Would you be able to do this?

The number of internet paedophiles arrested has quadrupled in four years. As internet crime soars, is it time ISP start monitoring of customer activities?

The Positives of ISP Monitoring

If all ISPs were to monitor what each user downloaded, they could better weed out those people who download materials such as Child Pornography. Then the ISP could inform the police of the activity, while passing on the address of the person doing it. This would speed up the capture of paedophiles and help keep children safe. Some ISPs could even introduce a monitor program that keeps an eye on any P2P software installed and keeps track of the files that have been downloaded. It would be a great leap forward in the attempts to cut the growing Internet crimes.

The Negatives of ISP Monitoring

One big negative that some people may immediately focus on is breach of privacy. Internet users should be allowed to have a strong level of privacy, to help protect their identities while online. With the increase in hacking, people could get into these programs and take personal information without you even knowing. This is very rare, but possible none the less. It is also possible that all your personal IMs and emails could be stored away without your permission and read without you knowing. This would be a major breach in your privacy.

That's both sides of the coin. Yes it would really help tackle crime...or would it be Big Brother to the extreme. You would be watched, everything you see, hear, download and everyone you talk to will be recorded.

The question is: Would you allow your ISP to monitor internet activities on the basis that it would help tackle internet crime, to protect those children?

I think this is a great idea, talking about the pseu‧do privacy, pls I m sure you know better Kal. I mean what privacy when Hagana site for example is classifying the Islamic sites into Jihadi, salafi, having the IP addresses of the owner. Where is the privacy when you can be tracked by CIA, FBI or the like. Even on the local level, where is the privacy when places like Saudi Arabia monitor sites thru their ...city, here in Egypt some ISPs serve the government in tracking users of certain boards. Thus, we are deceiving ourselves if we think that we have privacy. Having said that, in all cases we dont really have privacy. If our privacy is breached for such a noble purpose I for one personally dont mind at all. We really need our children to be safe dont we?

Jazakum Allah khairan for this post Kal.

Salam,

Ofcourse no one has real privacy when it comes to the Internet - but this proposal is directly letting the user know he/she is being watched. I'd much rather prefer if they didnt tell me - you know what i mean?

The real debate here is not the concept, but the psychological impact it'd have on people if the only tool, where most people in the world can express their opinions freely, being limited or caged; thats the real issue here.

I did a survey on this, and 85% people refused this proposal. <_<

I think one of the reasons that people like the internet is that they can say and do things that they could never do in reality. Some good, some bad.

I have to wonder though at what people are so afraid of being discovered if something like the protection of innocent children can't get them to accept such measures.

Like it has been said, monitoring is occurring anyway. We may as well know about it and know that it is for a good reason.

Sobhan Allah, really 85% refused. Sobhan Allah, people are deceiving themselves. Of course i know I m being monitored whether or not I m told. Why would i deceive myself.

And again as Dan said, if it is for good reason why not.

Whether or not i m told, I know very well I m.

You know what, I dont want to rant, but just a quick comment. Like 6 years ago, when the boycot was at peak here in Egypt. My co workers and myself were very active thru emails. We were calling for boycotting US products in Egypt including food franchisers, which had a major impact that was measured thru decrease of their income. It was evern mentioned on CNN. Any way the chairman of the place where i work, mentioned that US trade department contacted the Egyptian cabinet on the governmental position towards the boycot. They specifically said that they recorded 600 emails calling for boycot and inquiring if this was a governmental position. And u r telling me what is the psychological impact? Well the psychological impact is that me and my co workers are still doing the same but from personal emails. :) :) :)

Dan, did i get off topic...?????? hiding from Dan

Jazaki Allah khairan Nasra, we are on their list since last year actually. Last year they classified us as Jihadi/salafi. They are very well organized, united, dedicating the effort were it should be, supporting one another. Sobhan Allah, when are we Muslims be like this.

Because its the thin end of the wedge. Right now they say its to stop paedophiles, but give it six months and it would be expanded to cover financial fraud, or some such. Then six months later something else. Each change would be subtle, and barely noticed by the public, and anyone complaining would be shouted down with the "What have you got to hide?" line.

Then it is the fault of those who oppress people with their power. my issue is only with the child porn thing. When I discuss the hypothetical, I usually try to very literal and minimalistic.

Of course, there is the slippery slope but that slope can go both ways. How much will we let people get away with stuff for the sake of other freedoms? I am muslim and believe in the middle path and believe that a middle path can be found in this situatio as well.
