music and singing ?
#1

ASALAMOALAIKUM,

i found the following fatwa from Dr Ahmad kutty(www.islamicinstitute.ca) .. plz give your views that wot do u think .... JAZAKALLAH

Answer:

Music is an issue that has been hotly debated by scholars of the past and the present. While many of them have been generally inclined to condemn all forms of music—with the singular exception of al-dduff (tambourine) in weddings--, quite a few of them have taken a more positive approach of considering only music containing sensual, pagan, or unethical themes or subliminal messages as being categorically forbidden.

The latter view seems to be more consistent with the general nature of Islam, which is undoubtedly a complete way of life that caters to all of the genuine human instincts and needs within permissible limits. Thus to say that all music is forbidden in Islam does not seem to agree with the balanced approach of Islam to issues of human life and experience.

Traditions often cited by the first group scholars to justify condemnation of all musical instruments and music, according to some scholars, are considered as either spurious, or phrased in such way solely because of their associations with drinking, dancing, and sensuality.

While everyone agrees that all forms of music that contain pagan, sensual themes, or subliminal messages are clearly forbidden, the latter group of scholars considers all forms of music free of such themes and messages as permissible.

As a matter of fact, we know from the authentic traditions that the Prophet, peace be upon him, not only allowed music in the weddings but also listened to girls singing: While listening to girls singing on such an occasion, he interrupted them only once when they sang the following verse, “In our midst is a prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow”; whence, the Prophet, peace be upon him, told them, “Cut this sentence out, and continue singing what you had been singing earlier.”

There is nothing in the sources to indicate that the above permission is limited to the occasion of wedding, as some people tend to think.

In light of these, according to the last mentioned group of scholars, music that is deemed to be free of un-Islamic and unethical themes and messages—the same is true of musical instruments so long as they are not used for the above—have been considered as permissible.

A final word: Islam clearly prohibits mixed dancing of males and females.

Welocme brother to the board, what u said is correct as it was told to us by our azhaete scholar, but still one must not leave The Holy Quran and keep on listening to anasheeds or music more than The Holy book. Music is a trivial matter that we should not bother ourselves much about, Our Umma has much more higher priorities than thinking about music being halal or haram. please do not consider this as an offence brother, but truly we need to awaken and look to what is more important to the rise of our Islamic Umma, by the Will of Allah(SWT) :)

Hi Universist,

Why so irritated? Some things that is important to me may well be of less importance to you and vice versa. Why should that be a problem - for you?

Let's face it, we ARE different and give priority to DIFFERENT things and issues. If we can come to a better understanding, when we come into matters that concerns all of us, that we can respect one another so we can come to a suitable agreement. Without showing such impatience and hostility.

No Uni I have lots of colors, and I look at life from a good angle, not just because u look at it from a non beleiver it means that u have colors, and me a beleiver i have a black look at things. If we differ among us that does not mean we have black ideas, and I still insist on my opinion, from my point of view, our Islamic Umma is going through a very serious attack from everywhere, and U r one of them, so from MY point of view we should know and learn how to deal with such matters, how to make ourselves strong and unite against those who are trying to weaken our faith, and throw doubtful matters in our faces, we alhamdulilah do not doubt in our relegion, we are strong in our faith, and yes we have much more important things to deal with than music. It is enough what is happening in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, and so on. This is what we should be dealing with and learning how to solve our weaknesses and diversities that was implanted in the Islamic body from the western occupation. To me hearing Quran is much more enchanting and self soothing and relaxing than hearing a song or a nasheed, because it is the word of Allah(SWT), and nothing replaces that. I insist on my point of view and opinion even if everyone here differs with me.

Peace

I agree with Jennifer, nothing in our religion is trivial, I think we really need to know our limits so that we dont fall into haram ditches. If i m not sure whether or not music is haram for sure i just might continue listening to it if it is really hard to stop.

Radiyah actually music is the part of lives of many, let me safely say the majority of those living in the west. And for those who are coming to Islam, they really need to know where they stand in each and every point. U might be blessed of stoping to listen to it, but others need to know if they have to.

Asalaamu alikum,

You guys, come on.... Is this really something to be taking sides about? The original post didnt ask what importance we place on music at all, so why we are now taking this diversion I dont understand.

Islam is a whole and complete and perfect religion, we take it as a whole or leave it as a whole.

The original post asked for input about what he posted, that is all. People should feel welcome to post anything they wish to discuss. I guess this is one of the ways we can improve our knowledge.

May Allah guide us all to the right path, Ameen.

Astaghfer Allah sister Jennifer, there is not taking sides insha'Allah. I answered the brother, I put my point of view politely I guess, but Uni just has to put his nose in things, so my answer was for him and not for any of u sister Aotho Billah. So again I repeat it was just my opinion, I might be right I might be wrong, may Allah(SWT) forgive me if I offended any of u brothers and sisters. And I really doooooooo feeeeeel so enchanted and alofted when hearing The Holy Quaran. And I did not say that listening to the nasheeds or non haram music was haram or forbidden did I?? :D

Your sounding extremely paranoid sir and this idea that the worlds fastest growing religion is under some sort of SERIOUS ATTACK is really over the top. Always I see from you the "make yourself stronger", and "unite against the Non-Believers", and the "we have no doubts about our religion" comments. How then is it that the fastest growing religion can be under such heavy duress as you suggest? Whether there is truth in these ideas or not, if you say them loud enough and long enough, someone might actually believe its true.

Taking the position that music is some danger to Islam is really really over the top. It is written that Mohammed himself was known to sing the adhan aloud. And to insist that one song above all is the only song worth listening too, for everyone, is just another form of overbearing control, which it appears is something you seem to also insist on for all of us. Typical overbearing totalatarian control. Which is what the 2/3rds of the non-muslim world fears most about Islam.

And the last time I checked, am I crazy or did I hear the muadhdhin singing aloud the adhan? Imagine how the call to prayer would sound if simply shouted out, and not sung aloud. Not quite the same then is it.

Any color you like as long as its black,

Eh Radiyah?

When you post publically am I allowed to stick my nose in or not?

If not then ban me. Otherwise, expect me to comment.
