Why are we always threatened?

I thought the whole theory behind democracy was the people really did control what the government did. The system is set up so that people can change it. The problem is that it requires effort. Most of us are content to watch who the latest celebrities are dating and which team won which games. This nation is asleep. Yet is that an excuse for not knowing what is happening in the world and even in our own country?

By this reasoning, the citizens of Nazi Germany played no part in the murdering of millions of people, jews, gypsies, catholics, and other prisoners. Most of them did not know what truly happened in the concentration camps. So are they completely absolved of these attrocities? I believe not. They are the ones who put such a government into power. By doing so, they are shouldering some of the responcibiltiy of what that government does.

I do not believe that self-inflicted ignorance is an excuse for anything, not when the alternative is so readily available.
