Salaamu Alaykum,
yeah sister I can see how you feel about that happening in your house and although this is not the best practice. My family would not do khatmal Qur'aan but we have been invited to a couple for people getting a new house or getting a new business and they have these gatherings for people to come and read Qur'aan and then pray for the bussiness or house. If you study Islaamic studies and shareeah( a family member of mine did), there is some evidence that this is okay, to do khatmal Qur'aan because if you read Qur'aan in your dua's, it has a more chance of being accepted and in Sayyid Sabiq's book fiqhussunnah it is okay.
I dont personally do it, I have gone to gatherings and maybe read some Qur'aan but wiht the intention for myself and I just make dua' for the host's business, house, and even their loved one's who passed away. The stronger opinion(according to minhaaj followers) is that the Qur'aan reading is really for you and does not benefit the dead, so you can read it for yourself or you can read it in your dua' so your dua' is accepted.
Sister Amma, please dont fight your family over this issue, they are simply following another opinion, even if it is not that strong and you think you are right. Don't be rigid as long as they are not doing outright shirk or kufr. There are so many religious people I have come across that are rigid in some things and strict but are the most racist Muslims I have seen. So you have to keep things in prespective and not look down upon others because of their understanding and always consider the possiblity that maybe you could be wrong or both could be right.
Hope this helps.
