The Major Sins
#1

The major sins are those acts which have been forbidden by Allah in the Quran and by His Messenger (p.b.u.h.) in the Sunnah (practice of the Prophet), and which have been made clear by the actions of of the first righteous generation of Muslims, the Companions of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.).

Allah Most High says in His Glorious Book:

"If you avoid the major (part) of what you have been forbidden (to do), We will cancel out for you your (other) evil deeds and will admit you (to Paradise) with a noble entry." (al-Nisa 4:31)

Thus, by this verse, Allah Most High has guaranteed the Garden of Paradise to those who avoid the major sins. And Allah Most High also says:

"Those who avoid the greatest of sins and indecencies, and forgive when they are angry." (al-Shura 42:37) "Those who avoid the greatest sins and indecencies, except for oversights, (will find that) surely your Lord is ample in forgiveness." (Al-Najm 53:32)

The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h.) said: "The five (daily) prayers, Friday to Friday, and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided." It is therefore very important to determine exactly what the greatest vices, technically called "the major sins" (Kaba'ir), are, in order that Muslims should avoid them.

There is some difference of opinion among scholars in this regard. Some say these major sins are seven, and in support of their position they quote the tradition: "Avoid the seven noxious things"- and after having said this, the prophet (p.b.u.h.) mentioned them: "Associating anything with Allah, magic, killing one whom Allah has declared inviolate without a just case, consuming the property of an orphan, devouring usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers but indiscreet." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Abdullah Ibn Abbas said: "Seventy is closer to their number than seven." and indeed that is correct. The above tradition does not limit the major sins to those mentioned in it. Rather, it points to the type of sins which fall into the category of "major." These include those crimes which call for a prescribed punishment (HADD; plural, HUDUD), such as theft, fornication or adultery (ZINA), and murder; those prohibited acts for which a warning of a severe punishment in the next world is given in the Quran or the tradition; and also those deeds which are cursed by our Prophet (p.b.u.h.). These are all major sins.

Of course, there is a gradation among them, since some are more serious than others. We see that the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) has included SHIRK (associating someone or something with Allah) among them, and from the text of the Quran we know that a person who commits SHIRK will not his sin be forgiven and will remain in Hell forever.

Allah Most High says:

i enjoyed the contribution you have made. basically, i think that if we as muslims try our utmost best to follow the teachings set out in the glorious qur'aan, there might not be anything such as 'major sins'.but shaitaan is very hardworking and will try in every possible way to deter us from doing the right thing and until we apply ourselves to refrian from these sinful acts then insha allaah we will be able to make progress as a muslim community.jazakallaah for your enlightenment on this issue...it helps alot...

So you can't murder someone but you can kill someone in a war?

Who has to declare the war to make killing someone ok?

Is just the fact that Jihad has been declared by a religous leader somewhere enough of a reason to kill someone else? Or does it have to be an official declaration of "war"?

I'm interested to know the rules for taking someone else's life.

Thanks.

If that list was taken from jannah.org, and making pictures is a sin, why isnt that website text-only?

It includes many pictures, pictures which someone - most likely the webdesigner - had to make.

Isn't that a bit hippocritical?

Also...web design involves creating pictures...which apparently is a sin. Therefore, one could derive that web design is a sin. So by using forum software, and supporting web design, does that mean IslamMessage.com supports sinning?

The above is just hypothetical....but the context in which these "sins" exist needs to be more clearly defined.

Hi Joshua,

There are pictures and there are pictures. The pictures that is of human beings or animals, is the ones that it is referred to. To have pictures of landscapes, trees, flowers, things that people have made houses, cars and so on, are allowed. One has to distinguish between pictures that contains living creatures that has a soul and others.

One cannot blame anyone else for one owns sin. IF I have commited a sin by quoting something from somewhere, that is not a proper place to read or quote from, then the sin is MINE, it is not the forums sin. I will be held accountable for that. And IF the site is inproper in the sight of Allah, SWT, then the people responsible for that site will be accountable for THEIR sin.

So I don't know where your wording 'hippocritical' suits in here?

Assalamu aleikum,

Yes sister I too have heard of the 7 most grave sins, they are also mentioned in this topic in the beginning of this thread. And that it can be found in Bukhari and Muslim.

I found this - from Muslim, Book 001, Number 0161:

''It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: Avoid the seven noxious things. It was said (by the hearers): What are they, Messenger of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Associating anything with Allah, magic, killing of one whom God has declared inviolate without a just cause, consuming the property of an orphan, and consuming of usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers, but unwary.''

And the absolute worst of them is commiting Shirk, associating anything with Allah, SWT.

Exactly so adding to them I think is not recommended specially calling something major sin when it could be just a sin.

May Allah Allow us to avoid all kinds of sin
