It's probably a ploy by the U.S military, I wouldn't be surprised if these guards were advised to convert by the government so that they could have actual non-muslims instead of true muslims watching over the detainees, you know, paint a picture of the sympathetic non-muslim who converts and is then classified as a muslim when in fact the conversion is just for the sake of making it look a little better for the outside world.
Even if the BBC were to report this, I'd still put it down as a ploy by the military.
