I thought it was Haram. But on reflection I can't support the claim.

Asalaamu alikum everyone,
I wanted to add something, (I am an ex-smoker as well) what I am going to tell is based on an audio lecture by Sheik Bilal Philips.
He claimed in the speech that centuries ago it was not considered haram because people did not know it was hazardous to your health. It was rules then as something lesser for the reason that it caused bad breath as was disliked by Allah swt.
However, he says, in the last century, as it was discovered that smoking also is the leading cause of cancer, and other related disease, leading to death, it is now considered to be haram. He went on to say that a smoking person knows that this habit can eventually lead to his deathm which is therefore like suicide, and suicide is forbidden in Islam. Therefore, he says, the scolars have now changed there ruling form the previous thing to a staus of being haram. Which sounds incredibly logical to me.
Allahu Alam.
And for Br. Suhail: Quit, you will feel much better, I promise you.
