evidence of that what imam Ahmad narrated in his musnad(5/147) that Prophet Muhammad( Peace be upon him) said:"My ummah is still in a good position if they quicken the iftar and delays sahoor"
and also i Bukhari(556) that Anas ibn Malik(may Allah be pleased with him) said:"that Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him and zayed ibn thabet were in eating during sahor time, so when they finished their sahoor the prophet(Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood and started praying. we asked Anas how much time was between the time they finished their sahoor and starting prayer, he said the time a man reads 50 ayahs"

According to ibn katheer

Allah said:

(...and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your fast till the nightfall.)

Allah has allowed eating and drinking, along with having sexual intercourse, as we have stated, during any part of the night until the light of dawn is distinguished from the darkness of the night. Allah has described that time as `distinguishing the white thread from the black thread.' He then made it clearer when He said:

[مِنَ الْفَجْرِ]

(of dawn.)

And Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala knows best

I will search for more fatwas, insha'Allah and explanation if what I wrote is not clear and enough, please let me know sis M. :)
