Yes, this is quite a common pratice here in Egypt, more than one charity conducts this activity.
Actullay, marriage financial burdens are incrementing to an unaffordable level for the vast majority of Egyptians. May Allah Makes it easy for all of them ameen.

200 couples is usual. There're also old couples - above 50 years old.
But couples who joined mass wedding usually just to get "official papers" from the government.
Actually they've married according to Islamic rules. Some of them don't have official papers.
They who joined mass wedding come from lower class.
Cost for a walimatul ursy here depends on the couple and family. Want to hold a big party or just a simple one.
The mahar (what is in english?) is not always expensive, in average USD 100. Some of my friends even was given lower.
