Can I take a step backwards? It seems you got many good references from my sisters and brothers to look into, so I will not add any for now. I just hope you will take them as good sites to look into. To find sense in your search.
So if I may return with that step to your first question - Why convert?
Because in Islam you will find the 5 basic pillars to live by and practice that makes sense to your life. And these are only the beginning of the journey of life.
Allah, SWT is ONE UNITY in Islam, not difficult to understand. One to pray to and worship. It makes sense to pray and worship Only One God. If you are a monotheist.
To acknowledge ALL His prophets, and not exlude none of them. That makes sense since they were all sent from Him to forward His Message to different nations on this earth. To turn one down is to turn all of them down. Islam does not turn the back to any of them.
To be given knowledge of HOW and WHEN and in WHAT WAY to pray, makes sense. It makes you take RESPONSIBILITY.
To pay the charity tax every year that helps people in need to receive some help from their fellow human beings, that makes a lot of sense. That also means you take RESPONSIBILITY.
To fast during Ramadaan is due to the wish of Allah, SWT. All the previous prophet's have also forwarded the obligation to fast, but Islam made it more easier, since it is allowed to drink, eat and have intimate moments with your husband/wife after the sun has gone to sleep for the night and before it arises again the next morning. Guidelines makes sense.
To go on Pilgrimage once in a lifetime, to gather with all other believers from all over the world to join in a manifest to His honour. And to remeber the MERCY that He has bestowed on us, His creations. To fulfill this makes a lot of sense.
So therefore we Muslims feel chosen and called for since He inspires our hearts to use our common sense and then it is easy to understanding His Message to us with logic. We follow His Will with an easy heart and mind and soul. He leads us through this life in the best possible way.
