Are muslim women allowed to remove their facial hairs except their eyebrows?

Sheikh Al Munajjid's website is my favorite for religious rulings. The <i>muftis</i> on this website are pretty much all reliable. Be aware that their rulings are always back by Qur'an and Prophetic traditions unlike some other sites that are out there.

With regard to hair which is abnormal, because it grows in places where hair does not usually grow, such as a woman having a moustache or hair growing on her cheeks, there is nothing wrong with removing this, because it is abnormal and is disfiguring to the woman.


The Standing Committee was asked about women removing facial hair, and they replied as follows:


It is OK for a woman to remove hair on the upper lip, thighs, calves and arms. This is not the same as plucking (eyebrows), which is forbidden.

I would like to find out if muslim women can dye their hair using products like Clairol and so on. In addition, must all women wear gowns instead of a pants and blouse outfit?

One of the conditions of hijab is that the clothes must not show the shape of the woman. This can be kind of hard to pull off in western style pants and blouse, which are usually styled to be somewhat form fitting, but can be done as you see in the traditional style indo/pak salwar kameez (which means shirt and pants).

Thanks, but i really would like to know if we could dye our hair other than using henna.

From what I understood it is fine to color the hair, but we cannot color it black.

I know that it is permissible for a woman to use henna to color her hair, but i am wondering if it is okay to use bleach or other hair coloring on womens hair.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked about that and he said:


If the hair is dyed black, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade that when he commanded a man to change his white hair, but to avoid black. He said: “Change this white hair but avoid black.” (See Saheeh Muslim, 5476). A stern warning has also been narrated to the one who does that, namely the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “There will be people at the end of time who will dye their hair black like the crops of birds; they will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4212; al-Nasaa'i, 8/138; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami', 8153). This indicates that it is forbidden to change the hair with black dye. With regard to changing it with different colours of dye, the basic principle is that it is permissible, unless it is done in the manner of kaafir women or immoral women, in which case it is forbidden for that reason, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4031; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa' al-Ghaleel, 5/109).

<b>CONDITIONS OF HIJAB</b>


1. Clothing must cover the entire body, only the hands and face may remain visible (According to some Fiqh Schools) .


2. The material must not be so thin that one can see through it.


3. The clothing must hang loose so that the shape / form of the body is not apparent.


4. The female clothing must not resemble the man's clothing.


5. The design of the clothing must not resemble the clothing of the non believing women.


6. The design must not consist of bold designs which attract attention.


7. Clothing should not be worn for the sole purpose of gaining reputation or increasing one's status in society.
