His name means the servant of Allah, or slave of Allah.
However, let me explain this, at the time of Jaheliaya (era of ignorane), Arabs in this part of the world worshiped the idols besides Allah. They were aware that there is a God some kind of God who Created them as well as the univers, who Masters everything.
They thought that they would worship those idols to bring them closer to Allah as the Quran explains:
"Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliyaa' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah." Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever." (Quran 39:3)
So they fell into the trap of shyatan of taking associates and partners with Allah. shaytan decorates this to them saying u just worship them to bring u closer to Allah. The same trap is still applied in many forms.
To conclude, the people of Mohamed salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam were not into monotheism, yet were aware of Allah.
Another example, is his grandfather's name which was Abdul Motaleb. See when u put the adjective abd that transaltes as slave the next name must be one of Allah's Names and Attributes like AbdurRahman or AbdurRaheem and so on.
