i have to say that, no... muslims are not taught to hate non-muslims. Even Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) uncle was non-muslim. yet he loves him very dearly. When his uncle asked the Prophet (PBUH) to submit to the Quraisy, Prophet Mohammed ACTUALLY CRIED. & told his uncle why he won't desert Allah. & It softens his uncle's heart & he actually became to protect Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from the Quraisy. Still sadly, his uncle died, without embracing Islam. The Prophet was very sad, but it's not up to the Prophet to force it on him, or any disbeliever.
The Prophet spread the guidance to the ones who want to believe. also, during Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) leadership in Medina, the various ppl live peacefully together & free to practice their religion under the Covenant of Medina.
so i don't know from where non-muslims think muslims hate them... maybe propaganda, their leaders, the war on terror prejudices... but really, muslims don't think to hate others.
here in my neighbourhood, i also have a Christian, Hindu & Buddhist neighbours just next to my house. growing up, i play Thundercats & Barbie Dolls with my Hindu neighbour, Gayathri, her family even sing their holy scriptures & we can hear them -- & we're fine. my neighbour at the back of my house invited us to their Christmas open-house, back at school -- i had sit next to a Chinese non-muslim girl, Kit Meng. we're all ok with each other. my Chinese neighbour even pray to his deity in front of the house... we can see them & all... when i was 12, my non-muslim teacher even gave me RM10 for no reason but i'm her student! i still remember it, it's such a nice gesture...
it's all ok, coz there's respect & sensitivities among all. i wish ppl the world would not hate muslims, coz i & ppl i know surely don't hate them.
