HIJAB - Give your input

FHC

For a change, let me talk to you from the Islamic viewpoint without any anologies.

Ok, a Muslim (male or female) each has obligations that he/she must strive to adhere to. In case of failure, one is subjected to Divine (when the violation involves a right of Allah like parts of worship: prayer, fasting, zakah Allah Shall Decide how and when to punish or pardon) or punishment in this world thru the Hudud when the violation involves transgression over other human rights (stealing, killing, Zina: hole on this is a crime against the society..etc).

Abiding by the Muslim women dress code is an obligation, but doing so does not turn the woman into an angle or sinless. She still is a human being who is subjected to self or devlish inspiration. The issue is that currently, specially in the Muslim world like where I live, people are always having high expectation of women who abide by the dress code. They place them high. Not that I like it when I find a girl thinking wrongly that she is adhereing while dressed up in a tight jeans, and just a sort of a long (sometimes short tight) top also, with a peace of cloth over her head and sometimes full make up. I dont like it, because she is supposed to be maintaing her identity. But I dont judge her. She is striving, she is facing much temptation.

Again, even the one who wears full gear (A`baya, or niqab, full head cover no make up..), she is not an angle, she may commit sins. But we have the door of repentance opened.

Thus, the women dress code is an obligation just like fasting, prayer, Zakah, ...etc. If a woman fails to adhere, she will be judged by Allah, but I know that she is falling short that is it.

To bring it more clearly, at the time of the Messenger prayer and peace be upon him, women dress code was adopted on a universal level. It was not an option. However, now except with Saudi Arabia and I think Afghanistan and Iran (not sure if they are still applying this), it became an option a choice the Muslim woman makes. Thus, the society usually looks in a very special manner to one who chooses to abide by it, placing her in a high rank, expecting much from her. Whereas, she just abided by what Allah Commanded her in terms of appearence.

And astaghferullah I m going to change the topic title, may Allah Forgive me for leaving it so long. If we want to discuss the dress code, we can, but we cannt ask if it is wal iyadhubillah a curse, for certainly it is not.

Salam Muslimah & thanks for your contribution :)

I just have one more question...

What's the official dress code for Islamic women? Why do some females cover their bodies completely from head to toe (berka), while others allow the exposure of eyes & hands (abaya + niqab), & the majority opt for only a veil & loose casual clothing (modernized societies)???

Are all standards acceptable or is there one in particular that all women must adhere to?

As I'm sure you know by now, this aspect of Islam doesn't bother me at all.

Oops! Sorry... I didn't mean any harm.

Thank you & God bless.

According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab:

1.Extent:

The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands up to the wrist. <b>If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. </b>

The remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.

2. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.

3. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.

4. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.

5. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.

6. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions.

Please also note that the complete hijaab, besides the six criteria of clothing, <b>also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual</b>. A person only fulfilling the criteria of hijaab of the clothes is observing hijaab in a limited sense. Hijaab of the clothes should be accompanied by <b>hijaab of the eyes, hijaab of the heart, hijaab of thought and hijaab of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc.</b>

I'm absolutely mesmerized by this part...

The essential core of hijab truly lies within. I'm liking it a lot!!!

FHC abiding by the outsider appearence is a major inseparable part of the dress code. Yes the inner part as well as the overall behaviour is equally important. BUt both complete each other in order to fulfil the over all objective of protecting and improving the Muslims society on one hand and esablish the Muslim women identity whereever she is on the other.

Yes Wael, but how can you fulfil the outer hijab without first fulfilling the inner? If a woman is immodest in her heart then no outfit will adequately cover up her real self.

Thanks Muslimah :) I understand the completeness part but whenever we discuss hijab on the boards, the Islamic women I co-exist with immediately come to mind & unfortunately only a handful of them observe the correct criteria. I tend to think that... it's only when you're pure from within that you can pull off hijab in its truest sense.

I don't know! It's just my opinion!

I guess you need an immediate reminder of what Islam is. :)

Islam means surrender, submission, obedience to the will of Almighty God, Whatever Allah and His Messenger have set out as being the way of Islam is to be followed perfectly and completely. Now, you cant surrender, submit and obey God and His messenger <b>unless you are sincere and honest</b>, because Allah is Pure and He only accepts pure, the Prophet Muhammad pbuh told us that "Verily, deeds are rewarded by intention. And everyone will have the reward for that which he has intended."

<b>Sincere intention is the key to the success or failure of the Muslim</b>, whether we talk on Hijab or any other issue. So any Muslim sister, who observes Hijab, must be for the sake of Allah and not for the chance to show off or call attention to herself. If there is even a speck of pride or showing off for the people instead of doing for Allah, then the whole of the matter will be rejected by Allah on the Day of Judgment. <b>This is due to the fact that Allah wants purity of intention and purity in deed, both go hand by hand FHC, inner and outer</b>.

So once we humble ourselves, submit totally to Allah, and to Him exclusively, <b>in faith and in action</b>, obey Him with sincerity, we will surely feel peace in our hearts. And establishing peace in our hearts will bring about peace in our external conduct as well.

Instead of looking at Muslims surrounding your, why don’t you observe the life of Muhammad's pbuh wives and daughter?
