Quote:Bismillah:

Alhamdulelah = Praise be to Allah.

Bismillah = In the Name of Allah.

Salam = Peace. which is the root word for Islam which means submission to the will of Almighty God.

Salam

Wael.

Sorry Wael, just to correct this common mistake here:

The word Islam in arabic is another verb form of Tasleem, yosalem which all mean to deliver, give or submit.

So to clearly explain what Islam is it is an exaggerating form of the verb to deliver, sumbit or give in.

In other words the word Islam is the act of Islam which is the act of to submit or surrender to Allah.

To sumbit yourself and surrrender yourself to Allah and thus to what Allah Commands or ordains. To stricly follow Allah's commands.

As for the meaning of salam, it means peace. In Quran, we are commanded to use the form of greeting as AS salam Alykom.

We are even commanded to greet non Muslims as Salamu a`la man itab`lhoda.

Which translates as peace to those who followed guidance.

This makes the answer to your question regarding the meaning of salam: peace and form of greeting.

Assalam is also one of Allah's Attributes.

Hope this covered your points.
