The contributions of Islamic society in the fields of advanced mathematics, the sciences, architecture, and language -- just to name a few -- has been and is largely overlooked throughout the Western educational establishment.
Moreover, when western Europe emerged from its Dark Age, it did so in large part due to the recovery of "lost knowledge" from the ancients which had been faithfully preserved and expanded upon by Muslim scholars in Asia Minor and southwest Asia for more than a millenium. Columbus' journey to the western hemiphere, for example, would never have been possible without the advanced state of navigation developed by the Muslim Arabs, and yet this achievement is today hailed as a western European accomplishment.
