Allah is "Emmanuel"
#1

Bismillah: Assalamo Alikum.

I recently discovered a book was written by John Paul II titled "Crossing The Threshold of Hope"

In this book, JPII talks about Islam, Muhammad pbuh and the Qur'an. I am not sure if he was able to read the Qur'an during his lifetime or somebody have told him about Allah's attributes in the Qur'an , but he intentionally or unintentionally said the truth about the most High God, Allah. He said:

Quote:"Some of the most beautiful names in the human language are given to the God of the Koran…,

Its true, more than 99 beautiful names and attributes of God were recorded in the Qur'an, there is no other religious book on earth that can compete with the Qur'an in this matter, Alhamdulelah.

But sadly, he then said <b>ONE</b> word which destroys the beauty of his statement, and this word was <b>BUT
</b>, and you know all, that usually, whatever comes after the word <b>BUT</b>, comes in a negative way, and that was the case, he said:

Quote:but he is ultimately a God outside of the world, a God who is only Majesty, never <b>Emmanuel, God-with-us</b>.

Clearly, he meant that although God's names as mentioned in the Qur'an are the most beautiful, <b>BUT</b> that means nothing at all, because according to him, God in Islam is not <b>EMMANUEL, Allah is not with us.</b>

The pope, or other Christians does not really know anything about God's attributes in Islam, and its our duty as Muslims to clarify this misconception, the Christians didn't really know that among these beautiful attributes are <b>The All-Knowing, the Omniscient, The All-Hearing, The All-Seeing, The All-Aware, The Watchful, The Vast, the All-Encompassing, The Witness, The Ever-Living</b>, etc etc… <b>How can God Almighty with these unique attributes not to be with us? </b>

The Pope also didn't know that our God, <b>Allah is also Emmanuel, and that this exact word was mentioned in the Qur'an.</b>

…for Allah did indeed help him, when the Unbelievers drove him out: he had no more than one companion; they two were in the cave, and he said to his companion, "Have no fear, for <b>Allah is with us</b>":
Qur’an 9:40

So here we go, Emmanuel or God with us, is to be found in the Qur'an proving that the Pope was <b>100% wrong when he said that our God, Allah is never Emmanuel</b>.

Alsalam alaykum wa rahmat Allah wa barakatuh,

"Mat 1:23 Behold, a <b>virgin shall be with child</b>, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name<b> Emmanuel</b>, which being interpreted is, God with us. "

It could be just me but I think the Pope is implying that Allah is not Emmanuel, therefore he is not Jesus.

Actually bro, this can be seen in two different lights.

On one hand, the mark difference between Islam and many other religions is that Islam Believes that Allah is not "everywhere", He is on his throne above all of creation. He is above us. This is evident in many aayat eg. Surah Taa Haa(20) aayah 4

"The Merciful (i.e. Allah) is established on his throne"

The aayah quoted above;

…for Allah did indeed help him, when the Unbelievers drove him out: he had no more than one companion; they two were in the cave, and he said to his companion, "Have no fear, for Allah is with us": Qur’an 9:40

refers to (if i am not mistaken) the Hijrah, when Abu Bakr and the Holy Prophet were in the cave together.

It does not literally mean, physically here with us, but he is with us in this situation or he is mindful of us etc...

But I take your point Wel...

It kinda sounds like the pope made Allah sound "Far Away" from us and sooo disconnected. this is clearly contradicted by the aayah you quoted..

Emmanuel does not mean Jesus, Emmanuel is a Hebrew word which means <b>God with us</b>, Matt1:23 was quoting Isiah somewhere in the OT, where the verse explicitly says that this come son <b>WOULD BE CALLED EMMANUEL</b>, but amazingly no one ever have called Jesus Emmanuel in his lifetime, but this is not our topic now, the point is that the Pope was trying to make the God of the Qur'an limited, although he possess some of the most beautiful names and attributes, but all these names means nothing because he is <b>far far away from us </b> as Naseeha rightly said. But Alhamdulelah, I've proven with Allah's help that he was wrong.

The difference could be that the Christian interpretation of 'being with us' has taken literal turn, while Islam teaches that the Creator is not of course a part of His creation, obviously He Subhanahu wa Ta'ala cannot and will not be with is in the sense of being here in the flesh, as the Christian interpretation is.

He Subhanahu wa Ta'ala does not take a human formation, since He is unique (Surah 112) - but still He is close to us.

This ayah should make that very clear inshaAllah,

''It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.

May Allah reward you from bringing this verse,

''It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: <b>for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein</b>. beautiful.

Glory to God, peace on earth, goodwill to all.

It always hard to speak about God/Allah (SWT) in human terms. When someone asks me "where is God" I immediately think to myself, "well where isn't He?" Catholics aren't Pantheists but strictly speaking we don't restrict God to a particular time/space. The thing about "Emmanuel" is that "the Word was made flesh & dwelt amongst us". Jesus Christ, the Son of God, entered the world as we, humans, know it.

I guess Christians & Muslims have distinct perceptions of God/Allah (SWT) & relate to Him differently. If a Muslim & I entered a Church & I said, "Emmanuel", it would never occur to the Muslim that I'm adoring the Blessed Sacrament in the holy tabernacle, yet he may feel Allah's presence in another sense. Same end.. different means.

Wael, you always take things the wrong way, man  JP2 (RIP) loved Muslims & in turn was loved by many. His comment was not intended to be seen in a negative light. He was simply stating an obvious fact. It pertains to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, & Redemption. Did you read the whole chapter? I think at times he was kind & other times he was brutal towards both Islam & Catholics. What I admired about him most is his honesty - he'd always tell it like it even if the truth hurt.

Why is Allah (SWT) referred to in the plural form in Sura 50:16?

Shukran :)

Peace & blessings.
