Hadeeth about Jaahileeyah
#1

as-Salaamu 3alaykum,

The Prophet said, Sallallaahu 3alayhi wa Sallam:

"Whoever prides himself in the affiliations of Jaahileeyah, let him bite his fathers private part and do not speak to him."

Other authentic wordings state, "Whoever you hear (or see) priding himself in the affiliations of Jaahileeyah, then order him to bite his fathers private part and do not speak to him."

Jaahileeyah primarily refers to the era of widespread ignorance prior to the Message of Islaam that Prophet Muhammad came with, Sallallaahu 3alayhi wa Sallam, although it applies to later aspects of ignorance and opposition to the Sharee3ah. Usually the scholars say that affiliations of Jaahileeyah refers to tribalism, racism, nationalism, etc.

Anyway, the Takhreej of the Hadeeth (from Sh. al-Albaanee's Silsilah as-Saheehah): al-Bukhaaree in al-Adab al-Mufrad, an-Nasaa'ee in as-Siyar and as-Sunan al-Kubraa, Ahmad in al-Musnad, and others. The companion who reports it is 'Ubayy bin Ka3b.

al-Albaanee declared it Saheeh in as-Silsilah as-Saheeh #269, Saheeh al-Jaami3, Hadeeth #567 and #619.

Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi3ee declared it Hasan in as-Saheeh al-Musnad Min Maa Laysa Fis-Saheehayn, Hadeeth #10 and #11.

There are some authentic narrations where a subnarrator hears 'Ubayy say this to someone who was taking pride in Jaahileeyah, so the person say "'Ubayy, you were never a person who spoke with bad language." So he responded "I heard the Prophet say...the Hadeeth." and in another narration "We were ordered to do such."

And Ibnu Abee Shaybah reports that 'Umar, the righteous Khaleefah, said "Whoever takes pride in his tribe, then order him to bite or suck his father's private part." This is mentioned in al-Jaami3 al-Kabeer.

Note: There is a difference between affiliation with a tribe, like saying I am from such and such tribe, or saying I am Ghaamidee (example), versus saying I am the best, because I am a Ghaamidee, and the Ghaamidees are the best. The first (simple affiliation) is fine, and was the practice of the Salaf (to say, for example, Aboo Moosaa AL-ASH'AREE, which means from the tribe of the 'Ash'arees). The second is the taking pride in Jaahileeyah.
