Will All Christians Go To Hell?
#21

brothers and sisters

if u also just take a good look at martini's post he put the yes over the ayahs that prove no while the no is over ayahs that prove yes.

Just in case u didnt get the point martini

Those who are Jews, and Christians, and Sabaeans - <b>whoever believeth in Allah and the Last Day and doeth right -</b> surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

The bolded part in this ayah in arabic says man aaman menhum which translates as whoever believes from among them. Which puts a condition that from those categories those who belive will be safe.

Hope u got it now

and u really need to stand with yourself and make a clear position. r u athiest, looking to be chrisitan or what?

Quote: If you do not know Arabic, and as fully as possible TRULY want to understand what Allah, SWT is telling you in the Qur'an, I can recommend you to http://www.tafsir.com/ there you can check out which Surah it is that you have problem with, and you will have a VERY good explanation.

Wassalaam,

Jazzakallah Kheyr sister, I was going to post the same web-site!

Martini, if you have any doubts or issues with the verses then I suggest you take a course in Arabic language, learn the jurispudence and sciences involved to deduce your own tafsir or understanding of the ayats.

PS - we are learning plenty from your posts as you answer the questions yourself... [Image: smile.gif]

Brother, you can sound off all you want. I keep silent many times when I would rather say something but, Alhamdulillah, you usually will say it for me. Agreed on the Bible thing, too.

Bismillah,

Assalamu aleikum,

Thought to fill in some info into this question, I could not find it in the earlier posts. May it be helpful insha'Allah.

Question :

For the time being, I do not have the resources to quote the exact Quranic verse, nor can I tell you what sura it has been taken from. However, I believe it is a common verse. I understand little Arabic; hence I found that in English. The verse can be interpretted as such:

The godfearing Jews, muslims and christians will not have fear (on that day).

I am not exactly sure of the bracketted phrase.

Now my question to you: is it mistranliteration?

We know that christians and jews in general cannot be hoped to have any sanction in the life hereafter. So, how do we understand the verse?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

What you refer to in your question is mentioned in two similar aayaat in the Qur’aan. The first of them is the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [al-Baqarah 2:62]

The second is the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “Surely, those who believe, those who are the Jews and the Sabians and the Christians – whosoever believed in Allaah and the Last Day, and worked righteousness, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [al-Maa’idah 5:69]

In order to understand these aayaat correctly, we need to refer to the scholars of Tafseer (Qur’aanic commentary). The great Imaam Ismaa’eel ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy on him, said in his tafseer of the aayah from Soorat al-Baqarah:

“Allaah, may He be exalted, points out that whoever of the previous nations did well and was obedient, will have a good reward, and this will be the case for everyone who follows the Unlettered Prophet [Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) until the Hour comes – he will have eternal happiness, and they will not fear what they are going to face, nor will they grieve for what they have left behind. As Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘No doubt! Verily, the awliya’ of Allaah [i.e., those who believe in the Oneness of Allaah and fear Allaah much, and love Allaah much], no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve.’ [Yoonus 10:62]. And Allaah tells us what the angels say to the believers at the time of death (interpretation of the meaning): ‘Verily, those who say, “Our Lord is Allaah,” then they istaqaamu [stood straight, i.e., truly followed Islam], on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): “Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!”’ [Fussilat 41:30]

As far as the Jews are concerning, their faith meant believing in the Tawraat (original Torah) and following the way of Moosa (peace be upon him) until ‘Eesa came, after which whoever continued to follow the Torah and the way of Moosa, and did not leave this and follow ‘Eesa, was doomed. As far as the Christians are concerned, their faith meant believing in the Injeel (original Gospel) and following the laws of ‘Eesa; whoever did this was a believer whose faith was acceptable to Allaah, until Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came, after which whoever did not follow Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and leave the way of ‘Eesa and the Injeel that he had been following before, was doomed.

The aayah (interpretation of the meaning), “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:85] is a statement that Allaah will not accept any way or deed from anyone, after sending His Final Messenger, except those that are in accordance with the laws of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Prior to this, however, anyone who followed the Prophet of his own time was on the Straight Path of salvation. So the Jews were those who followed Moosa (peace be upon him) and referred to the Tawraat for judgement at that time. When Allaah sent ‘Eesa (peace be upon him), the Children of Israel were obliged to follow him and obey him, and so they and others who followed him became Christians.. When Allaah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as the Final Prophet and a Messenger to all the children of Adam, all of mankind was obliged to believe in him and obey him, and refrain from what he prohibited. Those who did so are the true believers. The ummah (nation) of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are called the believers because of their deep eemaan (faith) and conviction, and because they believe in all the past Prophets and in the prophesied events that are yet to come.”

Commenting on the aayah in Soorat al-Baqarah, Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“What is meant is that every group believed in Allaah and the Last Day, which is the appointed Day of Reckoning, and did righteous deeds. But after Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was sent to both mankind and the jinn, true belief can only be in accordance with the way of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Whoever follows his way will not fear the future or grieve for what they leave behind.

People like this should probably stop trying to explain or interpret the Bible, because it's all wrong. No one was "doomed" as he says. There were several prophets AFTER Moses. No one stopped following or believing in Moses' writings just because another prophet came after that. That's why the Jews have not only the Torah but the rest of hte prophets' writings as well. Same with Christians.

You don't throw away the Word of God from prophets before.

But to get off the Bible and back to Quran, what is the purpose of this verse? According to Muslim beliefs, there was no "original" (so-called) Torah or Gospel at the time of Muhammad. According to Muslims, they were both lost centuries before. So, Islamically-speaking, it was impossible that anyone was a "true" Jew or Christian at the time of Muhammad.

So was this verse supposed to help Muslims understand what happened to the so-called "original" Christians and Jews who lived centuries and centuries before??

Admittedly confused here.... [Image: blink.gif]

Bismillah,

I don't think this scholar is trying to interpret the Bible, he is telling us about what the QUR'AN says. To be doomed mean to NOT follow the Prophets, peace be upon them, and Allah's, SWT will.

Maybe you see it if you read it again, continue, not leave... As long as following the original teachings of the earlier Prophets, peace be upon them, these earlier generations were not doomed. They shall not fear nor grieve.

<i>''No one stopped following or believing in Moses' writings just because another prophet came after that. That's why the Jews have not only the Torah but the rest of hte prophets' writings as well. Same with Christians.''</i>

That is not what is said here either. Muslims are well aware of that Jews follow the Torah. But you mention the other Prophets writings. Allah, SWT does not tell us of any other 'writings' that has resulted in Books than Torah, Zabur, Injeel and the Qur'an. But as you know Islam acknowledges and honour ALL the Prophets, peace be upon them, that has ever been sent by Allah, SWT. And that they did teach their nations whatever Allah, SWT revealed to them. Since humans have existed a long time, the needs and laws may differ.

But anyway they had some in common - to convey the Message of Allah, SWT in the clearest way, calling people to worship Allah, SWT alone, to give glad tidings and warning, to purify souls, to set aright deviated thoughts and false beliefs (like for ex Noah and Abraham, peace be upon them, condemned people for worship of idols, Hood, pbuh, condemned his people for their arrogance and tyranny, Salih, pbuh, condemned his people for corruption, Lot, pbuh, struggled against sodomy that spread among his people, Shu'aib, pbuh, against the crime of short in measure and weight).

<i>''You don't throw away the Word of God from prophets before.''</i>

Neither Islam teaches this.

<i>''According to Muslim beliefs, there was no "original" (so-called) Torah or Gospel at the time of Muhammad. ''</i>

Yes that is what Allah, SWT teaches. So it is correct that it is the 'Muslim belief'.

<i>''According to Muslims, they were both lost centuries before.''</i>

According to Allah, SWT something has happened to His earlier Revelations. But when and how this happened we do not know. But for a Muslim it is sufficient to know it DID happen. This info is enough.

<i>''So was this verse supposed to help Muslims understand what happened to the so-called "original" Christians and Jews who lived centuries and centuries before??''</i>

As I wrote just before, yes it is important to understand that something has happened, and Allah, SWT does clarify that for us. But I don't think that is the main purpose of the ayah, it is about who the true believers are, and that they will be rewarded by Allah, SWT. That they shall not fear nor grieve.

Confusing? Not to me. Hope it clarifies for you too.

Some things are a little clearer, umm_Zachariah, just one last thing:

Quote:But I don't think that is the main purpose of the ayah, it is about who the true believers are
.
If the purpose of this ayah was not to talk about Christians and Jews of earlier times, then who is it about? Because no such "true believer" (i.e., Christian or Jew) could possibly have existed at Muhammad's time since the original revelations were gone. Soooo.... do you understand my confusion on this?

I mean, basically, since about 20 years after Jesus, it was impossible for there to be a real Christian anymore considering that Islam believes that the REAL Gospel and truth about Jesus was lost so early on.

So, who is this verse referring to?

Bismillah,

You wonder about the main purpose of the ayah. Let me repeat these two again,

“Verily, those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.”
[al-Baqarah 2:62]

“Surely, those who believe, those who are the Jews and the Sabians and the Christians – whosoever believed in Allaah and the Last Day, and worked righteousness, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.”
[al-Maa’idah 5:69]

So true believers go a long way back, all the way back to the first human being and Prophet, Adam, pbuh. So Allah, SWT, here is telling us about ALL true believers that have ever existed, until the Last Hour comes.

One has to be a bit careful, since if one do not try to understand WHO these people are, one may be confused. Maybe you read the word Christian, and then you see a 'green light' - according to the Qur'an you will be saved. Therefore it is so IMPORTANT to take the fundamental message of the Qur'an in.

Islam teaches that you have to be a true believer in Allah, SWT and and all His Prophet's, peace be upon them, including the Last Prophet, saws, to be able to enter Paradise. That is what Allah, SWT 'requires' of us one could say. So when Islam entered into the world IT is the way to obey and follow Him, until the Last Hour, since Islam teaches the Qur'an is the Last Message from our Creator, and Muhammad, saws is the last Prophet, saws.

So the followers of Musa, pbuh, for example, that did not have Muhammad, saws to follow, for obvious reasons, but did fulfill all the other criteria that Allah, SWT did set up for them, should be included in the true believers.

Are you following the thought?

with all due respect to such a distinguished scholar but the ayah as interpreted by him leaves out Jews and christians who revert back to Islam in our modern time. And since Quran is a book that covers with its contents all times.

Then I think the Ayah as explained before is simply stating that whoever believes in Allah and the Day After as brought in Islam shall be safe.

Simply because the Ayahs' even included the Sebians and Sebians are those who followed Nuh and then apostated.

So to just make it simple, if any of the mentioned categories came back to Islam, or was a follower of the true religion brough by their respective Prophets shall be safe.
