Inshallah this is what youre looking for.

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri said:

“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out to the Musalla on the day of Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr. He passed by the women and said, ‘O women! Give charity, for I have seen that you form the majority of the people of Hell.’ They asked, ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allaah?’ He replied, ‘You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religious commitment than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you.’ The women asked, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, what is deficient in our intelligence and religious commitment?’ He said, ‘Is not the testimony of two women equal to the testimony of one man?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Is it not true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?’ The women said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is the deficiency in her religious commitment.’”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 304)

Assalamu alaikum

An old subject but in focus for me for the moment.

Where can I find an explanation of the circumstances of this hadith? What I would like to 'put into other words' to understand is this part

''I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religious commitment than you. ''

Any ideas brothers and sisters?

as salam alykom

Let me take a stab on this Umm.

First i d start by trying to clarify the word "A`ql" used in the arabic text that is translated here into intelligence.

Actually the word A`ql can be best translated as mind, brain or the like. it is the part of the body with which we understand. The verb is Ya`qel elshaya which means to understand it. Intelligence is a skill we develop using this part "A`ql'. When the Messenger refered to a deficiency of A`qla, at the same hadeeth he explained it as the testimony on which I can elaborate if u want. Thus, in brief, women tend to be more emotional specially at certain times like menses and pregnancy when the level of hormone changes leading to this difference of emotions.

did i help? i m ready to elaborate when u want dearest UmmZ

alright dear UmmZ,

in the translated text, it describes the women as deficient, however, if I d explain it in arabic, it says missing in amount of because the Messenger said Naqesat which means incomplete. i know it may be taken as sysnonym, but this is how i feel it better. Now when we are incomplete in terms of rational, mind or the like, it never means that we are unable to think, but rather as I said we tend to be more emotional specially at certain times.

Now, testimony is actually a major responsibility, therefore, if u look at this, you will find that Allah Is so Merciful and of course Understanding of how He Created women. Who else can understand and realize our status more. Thus, during certain times, like pregnancy and menses, women tend to be emotional, unsure about their decisions, (at certain time I worked with american women who were researching about divorce in Islam, she questioned me about the same thing, I asked her how many times she asked her husband for divorce when she was pregnant, she said if he agreed to my decision, we would have been divorced by now), forgetful as well. Out of Allah's Mercy Who legislates to cover all possibilities and situations, Allah Made our testimony half of the men. Take in consideration that men also receive double of our inheritance.

To conclude:

it involves less responsibility out of Allah's Mercy

It gives us room to support one another

It involves Allah's understanding to our situation at certain times

It never convey's our short or lack of abilities or else the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam would have never refered to his wives for advice in so many situations.
