Here is a hadith that should clarify this matter in sha Allah. Please read the entire post. Jazak Allah Kharin.
Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas said that asheep was given in Sadaqah to the freed-slave of Hazrat Maymunah. The Messenger of Allah came that way and said, "Why did you not take off its skin and tan it and derive some good out of it?" The Companions said,"It is a dead animal"(meaning to say that it was not slaughtered in the proper way). He said, "It is only the eating of it that is disallowed."(Bukhari, Muslim)
When an animal that is lawful, is sacrificed in accordance with Shari'ah, it's skin meat and fat are pure. However, if the skin has blood stains or drops of urine, then it must washed before use. It is not necessary to tan such hide or skin. If an animal dies a natural death or an accidental death or was killed by shooting or beating, it's skin, flesh and fat are impure. However, its skin is purified by tanning but its flesh and fat can not be purified.
Rulings:
1) The skin of even those animals that are unlawful to eat may be purified by tanning. These are lion, wolf, jakal, monkey, etc.
2)If these animals are slaughtered by a Muslim after reciting Bismillah, Allahu Akbar, their skin becomes pure. It is not necessary to dry or apply any chemical in order to purify it. However when the flesh is forbidden it is not lawful even after slaughtering it in a Shari'ah manner. Only its skin becomes pure.
3)Everything of swine is impure. Its hair, bone, meat, etc is impure. Its skin cannot be purified even by tanning.
