As Salam alaikum
"the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said: "There will be among my ummah people who will regard adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments as permissible. " (Bukhaari)
I am sorry but the only controversy for me surrounding music is that muslims consider it permissible. It is one thinig to indulge in a sin that one feels repentance for. It is another issue to make the haram into halal (follwoing the ways of the jews). There are ahadith against it and logically it weakens one's iman. When music is listened to in leiu of the Speech of Allah, how can this be but detrimental to a muslim. Who at the time of death would prefer music in their head or Qur'an? If the answer is Qu'ran, then we must live like this in order to achieve that goal. If music was beneficial for our deen, then would not the Prophet sal Allahu alaihi wa salam instituted this practice? Were there not singers at his time that he could have commissioned in vast numbers to sing the praises of Allah, (following the ways of the christians)? We know what he came with and we should stick to that if we want to achieve success without doubt.
I pray that we may all stay away from music and strengthen our iman through the remembrance of Allah, myself most of all.
As Salam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu
