Bismillah
May Allah(SWT) guide you Gill, to what He loves and Pleases, and Gill please my advice to you if you read The Quran, put in your mind that what you a re reading is only a translation of The Quran that conveyes the meaning of it in arabic, but sometimes u may understand a verse in another way that it is supposed to be, so please if you have any questions regarding unclear things in The Holy Quran, do not hesitate to ask, we will try and answer.
Now to answer your first Question, when islam first was revealed it was clear to everyone, and the sahaba followed the Prophet(PBUH) in all his deeds and orders that was revealed to him from Allah(SWT), and that is what is called Sunnah, to follow the Prophet(PBUH) path. Now the shi'its, in many ways do not follow the Prophet's path, even some sects of them if not all, u will find that they almost worship Ali, Prophet Muhammad's cousin and his Daughter's husband, by saying that within his hands is the heaven and earth, and that he is the saviour, and they give too much importance to him than to Prophet Muhammad, and there are many stories that just are not logical. to know more about shi'ism read the below link, and it is up to u to decide :

And Gill, as our advice to everyone, do not hasten yourself, read and learn slowly, and you must know that even we as muslims do not have answers to everything, we are still learning and we will keep on learning, and as muslims and as Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) taught us, that the moment we say I know everything, I learnt everything, I am the best at knowledge, then he is the most ignorant person. May Allah(SWT) help you and guide you to the right path. Ameen
As to your second question, of course no it will not be strange, in Islam there is no difference between black or white, yellow or brown all are the same in The Eyes of Allah(SWT), we do not have racial discremination, as Allah(SWT) said in His Holy Book:
Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem:
O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allâh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2). Verily, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Al-Hujurat 49:13)
So as you see no it is not strange, we are all brothers and sisters in humanity, no matter what is our color or nationality.
Best of wishes :)
Peace
