JazakALLAH brother.

Indeed the nafs is an immensely heavy thing to overcome.

According to Ahlu-sunnah wal Jamaah (this is not a sect as people commonly think...its kind of a nick name for the Prophet SAAW's ummah. It means the way of the Prophet SAAW and the way of his companions, the pious Suhaba-e-Karaam)

FAJAR = 2 sunnah + 2 farz

ZUHR = 4 sunnah + 4 farz + 2 sunnah

ASR = (2 or 4 sunnah ghair muaqqadah*) + 4 Farz

MAGHRIB = 3 Farz + 2 Sunnah

ISHA = 4 farz + 2 sunnah + an odd no. of witr (1 or 3...)

The Prophet SAAW used to say witr after saying tahajjud prayer in the last part of the night. According to a hadith in sahih Bukhari he used to say 12 rakah of tahajjud (2+2+2+2+2+2) and the one witr. This has been narrated by Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (RAA)

* ghair muaqqadah are those sunnah which the Prophet SAAW did not do regularly. (Please someone correct me if I am wrong but this is the undestanding that i have after consulting some scholars.)

Brother this is what i know. If anyone thinks I have erred then please correct me.

And ALLAH (SWT) knows best.

Please remember me in your prayers to our Rabb, Allah (SWT)

Here are some references for the numbers of rakah of farz and sunnah in each prayer. Please makedua for me. JazakAllah.

FARZ PRAYERS (references)

<b></b>

2 farz of fajr = Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 12 :: Hadith 726

4 farz in Zuhr = Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 12 :: Hadith 743

4 farz of Zuhr and Asr in normal circumstances (and 2 in travel) = Malik :: Book 20 : Hadith 20.63.212

3 farz of maghrib (in both normal circumstances and travel) = Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 20 :: Hadith 197

4 farz in Isha = Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 12 :: Hadith 722

[2 farz of isha in travel: Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 20 :: Hadith 197]

SUNNAHS (references)

<b>One Hadith explaining all the sunnahs of all prayers = Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1584</b>

justification of 2 sunnah of fajr and 4 sunnah before zuhr = Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 21 :: Hadith 276

justificationof 4 sunnah before zuhr and 2 sunnah after it = Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1584

2 rakah sunnah before zuhr is also reported in ahadith = Malik :: Book 9 : Hadith 9.23.72 and Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 21 :: Hadith 266... so i guess both 2 and 4 are sunnah.

justification of 2 rakah sunnah before asr prayer = Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1816 (also clarifys that the Prophet SAAW always

did it...so i was wrong about him not always doing it... AstaghfirULLAH)

justification of 2 sunnah after maghrib = Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1584

justification of 2 sunnah after isha = Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1584

And ALLAH (SWT) Knows Best. (Wa' ALLAHu A'lam)
