Egypt prepares for 75-year-old Palestinian leader's funeral

Nov. 11: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat died early Thursday at a Paris military hospital. NBC's Brian Williams reports on the reaction from Ramallah.

Updated: 1:12 p.m. ET Nov. 11, 2004CAIRO - Egypt put its security forces on maximum alert Thursday and prepared a modest mosque at Cairo’s international airport for the funeral of Yasser Arafat, the guerrilla leader turned Nobel Peace Prize winner who died earlier in the day at a French military hospital outside Paris at the age of 75.

A French military helicopter took his flag-draped casket to a nearby military airfield, where crowds of supporters gathered outside, waving flags and pictures of Arafat.

In a brief ceremony attended by French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and Foreign Minister Michel Barnier, Arafat’s widow, Suha, wept with her head bowed as eight soldiers walked down the airfield tarmac bearing the coffin, draped in a large Palestinian flag. She then followed her husband’s coffin onto a waiting French jet, which departed minutes later for Cairo, where Arafat's funeral on Friday was to be attended by leaders from around the world.

After the service, Arafat’s body will be flown to his Ramallah compound in the West Bank for burial.

The death of the man both revered as a champion of Palestinian statehood and reviled as a terrorist spread spasms of grief among Palestinians and rekindled calls for new peace talks with Israel.

It also left the Palestinians without a strong leader for the first time in four decades and aroused fears of a chaotic power struggle that could lead to fighting in the streets.

Arafat died at 3:30 a.m. local time at the Percy Military Training Hospital in Clamart.

‘His big heart stopped’

“He closed his eyes and his big heart stopped. He left for God but he is still among this great people,” said senior Arafat aide Tayeb Abdel Rahim, who broke into tears as he announced Arafat’s death.

A wave of grief quickly swept across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Thousands ran into the streets, clutching his photograph, crying and wondering how they would survive without the man who embodied their struggle for statehood.

“He is our father,” Namia Abu-Safia, 48, said sobbing in the Jebaliya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. “He is Palestine.”

Black smoke from burning tires rose across the Gaza Strip and gunmen fired into the air in grief. Palestinian flags at Arafat’s battered compound here were lowered to half-staff. Somber music played on the radio, church bells rang out and Quranic verses were played for hours over mosque loudspeakers.

As Palestinians mourned, many Israelis heaped bitterness on the man they branded a “master terrorist,” blaming him for the 4-year-old “intifada,” or uprising, and for attacks that have killed hundreds of their people.

President Bush and some other world leaders expressed the hope that Arafat’s death will clear the way for successful Mideast peace negotiations with new Palestinian leaders.

But the impediments to peace were quickly visible.

Within hours of Arafat’s death, militants from his Fatah movement attacked a Jewish settlement in Gaza in what they said signaled the start of a new round of clashes with Israel. Soldiers killed three Palestinians, at least two of them gunmen.

History will judge him as history never lies...

This is what the youth think of Arafat who live in Palestine...

"If Arafat dies I am afraid that the Jews will take out our people and we will be without a state," said 11-year-old Khalil Abu Ein.

On Wednesday, while Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat lay on his deathbed in Paris, Abu Ein sat on the stairway outside his class in a Ramallah middle school telling a reporter his views of his president and the future of his people and their state.

Palestinian children interviewed in Ein Masbach public elementary school in Ramallah agreed that Arafat was their rais (leader), but they differed regarding the success of his leadership and what the future will look like without him.

Tarek Adnan wished his leader death. The 12-year old with the highest grades in the class, a thin t-shirt far too large for his small frame, dirty pants, and cheap plastic shoes, considers Arafat a traitor. "I will be happy if he dies because he gave Hamas members to the Jews. I consider him a traitor. I hate him. Nobody loves him."

"He kills and he imprisons innocent people and the guilty go free."

Adnan does not support any of the leaders presently in the PA. "They are all traitors. I want Hamas. Without Hamas we would lose all our people. They are the ones that do operations. If the [israeli] army gets into the city they are the ones that protect the people."

"We need someone from Hamas but he has to rule with righteousness – to defend the people," said Adnan who hopes to be an electrical engineer and a member of Hamas when he grows up. "I want to think of a plan to free Palestine."

Jubilant are they [the martyrs] because of the grace Allah bestowed upon them, rejoicing in the glad tidings given to those who were left behind and have not yet joined them, that they need have no fear, neither shall they grieve.

He died as martyr In Ramadan, There is no greater honour then to die in ramadan! May Allah pardon his bad deeds, and rest his soul in peace. I would not be surprised if they have poisened him. [Image: sad.gif]

May Allah humiliate the the ones that work on how to Humiliate the muslimeen. May Allah subhanaAllah wa'ta'La destroy all of those who work on how to destroy the Muslimeen. May Allah weaken the strength of the ones, who work on how to weaken the strength of the muslimeen. May Allah Demolish the Honour of the ones who want to disgrace the honour of the muslimeen.

We are not to say this, that he is a martyr sister, please forgive me all, but we must not assume that he is a shaheed, only Allah Subhanahu Wa T'ala has the right to Decide this, we will ask Allah The Merciful to forgive him as he died in this Holy month, and only Allah The Great The Al-Knower, Knows what is in the hearts of His slaves. And about poison I dont think they would do such a thing, he was already very sick, Wallahu 'alam.

may Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala have mercy on his soul and forgive his sins.

Assalamu aleikum,

Dear sister Radiyah,

I do agree that we all do submit to the knowledge that it is only Allah, SWT that knows our 'destiny'. He is the only one that knows WERE we will end up when our time comes, insha'Allah we have to work hard to stay on the Sirat al-Mustaqim before it is too late.

My AMEEN was to the Dua' that sister Instuition wrote

''May Allah humiliate the the ones that work on how to Humiliate the muslimeen. May Allah subhanaAllah wa'ta'La destroy all of those who work on how to destroy the Muslimeen. May Allah weaken the strength of the ones, who work on how to weaken the strength of the muslimeen. May Allah Demolish the Honour of the ones who want to disgrace the honour of the muslimeen.''

It is a 'tough' Dua' but the surrounding world also is very tough towards us. 'Striking back' with prayer is a very strong weapon insha'Allah.

Asalamalaykum Radiyah

I never said he was poisened I said I would not be surprised if they had poisened him and Allah knows best. Of course you can feel differently about that.

in a report by an-Nasa’i, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever fights to protect his rights and dies in the process is a martyr.”

Wasn't Yaser arafat always defending his rights and the rights of his people, to the best of his ability til he became too weak and eventually death followed?

Unlike some so-called muslim leaders we have nowadays.

Surely Only Allah knows whos a martyr or not, but the prophet described their qualities too, and at the end of the day only Allah knows whats in their breasts.
