Salaam Alaikum 8)
If you don't mind me chiming in here..... this certainly isn't the first time I've ran across this discussion. I definately not an expert in this area, but I think I'm not so wet behind the ears, either.
The sword has been used in the history of Islam, but it certainly was NOT used for conversions. This is where things get twisted up. Muslims defended themselves, and at the point of possible death, only out of MERCY were they offered a chance to continue thier life.
Here is something that I've read just today on another forum:
<b>they were in a war against the Kafir and Ali was fighting this man, who was not as strong as him, so quite quickly he had the man in a position where he could kill him. Ali said to the man 'declare that there is no God but Allah and that Muhumad (pbuh) is is prophet and i will spare your life' and the man said 'never' - so Ali made his move to kill the man and the man spat in his face. as soon as he spat in his face Ali (may allah be pleased with him) stepped back and told the man 'get out of here, i cant kill you now' - the man said 'you could have killed me easily, why didnt you?' - and Ali said 'i was gonna kill you for the sake of Allah and his religion, but when you spat in my face it made me angry - if i had killed you, it may have been to satisfy my own anger instead for the sake of islam, and that would put me in the fire'</b>
on hearing this, the man became muslim.
You see? Now here we have a perfect example of fighting and conversion at the same time.... now, can you pinpoint how things like can get twisted down the road?
Salaam.
