Sura 33:55
Quote:[33:50] O prophet, we made lawful for you your wives to whom you have paid their due dowry, or what you already have, as granted to you by GOD. Also lawful for you in marriage are the daughters of your father's brothers, the daughters of your father's sisters, the daughters of your mother's brothers, the daughters of your mother's sisters, who have emigrated with you. Also, if a believing woman gave herself to the prophet - by forfeiting the dowry - the prophet may marry her without a dowry, if he so wishes. <b>However, her forfeiting of the dowry applies only to the prophet, and not to the other believers.</b> We have already decreed their rights in regard to their spouses or what they already have. <b>This is to spare you any embarrassment.</b> GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

Unless I am reading wrong, it appears that that the law written here is directed for the Prophet so that he doesn't get "embarrassment." It then goes on to say, "Her forfeiting of the dowry only applies to the prophet and not to other believers. It seems that "other believers" are excluded from this law.
Also, from a historical approach, is it not true that Mohammed had more than 4 wives? Is it lawful for other believers to have more than four wives?

salam Curious,
The 4 wives part is correct, he had 9 and that was an exception only to him
Briefly, why? it was even made compulsory to him not to divorce any of them even if he wanted to, or replace her, or take more after Allah Established the maximum number.
This Ayah explains this situation:
"It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives even though their beauty attracts you, except those (captives or slaves) whom your right hand possesses. And Allah is Ever a Watcher over all things." (Quran 33:52)
Can u see, actually he was the only man not allowed to divorce a wife or take another. Because Allah Made it unlawful to marry his wives even after his death. So come to think about it, this family were subjected to execlusive restrictions which were not enforced on other Muslims.
Allah Say:"O you who believe! Enter not the Prophet's houses, except when leave is given to you for a meal, (and then) not (so early as) to wait for its preparation. But when you are invited, enter, and when you have taken your meal, disperse, without sitting for a talk. Verily, such (behaviour) annoys the Prophet, and he is shy of (asking) you (to go), but Allah is not shy of (telling you) the truth. And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not (right) for you that you should annoy Allah's Messenger, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him (his death). Verily! With Allah that shall be an enormity." (Quran 33:53)
If u link the above mentioned two Ayahs u will see that they regulate manners with regard to dealing with the Messenger prayer and peace be upon him and his household.
The reason for revealing the 53 is that people used to go and shout calling him at any time, in one of his marriages, people kept sitting there eating and he was of course shy to tell them he needs privacy. The last part is someone once declared in public, in order to offend him, that he will marry so and so after his death. Allah by this Ayah made it unlawful. That is why they were called mothers of believers.
Thus, he cannt divorce them also according to the Ayah and for the same reasons.
The rest of the dowry part, Insh aAllah i will come back for it later. :)

Thanks for the answer. Is it also true that he married a six year old girl and consumated that marriage when the girl was nine? Is this a common practice or something that was exclusive to Mohammed?

It's not something exclusive to the Prophet. Prophet came to set the example for all of mankind. And you will find the same practice was in effect in many parts of the world (including Europe) at this time.

If you even look back into US history the legal age for marriage in 1872 was 9 years old. This was the practice all over the world as Sister Jennifer has pointed out many years before the time frame I have mentioned. There was no laws even in parts of the world where this age was accepted and practiced as well.

I don't know about that. A source would be revealing. I agree with you though, that especially in older times girls married at an earlier age. The earliest that I've ever heard of in the U.S. which was legal is 13-14.

Bismillah:
In our world today, we still have people especially in the third world countries, marry very young girls. Why should we feel so strange when someone else married a 9-year old girl <b>1400 years ago </b> , when we still practice it today? The girl above even gave birth at the age of 9!
Not only was it a custom in the Arab society to Engage/Marry a young girl it was also common in the Jewish society. The case of Mary the mother of Jesus pbuh comes to mind, in non biblical sources she was about 11 years old when she conceived Jesus. Mary had already been "BETROTHED" to Joseph before conceiving Jesus. Joseph was a much older man. therefore Mary was younger than 11 years of age when she was "BETHROED" to Joseph.
According to the Priest of Saint Mary's Catholic Church: <i>"Mary was approximately 14 years old when she got pregnant with Jesus. Joseph, Mary's Husband is believed to be around 36. Mary was only 13 when she married Joseph. When she first was arranged with Joseph she was between 7 to 9 years old."</i>
According to the "Oxford Dictionary Bible" commentary, Mary (peace be upon her) was was 12 years old when she became impregnated.
So nothing strange i guess.
another point to ponder is that a lot of the things we do today are not right in the eyes of many. Our "standards" today means nothing to what took place 1400 years ago. Today, anyone under 18 years old is considered a "child", a baby still under his mommy's and daddy's care. Back then on the other hand, people who reached the age of 18 were considered wise and very mature.
Salam
Wael.

I totally agree that our standards are different than 1400 years ago...I've heard people call your prophet a criminal for marrying such a young girl but I disagree. I agree with you that, at the time, it was socially acceptable, therefore not out of the norm.
My question was more along the lines of, "Is marrying such a young child NOW acceptable and condoned throughout the Muslim community?"
